Lefthander Miguel Pena declined to sign with the Nationals as a fifth-round pick out of high school a year ago, and he has been the same pitcher as a freshman at San Jacinto JC this spring. He hasn't added any strength to his 6-foot-2, 160-pound frame, and he still works at 88-91 mph early in games before losing velocity in the middle innings. He has a clean delivery that he repeats well, and he throws a decent curveball and changeup. He doesn't have a plus pitch but he's a polished lefthander, and he'll probably go around the same spot again in the draft.

He throws his fastball in the 87-88 range now, and could sit around 90 when he physically matures. He complements the heater with a plus 74-76 mph curveball with hard two-plane break that flummoxes lefties and righties alike.

Betts was the top signee for the embattled Tennessee program, which was headed for last place in the Southeastern Conference. He could be a college difference-maker for his hitting ability, speed and solid athleticism, the last of which helped him be an all-conference basketball player and the state's boys bowler of the year in 2010. The question was whether any of Betts' tools was a carrying tool. He's an above-average runner but not a true burner. However, he has good baserunning instincts, and his running ability should play in pro ball offensively. Some scouts believe the speed will play better defensively and want to shift him to cente rfield. Others believe his solid first-step quickness and quick-twitch athleticism give him a chance to stay in the infield, though more likely at second base than at short. He has some footwork issues to iron out to stay in the dirt. Betts has good hitting fundamentals and has excellent makeup and intangibles.

Brian Dupra, good pick #Nats #bestdraft

I think the Sox must think there won't be hard slotting next year. Otherwise there is no excuse passing up all those great signability guys.I'm with ya, it started with Bell going to Pitt and then downhill from there.

Two grand slams, a two-run home run, 10 RBIs. One blown-away crowd that included a scout from the Washington Nationals, who had his fastball clocked from 87 to 91 mph a couple of weeks ago, before Kukuk turned 17.
The beauty of Kukuk’s decision — should he pitch or should he hit — is that it doesn’t need to be made yet.
“I just want to keep doing both for as long as I can,” said Kukuk, 6-foot-4, 195-pound growing boy.
Kukuk has committed orally to Kansas University. He said he wants to go to college to pursue a degree. If he keeps improving, particularly as a pitcher, and the scouts keep liking what they see, he could reconsider that, but he says he’s not worried about it, and he says it a soft-spoken way that lends it credibility.
For now, he focuses on becoming a more complete player, a smoother right fielder with better footwork, and a more polished pitcher, developing his offspeed pitches. He said the work he does with personal trainer Tyler Naylor “four or five times a week” in the offseason makes him a better pitcher and hitter.
“We do a lot of stuff to make my legs stronger,” he said. “My legs were very weak, and I can really tell the difference. And I do a lot of shoulder exercises.”
The guess here is that if he continues to increase his velocity, as his high school coach, Mike Hill, believes he will, major-league scouts will want to look at him as a pitcher first. If so, here’s hoping he gets drafted by a National League team. The swing is just too sweet for it to get wrapped in mothballs at such a young age.
The grapevine has it that Kukuk’s initial bonus request will be in the neighborhood of $1.2 million. That doesn’t mean he won’t negotiate down from there, but it does mean he’s not going to be susceptible to a wink-and-nod deal.

Golson could go even earlier than Robbins, as scouts have fallen in love with the speed and athleticism that led him to sign with Ole Miss as a cornerback in football. The 5-10, 180-pound Golson batted .325 with three homers, 23 RBIs and 16 steals as Pascagoula's center fielder in 2011. He is rated among the top 50 high school players in the country by both Baseball America and ESPN.com's Keith Law.
Golson, who turned 18 in July, has said repeatedly that he plans to suit up in both sports for Ole Miss in the fall but would consider any professional baseball offer before making a final decision. Since his football career gives him leverage during baseball contract negotiations, he could command a six- or seven-figure signing bonus usually reserved for players drafted much earlier.
"He'll be drafted high because of his talent, but the thing with him is, (teams) are not sure how bad he wants to play baseball," the NL scout said. "He can fly and has some really good wrists. He'll really strong in his hands and has a quick bat, but he's not really a polished hitter yet. If he had Robbins' discipline at the plate, he'd definitely be first-round material."

Dave (Boston)
Now the Red Sox tab Golson, between him and Kukuk, feeling any better about their second day actions? How much would those two take to sign do you think?
Klaw (3:22 PM)
Yes, much more typical of their recent drafts. I don't know signability on either kid other than that both are signable at some non-insane number.
Jason (State College)
Your best guess, how much will it take for Josh Bell to sign?
Klaw (3:25 PM)
The sense I've gotten is that $6-8 million wouldn't do it.

No, of course not. I always watch the video and then read the reports, which are consensus by multiple scouts. It's not BA's personal list. I give it more weight than any other rankings.I'm definitely not going to base my opinion on one list. I'm not that naive. Part of being indefinitely disappointed was the pre-draft hype. The FO knows something about next years draft that we don't.
