It's not unheard of.

Edit: And one closer to home...
And another.
Looking around, it is more prominent than I thought. The two you've mentioned (I knew Mauer was tall) but Wieters is 6'5" too. Posada is 6'2" as well.

Nice LH batting stroke, looks pretty damned good going to the opposite field.
Needs some major dental work.

Protected from what?
You only get compensation for failure to sign first round picks, not supplemental, 2nd, or 3rd rounders.
Yeah, this was my question. I couldn't recall.
Though Bigpupp will always be in my heart for responding so promptly, I will choose to believe that you are right because a) that's what my recollection was, and b) by forming a longer sentence, you sound more authoratative (not always the rule, but it is so in this case).
Thanks for the re-clarification.

Tex is 6'2 if we're going down an inch. It really isn't all that rare.

that is probably the funniest (only?) thing you have ever said on here that stuff should be part of the draft write ups... needs proactiv, has more teeth than a shark, etc

In a chat yesterday (I think), Kevin Goldstein said that baseball should allow trading of picks, but that hard slotting would "kill baseball." (He said there would be a follow up article explaining his position.)
Has anyone heard that position/argument before? Do you know how the theory goes?
If you are good at multiple sports, but can "only" get a slotted 250K (let's say) from where you are drafted in baseball, you go on to college and play football or basketball or whatever instead. In other words, more athletes would steer away from baseball instead of towards it if you knew you could cash in at an earlier age.
Something like that.
I like Goldstein (which judging from others, I'm probably in the minority) but I think his comments are a bit hyperbolic.

It's the first three rounds. This year the Seattle Mariners got compensation pick #121 for failure to sign Ryne Stanek from last years 3rd round.

In the high school ranks, righthander Jordan Cote, at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, has a projectable frame that scouts dream about. His fastball sits at 88-90 mph and touches 92, and adding strength and pitching in warmer weather should help bump his velocity, especially because he has great hand speed. His arm action is clean, but his mechanics need to be refined, as he has long levers and is still growing into his body. Inability to repeat his delivery restricts him from throwing a consistent breaking ball. Cote has better feel for his curveball than his slider, though he shows the ability to spin the ball. He hasn't needed to throw his changeup and it's a work in progress. For his size more than his stuff, Cote has drawn comparisons to Chris Carpenter, One scout said Cote has the highest ceiling of any pitcher in the Northeast. He should get taken between the eighth and 12th rounds, with late-spring buzz that he could be going higher.

Where are you seeing Tek at 6'4? I keep seeing him listed at 6'2 wherever I look.

Varitek and Salty are both 6'4.
Really? Varitek is "officially" 6'2. That said, I'm 5'10 and I've stood beside him at Fenway and he's at least a full inch shorter than me.

Winker probably had a major arm injury a few nights ago. Osich has health concerns.

Purke is actually a draft eligible sophomore, so he can go back to TCU, show he is healthy and be drafted again as a junior and still maintain some draft leverage.I'd be surprised if Purke signs. He should go back to TCU and pitch his senior year and shows that he's healthy. Could be a Raunado and go to the Cape and pitch, but he's not nearly as healthy as Raunado was at this point last season.

At what point does Osich fall far enough that the health concerns are outweighed by the value that a team feels it can get from the pick?

Wow... my bad. I had thought it was only the first round, but it appears that you are correct.
First and Second round, you get a pick 1 greater than your unsigned pick. (Ie: if you didn't sign your 1st rounder taken 10th, you get the 11th pick next year). If you fail to sign your Third round pick, you get a sandwich pick between the 3rd and 4th rounds.
Learn something new everyday, it appears.

That's weird. You guys are right. I'm positive he used to be listed at 6'4. They changed it.
They also exaggerate the heights like crazy.
I'm 5'8/5'9 and I met Prince Fielder...same exact height as me, yet he's listed at 5'11.
Gio Gonzalez mysteriously grew an inch this year. Same with Cahill and Romero.

I mentioned it in another thread, but please forgive the repetition... my son induced Jerez into a ground out this year.Jerez:
I'm no kind of pro evaluator, but I did see him play 3 times. While he was likely the best senior player I saw this year in NYC, it wasn't like he was otherworldly dominating. [I like two juniors more.] He is clearly quite an athlete -- I found the pre-games throws he took from the outfield more impressive than his pre-game BP (which was pretty noteworthy itself, needless to say).
He came from the Dominican to Grand Street where he played last year as a Freshman. This year, allegedly because of a new and improved transcript that showed up, he played as a Senior. Not the normal aging direction for players from the Dominican... but fishy at any rate.
Not that it means anything at all, but he appeared to be a nice enough kid -- paying attention in handshake lines and the like while many of his teammates were busy congratulating only each other.
I am highly confident he has zero interest in pursuing college.
At any rate, because he's a city kid (kind of), because my kid got him to bounce out to third, because he told the MFY his first allegiance was to Pedro and Papi -- here's to you, Williams.
