We should go to Abraham's house and burn it down. Taking a well-worn cliche and juxtaposing it with a previously hot pitcher's wife is certainly grounds for accusation of plagiarism.

You're doing God's work Corsi.

When I saw that Tweet I had the exact same thought that Corsi did. I mean it's a common enough turn of phrase, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind.

You wanted to be the guy to break "The-Peter-Abraham-is-plagiarizing-BigMike's-Baseball-Wives-quip-story", Carl Bernstein.

Do they have a history or something?

From tonight:

Gordon Edes says

Ortiz has officiallly accepted arbitration

4 minutes later, PeteAbe says

Via the #RedSox, Ortiz has officially accepted arbitration.

20 minutes later, Gordon Edes says

Per Red Sox? That's a good one. Sox have not said anything re Ortiz.

Edes previously intimated that when PeteAbe says "team sources," he's just printing things he's overheard other writers saying. It's interesting that for all his thin-skinnedness, he's never gone after Edes despite Gordo given him plenty of reasons to do so.

Pete is involved in a very strange situation right now.

Brief recap: frustrated with the fact that writers were withholding votes from "suspected" steroids user Jeff Bagwell (and other players who had good numbers but zero evidence of any steroids use), an ESPN Sweet Spot Blog named "The Platoon Advantage" posted a satirical story in which they accused those same writers of "suspected" plagiarism. It was pretty clearly satire.

After Abraham reconsidered and voted for Bagwell this year, they tweeted that they had finally cleared his name of suspected plagiarism.

And then, Abraham went nuts, called ESPN, and all sorts of other things:
http://www.platoonad...ist-but-he.html

Wonder if this will make it to Boston Sports media.

I don't really know a lot about Peter Abraham or what the real story is with him and Bagwell and this "The Common Man" person. But from that exchange that was linked to a few posts above, I don't really get how Abraham is the dink here. He's pissed because someone associated with ESPN (I think?) linked him with plagiarism, and, even though it was apparently satirical, that's still a pretty serious thing for a journalist. I can see why he was like, WTF?

If the point is that his vote "no" on Bagwell was because of unfounded steroid rumors (not even rumors I guess), and gee Pete, how would you like it if your name got associated with something similar - in this case, plagiarism? .... then I think that's a pretty lame thing to do. Especially considering that we can find out who votes no for these HOF ballots (that's my understanding anyway), he had a right to be pissed that this TCM person was doing it behind a fake name.

Don't be too harsh on me if I am way off base here - I already admitted I don't know much about the story....just saying that from that little article there, I can see why Abraham would be livid. He might still be a world-class douche, I don't know, but from that story I can see his side of things.

That was basically the point - that lobbing unsubstantiated rumors around, effectively forcing Bagwell to fight against phantoms to prove his innocense, is essentially the same thing as assuming all writers plagiarize, until proven otherwise.

I don't see any reason why using a psuedonym affects the validity of the point, or should give PeteAbe any further reason for anger. Even if he honestly felt threatened by such an "accusation" (which was not actually an accusation), he had the ability to handle it in a much better way than he eventually did. Pretty dumb.

Back when he was working for LoHud and doing their blog, he made some stupid comment during an All Star game thread. I called him out on it, and told him to "die in a fire".

He emailed me (which he got via my IP address from a post months before -- lots of digging by him) and said both my ISP and my local police department had been alerted of my "threats to (his) life", and I was in big, big trouble. Yeah, just like his "boss just called (him)".

Dude's been accused of plagiarizing message board posts, and has been called out more than once by a nationally-respected baseball scribe for stealing people's tweets and saying "a major league source reports...", when all he did was steal someone else's scoop.

Did I mention he's incredibly thin-skinned for a fat guy?

A small thing, I suppose, but the pic on his Twitter page is of him Tebowing in a Pats jersey at the Broncos stadium. Given that he knows people check his Twitter feed for stories and links, it's a particularly unprofessional pic.

I think there's plenty of prickishness to go around with the TCM/PeteAbe battle, but I think TCM has a valid point.

Essentially, many writers (apparently) didn't vote for Bagwell because they thought he might be a steroid user. Is there any evidence of this? No. The reasoning goes: "This was an era with lots of steroid use. Bagwell looks like a guy with a lot of muscles. Steroids make you have a lot of muscles. Therefore maybe he used steroids. Therefore I'll keep him out of the Hall of Fame."

I think it furthers the dialog to, as TCM did, parallel that line of reasoning. "This is an era with lots of plagiarism. PeteAbe is a guy who works on the Internet. The Internet has led to lots of plagiarism. Therefore maybe he's a plagiarist. Therefore, I'll accuse him of such."

How do you like it, writers/gatekeepers?

However, TCM's self-righteousness and smugness is a little hard to handle. Really: "we all just want to say that this bitter, angry, thin-skinned, bullying, insecure bag of dicks can take a flying fuck at a rolling donut"?

Way to take the high road. But Pete doesn't cover himself with glory either. Yeah, is it a little scary to have your name associated with plagiarism? How do you think it feels to have your name associated with steroids if you didn't do them?

I think the problem with anonymous posting (as we've seen here at SoSH) is that people get internet brave and write crazy things like the above that you'd never say to someone's face or write under something bylined. I support people's ability to be anonymous, and I think it's important in the support of democracy and speaking truth to power, but the abuse of it, and/or use of it to support arguments and crusades that aren't nearly as important as you think they are, is annoying and cowardly on at least some level (says a guy writing anonymously on the internet).

If it were a personal account, nothing. But that account is used for his posts as a working reporter. I suspect, given the experience we have following Abraham, that he is not doing this in a devout fashion, but in a mocking way. Frankly either, on his professional Twitter site, would be (to me) inappropriate.

Keep it professional. Use a mugshot or a pice from him doing his job. I judge this based off what I see from most every other beat reporter columnist on Twitter. Gammons uses a dog. Seems inconsequential to me. If Abraham put a dog picture there, it wouldn't bother me. But he's someone who has used Twitter to lament not seeing Heidi Watney do handstands at Fenway, so I suppose I should expect more of him.

I don't understand your "virgin eyes" shot. If you'd like to explain it, feel free to send me a PM. Or post it here, I suppose.

Thank you. Find me one person voting against Bagwell because of unfounded PED suspicion who we didn't already know was an idiot (assuming we had even heard of them). I couldn't stand FJM most of the time but at least they didn't take themselves so seriously when going after Murray Chass for the 80th time about RBI, which to me is no different than this Bagwell thing.
