ESPN baseball analyst Peter Gammons, 61, is undergoing surgery this afternoon for an aneurysm in his brain.

Gammons was stricken earlier today and was taken to a Boston-area hospital. He is expected to be in intensive care for the next 10 to 12 days.

Let's hope he's ok. That does not sound good...but neither did Big Ben's accident at first.

As someone who's love of baseball was greatly enhanced by reading Peter Gammons' Sunday Baseball column, I must add my voice to those hoping for a positive outcome of this.

Get well Peter. You will always be my favorite baseball scribe. I look forward to hearing your take on trade rumors around trade deadline time.

300th post I am unoriginal and unfunny. Please put me out of my misery goes to getting Peter Gammons healthy. I can't or won't imagine baseball without him. Peter was my link to Boston when I was in school down south and he reminds me of what's right with baseball. This sounds really, really serious and everyone in the Red Sox Nation and Major League Baseball as a whole will be praying for a speedy recovery.

WIN IT FOR PETER!

We all know Peter makes mistakes, can trip over his words on TV and gets too attached to his "special" people. But I think he genuinely loves the game and richly deserves his place in the Hall of Fame.

Get well soon, Peter.

I gotta say, this news is rather jarring, and came out of nowhere. Gammons seemed to be quite healthy and certainly hadn't lost his energy. Hoping for a full and speedy recovery.

Wow, it won't seem the same this week. All the best for a full recovery.

As much as we tease him on this board, I think there is a genuine love for Gammo; especially those of us who remember his '70s, '80s Sunday columns.

Ryan on with Joe & Jerry - PG was stricken this AM on Cape Cod, airlifted to Boston, in surgery right now, and the aneurysm didn't burst, which is important.

To put a better read on it. They predict 10-12 days in intensive care, which is better than having no timeline, and sounds like they predict a recovery. The rest was just (I'd guess) canned stuff they have on him that they tacked on to the two paragraphs.

Hope my read is correct. Prayers.

yikes - that's awful. After Pedro tomorrow night, Peter's the next non Red Sox who should get a long standing O next time he's in Fenway. I suppose that they're giving a tentative timetable for the ICU stay is a good thing - lots of folks don't make it that long when this happens - hopefully he has a strong recovery.

Fortunately the aneurysm didn't burst. If it did he likely wouldn't have made it to the hospital. Hopefully the surgery will take care of it and the long-term affects will be minimal.

All the best, Peter.

As much as we give him crap for his editing, grammer, and syntax, when the cards hit the table we cannot imagine a baseball world without Peter. One of the great writers of our time, and a true legend in the Journalism profession.
