Had committed to Georgia but signed for $330k, equivalent to third round slot money for the 2009 draft. He played third base and caught while in high school but has been used exclusively at first base since signing.
Here's his scouting report from soxprospects.com
Sturdy frame. Hits from the right side with an open stance that shuts down pretty well. He is loud with his hands before the pitch is delivered, cocking them back up and down from a position about level with his chest. Fairly smooth swing with sound mechanics, but he tends to reach for balls out of the zone. Excellent present power with plus power potential. Really drives the ball when he squares up. Excellent arm strength. Head was drafted as a third baseman, but was moved to first base in June 2010. While he looked like an average to below-average third baseman early on, he could prove to be an above-average first baseman. Good reaction time, soft hands, and scoops balls in the dirt well.
He had an underwhelming year last year with Lowell where he put up a 240/328/341 in 229 AB's, but has broken out spectacularly for Greenville. Over the first month of this season he's put up a 330/394/680 line with 9 hr's in only 97 AB's. He's still young for the league, having only turned 20 yesterday. He probably can't keep this pace up for much longer but he is showing that the plus power potential is a real possibility.
