Good deals for the Blues. They needed some vets, and if they stay healthy, they could be back in the playoffs.

The West is going to be a lot of fun next year. It's a clusterfuck once you get past LA, Vancouver, Detroit and San Jose. Pretty much everyone has improved, except for Calgary.

Correct, by about $1.8m. Speculation is that Wideman's gone to fit Alzner's yet-to-be-signed RFA deal under the cap.

Would they take Boychuk or Ference for him, I wonder?

Corvo, Wideman, and Kampfer on the same blue line would lead to jumpers from the balcony. I'm pretty satisfied with the d-corps going into this year.

To be fair, Ference was actually one of the Bruins better d-men in the playoffs, and after this offseason his contract doesn't seem that bad at all. Boychuk on the other hand was a train wreck in the playoffs for the most part.

I wouykld have taken Wideman over Corvo had they both been available on Sunday for a 4th. No doubt about it to me.

But now with Corvo in place here, I just don't see a need for Wideman. I certainly wouldn't trade Ference for him, and doubt I would deal Boychuck, as it would suddenly make our defense too small

The knock I always heard about the Ference extension was that it was too long a deal for a guy who couldn't seem to stay healthy. There is no doubt he was the third best blueliner during this teams cup run. It was his trap breaking rush in game 7 against Tampa that lead to Horton's goal.

This. Mr. Ference is actually a great value at 2.25M/year when healthy. Boychuk was not good and I still have trouble understanding how the B's got away with a third defensive pairing of McQ and Kabs. While the 1st line did play half the game, the nature boy was the only other consistently positive blue line contributor. Whether his body and skills can hold up as he hits his mid 30s remains to be seen, but this guy is pretty much untradeable to me, unless it results in a better defenseman coming back.

I'd still trade Ference for Wideman. Ference played in ~90% of the Bruins games this year, including all playoff games. But in the previous 3 years, he played 66 games, 50, and 64 (including playoffs)- and was playing hurt (and ineffective) for a good number of the games he did play. I just don't think one healthy year (when he still did miss a dozen games) means he is no longer injury prone.

North Dakota forward Jason Gregoire has left school to sign with his hometown Jets

A Winnipeg native, Gregoire elected to forgo his final year of collegiate eligibility in May to pursue his professional career.

Gregoire finished his collegiate career with 109 points (57 goals, 52 assists) in 120 career games and his 15 career game-winning goals tie him for fourth all-time at UND with Brandon Bochenski.

Originally a third-round draft pick of the New York Islanders in 2007, Gregoire became an unrestricted free agent this summer after utilizing a clause in the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement that allows college players to become free agents four years after they were drafted if they are not signed by that team.

Pardon the lack of links, just some contract numbers:

Rangers re-sign D Mike Sauer to a 2 year deal worth $1.25m per year.

Preds re-sign forwards Nick Spaling (2 years, $1.05m AAV) and Matt Halischuk (2 years, $713,000 AAV).

Lightning sign RW Ryan Shannon to a 1 year, $625,000 deal.

Flyers re-signed RW Wayne Simmonds to a 2 year, $1.75m AAV contract.

And lastly, the Sens signed RW Mark Parrish of Parrish/Kvasha for Luongo/Jokinen fame to a 1 year, 2-way deal.

Still can't quite fit Alzner under the cap unless they start the year with Johansson, Beagle, and Carlson in the AHL for a game. Looks like McPhee may be playing a risky game here.

Stamkos gets $8 mil per each of the first 4 years, then it drops to $5.5 in the final year. I don't quite get that. Lowers the cap hit, obviously, but it seems odd that he takes a pay cut at the end of the deal, not in year 1 or 2. It's not like he's signing a career contract here. What am I missing?

Maybe his agent isn't a big believer in the US dollar?

Plus, say he doesn't want to re-sign, and they end up trading him before or during his final year. The first $32m of that deal would have been earned in individual-income-tax-free Florida.

Yet another reason that Florida is totally wack.
