The picks: Matt Barnes (19), Blake Swihart (26), Henry Owens (36),Jackie Bradley (40)

Summary: I hinted at this on Twitter, but some of the credit for Boston's draft is just that the right guys fell to the team. However, the Red Sox do deserve the rest of the credit for actually taking them (and, presumably, paying them). They got Blake Swihart, who I think will be an impact hitter and has a chance to do it as a catcher, with their second pick after preseason top-10 guy Matt Barnes -- whose velocity was fine but didn't show great command this year -- fell to them at No. 19. Henry Owens was spot on in the sandwich round as a projectable lefty who already hits 93 mph and has great deception, and they took a flier on Jackie Bradley's recovery from injury much as they did last year with Anthony Ranaudo.

The Sox will select at 81, 111, 142 and every 30 picks after that.

I knew Osich could have been injured!!!! I'm like the draft Budda!!! Anyway elbow tightness is super sketchy on any pitcher, but he already had TJ surgery.

I just found out on of my good friends is good friends with Meo. I sent him a FBook message to see if he knows anything. He probably won't get back to me in time.

Today I really want a Beede and Nimmo replacement.

Bell is considered an extremely difficult sign that could take Top 5-10 money to forego college.
2. Andrew Susac, C -- Oregon State
Susac is believed to want first-round money and he has some leverage as a draft-eligible sophomore.
3. Anthony Meo, RHP -- Coastal Carolina
Meo has first-round abilities but is a steal at any point in the draft now.
4. Dillon Howard, RHP -- Searcy HS (Ark.)
Howard may become tougher and tougher to sign and picks pass, with the exception of a couple of stops in round 2 -- Washington and Detroit, emphasis on Detroit.
5. Daniel Norris, LHP -- Science Hill HS (Tenn.)
See Howard, but with a stronger commitment to first-round money or school.
6. Austin Hedges, C -- JSerra HS (Calif.)
Another tough sign as he's slated to head to UCLA. Could be a first-round pick again in three years.
7. Charles Tilson, OF -- New Trier HS (Ill.)
Will want seven figures and then some and is committed to Illinois.
8. Derek Fisher, OF -- Cedar Crest HS (Penn.)
Also a strong commitment to school but more signable then Hedges, Norris and Howard.
9. Josh Osich, LHP -- Oregon State
Elbow tightness cut his most recent start short, but I'm told it's precautionary only. Very signable.
10. Nick Delmonico, C/3B -- Farragut HS (Tenn.)
Strong commitment but a good athlete and might be worth twice slot money.
11. Johnny Eierman, OF -- Warsaw HS (Mo.)
Speed, defense and a hit tool.
12. Dillon Maples, RHP -- Pinecrest HS (N.C.)
Plus stuff but may be a reliever long term.
13. Jorge Lopez, RHP -- Milagrosa Academy (P.R.)
I am told he won't make it out of round 2, but I think things have changed since that claim.
14. Jason Esposito, 3B -- Vanderbilt
Started year as potential first rounder. Could be another Casey Blake at the plate, better defense.
15. Senquez Golson, OF -- Pensagoula HS (Miss.)
Toolsy outfielder one scout comp'd to Adam Jones.
16. James McCann, C -- Arkansas
Second best college catcher in the class. Leader, good hands, adequate arm, hit tool. Won't last too long.
17. Alex Dickerson, LF/1B -- Indiana
May be this year's version of Rich Poythress.
18. Matt Purke, LHP -- TCU
Purke has had shoulder "bursitis" and never performed at the level scouts expected. Tough sign, maybe three or four times slot. He's a DE Soph, so he likely returns to TCU.
19. Matt Dean, 3B -- The Colony HS (Texas)
Solid power bat that at least one crosschecker preferred over Tyler Goeddel and Travis Harrison.
20. Tony Zych, RHP -- Louisville
One of the top pure relievers in the class, graded closely with Nick Maronde from Florida and South Carolina's Matt Price.

So from what I've read here or there, the biggest competitor to the Sox for Bell is the Tigers. They pick before the Sox today. They could go big, but I think they would want to play safe and draft someone they know they can sign since this is their first pick.

I would expect that Bell's phone ringing off the hook last night and this mOrning. I think if he is selected in the second or third rounds, the teams know what it will take and get it done. Unless the team intentionally drafts him not to sign to save money and keep him away from the sox or yanks or whomever. That seems highly unlikely

With Bell falling past the 60th pick I think it's time to consider that he might be serious about not wanting to sign for any amount of money and is going to college. Like everyone else I'd love for the Sox to take him, but if he's going to turn down top 5 money then it's a waste of a pick. He wouldn't be the first guy with top of the first round talent to go to college anyway.

Last night, the Pirates GM said that the owners had given them the go ahead and go all out in the draft, so i doubt they would take Bell unless they were very sure they could sign in within their budget.

I think everyone thinks a letter like that means something along those lines.

Yes they have to deal with this all the time. Usually, you fill a hole with a kid that wasn't going to get any money or go the JUCO route.

I'm fairly ignorant about college baseball scholarship rules, but it seems that if they commit one of the 11.7 to Bell and he doesn't sign with the Pirates until just before school starts, by that point it might be too late to find a player(s) worthy of the scholarship Bell left behind for the upcoming season. So in hindsight it would have been better if they took Bell's scholarship and offered it to some kid who ended up at Florida or wherever. Is this a serious enough issue that colleges make some judgement of whether or not they are being used only as leverage when comminting one of their scarce scholarhips to a top high school kid?
