I figured I would start this thread with the last post I made in last seasons thread. Since I made so me predictions about EFC 2011-2012 and this is the summer transfer window.

Tough start to the year, but the Toffees finished strong and were able to finish a respectable 7th in the Premier League with 54 points. Beating Chelsea on the final day was pretty nice as well, but it isn't like Chelsea had much to play for either.

Moyes has said that he is going to be committed to the Toffees, but I can only speculate when the greener grass of a bigger team will eventually lure him to leave Everton. I really think that time will be when SAF leaves Manchester United and Moyes will leave Everton at that point in time. That will not be happening this year so let's look forward to next season.

The key questions for Everton going forward:

1. Will they be able to keep Baines, Jagielka, Fellaini, and Rodwell?

2. Can they find a consistent scoring option from the Striker position?

3. Will Moyes leave this year if ownership is unable or unwilling to turn down the money for the aformentioned players?

4. Can we get off to a strong start and stay healthy?

I will attempt to answer some of these questions.

1. Unfortunately, unless they all turn down bigger offers elsewhere and honor their current contracts the answer appears to be "no". I am not sure Everton will be able to afford to keep such players who are in high demand by bigger clubs. Baines just signed a new contract, but the way he has played over the past two years bigger clubs will be calling and offering more than Everton can match. Jagielka is in the same boat as Baines and both of them may want to compete for hardware that they may not be able to compete for at Everton. I am not saying Everton can't compete, it is just hard when you are in the position (financially) that they are in. Rodwell is a player that is very intriguing to me. He is very young and when healthy, plays very well and I am sure at some point he will want to be a starter, but Fellaini is the player in front of him. Fellaini is the one that I would say Moyes would be more likely to part ways with. He cost Everton 15 million pounds and may be somewhat expendable. Rodwell is behind him and his offensive game seems to be better than Fellaini and is less prone to yellow cards. He [Fellaini] has sustained some pretty devastating injuries the past two seasons, but is young (23) and seemed to recover and play well after last seasons injury. Moyes may do well to part ways with Fellaini during the January (2012) window. That way Fellaini will have shown that he is still a very good player and is fully recovered from his injury. Then again, that puts Rodwell back on the bench and may create a problem there.

One thing that we cannot discount is that some of these players may have seen what happened with other players that left Everton for greener pastures. Players such as Pienaar and Lescott, who transferred due to wages and to play on the "big stage" and initially both struggled to to acclimate to their new clubs. Pienaar still seems to be looking to find his form with Tottenham.

My Predicition: Jagielka will eventually be sold to Liverpool and Fellaini will be sold at some point next year.

2. Everton needs to find a consistent scorer who is a striker that can stay in form and not often injured. Saha will have spurts in which he plays so well for a period of a few games, but in the end will sustain some 3 week or season ending injury during training. I like what Beckford brings to the table for the Toffees. He does well running off the ball and seems to find ways to get into space and to get open. He scored 10 goals this year in what I would call his adjust year to the Premier League from the Championship. Beckford does seem to get lazy at times and is not always willing to run as much as he should, but I figure that Moyes knows this and assumed there would be a period of adjustment to the Premier League. I look for Beckford to be in the Starting XI going forward. Saha is older and to often injured to be counted on consistently.

The bright side is that Yak (Yakubu) played very well on his loan in the Championship with Leicester by scoring 11 goals in 20 games. However, can Yakubu stay in shape and hungry to produce in the Premier League. I wonder if Moyes will flip Yakubu's success for some money to buy other players. Even after last years bad year had by Yakubu that was very strong interest in Yakubu by other teams. The only thing that stopped him from being moved was Moyes asking price after the year Yakubu had.

My prediction
: Saha and Yakubu are sold for money and opportunities for Anichebe and Beckford.
My sleeper prediction: David Moyes grabs Micheal Owens as a reclamation project on the cheap.

3. Moyes seems keen to stay for the long haul, but the big opportunity is coming for him and the questions and whispers still continue. Despite how many times Moyes has said he is not leaving, it seems as if others see what Moyes refuses to or will not acknowledge publicly. He is a wanted man for a coach by teams with bigger wallets. Also, it has to be hard for Moyes to see all the unknown and young talent he has brought in on a thrifty nickel that Everton could not and may not be able afford to keep: Pienaar, Lescott, Rodwell, Jagielka, Fellaini, Baines, and most of all Wayne Rooney. At some point it has be frustrating knowing that in the end one ends up becoming a farm system for the bigger clubs. I would like to think that Moyes would like to win a Premier League title before it is all said and done. Initially, I thought that maybe, just maybe, if SAF were to retire after winning it all (again) this year that Moyes would be the ideal candidate.

My Prediction: Moyes stays this year.
My sleeper Prediction: Moyes bolts for Chelsea

4. Health is not something that can be predicted or forcasted. However, getting rid of players who are constantly injured may not be a bad idea either. Thanks for the good times Saha, but time for you to go.

My prediction: Everton starts strong and I hope for good health.

These are just my thoughts and hopefully other Everton fans will share their perspective as well.

A few of my "predictions" have been off, but worthy of noticing. Fellaini has stated that he is looking to leave Everton perhaps this year (based on how Moyes advances the team) or next year. He is looking to move to play in European Competitions. Everton will continue to try to make due with what they have and they do have the players that would allow them to play in Europe every year. If they could just stay healthy or get off to a much stronger start.

Everton is still looking to move Yobo and Yakubu and I am sure it is even more of pressing issue after losing out to Newcastle on Ba. According to all the reports, Moyes is said to want Wigan's N'Zogbia, but right now is having a hard time coming up with the money. Well, selling Fellaini may be a good starting point even if he can sell Yobo and Yakubu. That might allow Moyes to buy a striker and N'Zogbia while allowing Jack Rodwell to take over Fellaini's spot. It would allow Moyes to keep Jagielka (rumored to Liverpool) as well as Baines (Man City allegedly trying to get him)for another run at trying to break into the top four and back into Europe.

There has also been some speculation about Mikel Arteta heading to Valencia. It is from bleacherrepot, who in turn cites another source for this rumor. Also on the rumor front, Everton is said to be making a play for Sergio Canales on a loan.

This offseason has been kind of slow for Everton, but I am really hoping that Everton make a move. Maybe it is time to let Fellaini go and allow us to get two players or more with the transfer funds from the sale of Fellaini, Yobo, and Yakubu. I just wonder what Fellaini's asking price is.

Apparently Man City is wanting to do a cash+players swap to get Leighton Baines.

MANCHESTER CITY are lining up a player-plus-cash deal for Everton and England full-back Leighton Baines.

City boss Roberto Mancini rates the left back as the best in the Premier League and originally made enquiries about the player months ago.

The Manchester outfit values the 26-year-old at £20m and will offer £10m plus the pick of two players which may include Emmanuel Adebayor and Craig Bellamy.

LINK

Not sure how credible this is, but if true it is interesting none the less. Everton are in desperate need of a striker and some money. Although Moyes is quite reluctant to let go of some of his stars, he has shown he will if the player requests/wants to leave. The £10 million price tag, plus filling a hole up top with a proven striker may become too much for Moyes to resist. Then again, I am not sure how well Adebayor would feel about coming to Everton since he was recently on record as only wanting to play for "teams that can win hardware". The £10 million also would allow Everton to get N'Zogbia as well.

On other fronts, Yobo should be back on his way permanently to Fenerbahce here shortly. The price tag: £4 million. ( The £6 million price is on the high side) I have seen it mentioned at 4 million.

With last weeks game postponed, Everton was looking for a good start to the season. Everton seemed to lack first touch on the ball and a lot of their passes were not as sharp as they should be. Everton had a lot of chances and failed to convert them. Barkley play very well today when given the opportunity to play. I am sorely disappointed in this outcome and that was only enhanced by the poor play from good players. Hope we can get it on mark next week.

With Bill Kenwright already making mention of the teams debt, one has to wonder if Everton might be looking to sell Rodwell, Jagielka, or Baines to help pay down some of that debt.

Well Everton sells Arteta (Arsenal), Beckford (Leicester), and Yakubu (Blackburn). Arteta brought in £10 million and Beckford could bring up to £4.4 million pounds. I am unsure of how much Yakubu brought in, but apparently once Arsenal showed interest Arteta asked to be moved if a good bid came in for Everton.

I think that the sell of Arteta was good business considering that Everton received £10 million for him and that he is 29 years old and hasn't been quite the same player since the knee injury a few years ago. Beckford had a lot of potential to get better and I would have liked to have seen what he might have been able to accomplish this year. 10 goals in 38 appearances in his first season in the Premier League is not a bad talley, but I think Everton sold high on Beckford. It appears David Moyes was is locked into Saha and developing Anichebe. With Everton £45 million pounds in the hole, I am only assuming that the money from the sales of these players went to paying off some of that debt.

Everton did bring in two players on loan. Denis Stracqualursi and Royston Drenthe (Real Madrid) were brought in on loan. Moyes has done a good job in finding talent that suits his needs and I look forward to what these two players will bring.

I just can't help but to wonder if Moyes is going to start rethinking his commitment to Everton going forward if these money problems do not start to resolve themselves. It has to be incredibly frustrating to finish top 7 each year and to not be able to add any players. I am a huge Moyes fan and if we can finish in the top 7 this year, I will be pleased.

Everton just signed two players on loan so that clock needs some adjusting. It has been quite awhile since I can remember us signing someone straight up. The last players I remember us signing (not including loans) was Heitinga and Distin. They were purchased with some of the money from the Lescott sale (Manchester City) and the remaining balance went to the bank from that sale. Beckford was a "free transfer" signing.

The Toffees manage another win today with a 3-1 tally over Wigan. Was a good game for Everton with them dictating the pace of the game for the most part. Vellios comes into the game and scored a very nice goal after holding the ball up to pass to Hibbert. Which, in turn, Hibbert would cross to Vellios and Vellios would put into the back of the net. Roysten Drenthe did a very nice job as well on the left side of the midfield in his minutes as well. He has very good pace and touch on the ball as well. His goal was completely textbook: one touch to compose the ball and shot on goal. Interesting enough his goal was assisted by Vellios.

Stracqualursi came into the game at the 82' minute mark did some things well. However, I would like to see him get some more playing time before I can say how I think he may or may not fit in for Moyes. I can imagine the Drenthe will see more playing time in the weeks ahead. Especially when one considers who we are playing. Everton has a tough stretch of games coming up over the next three weeks in playing Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Fulham, and Manchester United. What a brutal couple of weeks for Everton and if we manage to scrap 6 points out of that I would be happy. Granted I would love to get all 12 but I can't see that happening. Then again, this is why they play the game on the pitch.

Well a 2-0 loss for the Toffees today while being down to 10 man most of the game. It is hard to beat a quality team like Liverpool, but even more difficult when you are playing against the match official as well. Truly some of the most horrendous officiating I have seen since the US vs Slovenia in the 2010 World Cup.

Tim Howard came up big with a PK save, but in the end Everton could not withstand the Liverpool attack. Still in the middle of a rough stretch of games with the level of competition we are playing. Chelsea next week with Fulham and Manchester United to follow. It sure would be nice to draw some points from some of the upcoming matches. I hate losing to Liverpool and this game only fuels that emotion.

Not an Everton fan but, man, that red card was a horrifically bad call. Two weeks in a row now I've seen that kid on loan from Real Madrid, can't remember the name, come in off the bench and play well.

You are talking about Drenthe. He has fantastic pace and ball skills, however he carries a reputation as being a player who is difficult to coach. He had problems at Hercules F.C last year when he was on loan. If you saw last weeks game, he had a big turnover that led directly to Manchester City's first goal.

He has a very good soccer IQ as well and seems to play in fashion that is conducive to being "one step ahead". I like him myself and I am hoping he works out with Everton and somehow they can get him on a permanent deal. Only problem is, if he does well he will cost a lot of money as Real Madrid paid big bucks to get him. Also, Everton do not have any money right now to work with and Real will not let him go for pennies on the dollar. He does have one goal with Everton in his brief appearances, but I imagine that we will see more of him going forward and potentially as a starter.

Best ever story I've heard about Drenthe:

When he moved to Real Madrid a reporter asked him, "How often do you have sex?" Drenthe replied: "You mean, with my wife?"

Completely dominated by Chelsea today and there is still 15 minutes left as I type this. Chelsea is a strong team and even though they have the finances to get the players, the brand of football they are playing is just really nice to watch.

Unfortunately for Everton, we seem to be getting off to another slow start in the beginning of the season. If Everton continue to falter and are low in the standings around the January transfer window. I would expect them to unload Jagielka and Fellaini. Fellaini looks flat and at some point it might be a good idea to think about finding a way to get him some more scoring opportunities. His value has to be quite low at this point.

It is frustrating to watch a team with such potential stumble out of the blocks year after year. I didn't think the Arteta sale would hurt this team so much and thought Arsenal overpaid a bit to be quite honest. However, this team lacks any midfield play right now and a conduit to make the play happen. I knew this would be a tough stretch of games, but I figured we would draw some points, but we haven't been able to get any.

EDIT:

I really like Drenthe. I like his pace and his touch on the ball. I just wish we could find a way to make his move permanent.

Not a word about Timmy Howard? To be sure it was in a loss, which tempers it a bit -- but it's not every day a keeper scores from his own box. Well done, sir.

Why is it so hard to find this video online? The EPL seems quite draconian about it's highlights.

Don't look now, but Donovan with another assist to put Everton up 1-0 over City. Game now at 64th minute. He's really provided the spark for their once woeful offense.

Saw it pointed out that except for Tim Howard's goal, Donovan has assisted or set-up every one of Everton's goals since his loan began. Five assists and a cross to Fellaini that Cahill put away. Pretty impressive.

You know, I've grown to respect Donovan a lot. But I wish he would just stay in England and fulfill his potential. He's easily been Everton's best player on his loan. If we ever want our national team to be a threat, they have to play in Europe full time.
