This team is really enjoyable to watch. Fair, Waiters, Joseph are all great and everyone else has a role. And Scoop is not playing like an idiot. Really really good team. Look forward to the two Uconn games later this year. The Saturday night game at Gampel might be the only chance for this team to lose in the regular season.

Ho hum, an 8-point victory against a squad they hadn't beaten in a hundred years. Five guys in double figures, even shot 87% from the line.

One big negative (and it's been happening lately): got killed on the glass, 38-24. How a front line (the back line of the 2-3 zone) of 7-0, 6-8, 6-7 gets destroyed on the backboards, when all three of those guys are tremendous athletes, is beyond me. I know boxing out in a zone is more difficult, but come on, that's ridiculous.

It's a combination of them playing a zone and them aggressively trying to blOck shots. Often times the latter takes you out of good rebounding position.

One thing Cuse does now is get out in transition

They also won that game shooting pretty poorly from 3 (and missing quite a few open shots). Joseph, in particular, struggled. They need Joseph and Southerland to find their stroke if they want to get through the next few games unscathed.

I'm telling you right now, I think that Southerland may be the best NBA prospect on the entire team. It's easy to say Waiters, who should be a good pro (NBA body, 6'4", can drive or shoot deep, tremendous athlete), but Southerland is 6'8", very long wingspan, can jump through the roof, and is, generally, accurate from about 25 feet out. That's an NBA small forward right there.

dude, I like Southerland and all, but that is just nuts. He's a nice shooter off the bench, but he has no real discernible skills outside of a smooth shot. He has no handle, no floor game, can't create his own shot, isn't a particularly adept passer and is a below average rebounder. I agree he is a top notch athlete, but his lack of basketball IQ makes him play slower than he should. Also, to this point in his career, has been awesome against weaker mid major schools and quite often disappears against Big East teams. That doesn't bode well for the next level

In my opinion, there are several pros on this team. Dion is pretty easily the best NBA prospect at the present, though Melo if he continues to develop at a rapid pace could be right there. Joseph, if things break right, could possibly be a 7-8 guy in a rotation. I think Carter-Williams will mature into an NBA prospect and I'm a big fan of CJ Fair's game and think he might be a sneaky good pro if he can extend his range and showcase more of an ability to create his own shot. Fair is above average at pretty much everything. Maybe...MAAAAYYYYBE Southerland, if things really fall into place for him overseas or in the D-League and he becomes much more consistent, might find a niche role on a team as a reserve 3 point specialist. Personally, I'd put that the chances of that at less than 1%

Southerland strikes me as the very poor man's Wes Johnson (and Johnson's looking like a dud as a pro right now, too). He cannot put the ball on the floor, and even though he's a big, big dude with serious hops, he doesn't rebound like you'd want him to (Johnson, on the other hand, was a beast on the boards). Frankly, I'm starting to wonder about Kris Joseph, too. It almost seems like he's regressed in terms of being able to take people off the dribble. He was often the "make a play" guy on that 09-10 team, and now it's like he either dunks off a lob or he shoots a three.

Look, I know Southerland has holes in his game. But again, he's big, rangy, an incredible athlete, and can shoot. The odds are that he won't make the NBA because most guys don't make the NBA - even guys with better college games than Southerland. I just think, how many NBA teams could use a guy with his plusses? Pretty much every one.

But your original statement was that you thought Southerland was the best pro prospect on the team. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and all, but that is an extremely fringe opinion. I haven't read or heard anything even suggesting Southerland is a NBA draft pick, and that doesn't surprise me for the reasons I listed above. He simply isn't all that great of a player. Personally, I'd consider Southerland probably the 7th or 8th best potential NBA prospect on the team, which is to say he isn't a prospect.

As far as NBA prospects go, I'd rank them:
Waiters
Melo
Christmas
Fair
Carter-Williams
Joseph

BIG GAP

Keita/Southerland in whichever order. Each possesses a potentially useful NBA tool but has significant gaps to fill before they even make it on the prospect horizon.

In my opinion, Jardine and Triche are good to great college players with no NBA potential.

That's a huge win. To show that they can beat a good team on the road without Melo was important. In the end, losing that game at Notre Dame and having to play without Fab for a few games (hopefully only a few) might end up being a blessing for this squad.

ESPN says melo still out for tomorrow vs. WVU. Having seen a pissed off professor or two stick it to an athlete in my days as a college counselor, I am betting there is a fair chance this doesn't get resolved before the end of the season, so they'd better get used to playing and winning without him.

I wish we knew exactly what the deal is. I want Melo playing as much as anyone, but if he really didn't do the schoolwork, he should get no special favors simply because he's an athlete.

Yeah, I agree with you. I'm assuming he owes work for a class from last semester and the deadline for an "Incomplete" grade has passed. He probably needed those credits in order to be academically eligible in terms of the number of credits has has earned. The Incomplete would hold the place of a grade for a few weeks, but once the deadline passed, he may have received an "F" if he didn't complete the required work. This could have all sorts of ramifications on his eligibility, from credits earned in a semester to credits earned overall to GPA. And if the professor that he owed is even a touch pissed off and therefore inflexible (or even NOT pissed off but just following the rules) for whatever reason, then Fab's gonna have a tough time getting back on the court; no one except that professor has the power to change the grade.

This is my working theory. Who knows what is actually going on.

Those refs will be getting a call on Monday. Ruined a great game. Just wait until Huggy Bear sees the tape.

Huge call from a how obvious a miss it was. Not so huge from the overall outcome. Down 2, 10 seconds left. Best case for WVU is that the game goes to OT as Syracuse would have had the ball and 8-9 seconds. Having said that the kids deserved to play it out themselves. Both teams.

Digger going off just now on the officials, saying all three should be suspended. "You've got three refs on the court, how many do you need, five!?"

Huggy Bear in postgame deadpan delivery. "Do you think they missed the call?" "Nah, I don't think they missed the call, I've seen the tape, I know they missed it."

No great big deal overall, Syracuse makes the dance as a high seed, WVU makes it in the 5-7 range.

SU got absolutely destroyed on the glass again....this is becoming very tiresome and frustrating. How can a team with such tall, long, and athletic big men consistently get owned in the rebounding department? It's ridiculous.

That and the non-call on goaltending.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Yes, it is better to be lucky sometimes...if I were a WVU fan I would have tossed my TV through the window. I really can't believe all 3 of them missed it.

I feel like they are thisclose to having a 2 or 3 game skid, mostly due to the rebounding difference game in and game out. How many second chance (or third, or fourth) points did WVU get yesterday? I know it's tough to block out in a zone, especially a zone that is spread out and contends almost every shot, but they had 36 rebounds to our 20, and 15 of their 36 were offensive. That's not good.

#78 The Filthy One

  • 662 posts

Aside from the rebounding margin, which has been awful, Waiters is in a horrific funk. The last Syracuse possession of the game was pretty putrid. Waiters waits for a ball screen, drives to the left and puts up an off-balance bank shot that doesn't fall. Lowsy.

It's been a rough three-game stretch, shooting-wise, too. Southerland, Waiters, Joseph, even Triche, to some degree, are all off. How many wide open 3s did they miss yesterday? If they sink 3 of the 10 they missed, they're winning by double-digits. Hopefully the week off will give them time to get Fab back and get well on the offensive end.

No kidding.

Fair was manhandled all night. Haven't seen that very much this year.
The dribble penetration proved to be an excellent weapon. Wish they'd done it more, especially in the first half.
Huge game by Joseph and a very satisfying win. Happy for Jimmy B!

Flashes of laziness combined with more flashes of brilliance today. Overall a nice win, but sometimes their lazy runs (poor shot selection, poor rebounding, poor defense) make me nervous; they will have a tough time putting better opponents away with that sort of play come tourney time. But we'll take the win. Waiters and Scoop looked good today, as did Joseph (as usual_.

I thought Fair was their best player today. Excellent on the glass (SU actually outrebounded UConn, which I find amazing), and very good offensively.

Lundquist and Kellogg were pumping Drummond up all game long, but compare the two:

Drummond: 5-13 fg, 3-7 ft, 13 pts, 7 reb, 2 blocks, 1 assist, 3 turnovers
Fair: 6-8 fg, 2-3 ft, 14 pts, 12 reb, 1 block, 1 steal, 3 assists, 1 turnover

Scoop was also terrific in every way, which was great to see.

Great win today.

I'd say tonight is one of the biggest challenges of the season at L'Ville. Pitino has his team playing well right now, very good defensively and on the boards. It'll be interesting to see if he goes with the 2-3, as Georgetown had some good success vs. 'Cuse last week using it. Here's hoping we get out on the break when we can, and we knock down some 3s when we can't run. Oh, and rebound.
