Abraham blogged yesterday afternoon that Wheeler had thrown 3 innings and 54 pitches in Pawtucket. Some TV guy came into the press box at McCoy and wondered how Pete could have gotten this so wrong. Pete eventually corrected his post after the TV guy tweeted him. Pete blamed the MILB.com website, saying he had combined Wheeler's one inning with Bowden's two innings. The guy who does the PawSox boxscore for MILB.com was sitting right next to us and he said he had done no such thing. This happens a lot in the blogosphere, I guess. I wonder how a baseball writer could blog about Wheeler throwing 54 pitches in a rehab stint without thinking how crazy that is and double-checking the info before he posted it on boston.com

MiLB GameDay had Wheeler at 3 IP and 54 pitches and then corrected it about an inning later. I know because I was following along live and posted about it in the gamethread here. I thought Arnie Beyeler had gone mad until I saw they changed it. Abraham certainly should have confirmed before blogging about it, but he wasn't making that up.

Yesterday I posted:

The fact that he retreated to the luxurious isolated comfort of his yacht instead of sticking around Fenway makes me want to call him Thurston Howell IV.

In today's Extra Bases, PeteAbe wrote:

Who goes to hang out on their yacht in the middle of letting the best manager in franchise history go? Was Thurston Howell III in town for a visit?

Coincidence?

I saw that, and thought of the post too, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I mean, John Henry on a yacht?

Just to be clear, I don't own the copyright on Gilligan's Island characters, nor has the estate of Jim Backus granted me any exclusivity of use. I'm not the first person to make a Thurston Howell joke, and I won't be the last.

But the juxtaposition is beyond odd given the timing, the identical contexts, the fact that PeteAbe is a regular reader of this site, and the fact that numerous posters here and elsewhere have made note of blog posts, tweets, one-liners, etc. written by others that have somehow made their way into his works.

I'd like to hope a Red Sox beat writer for the Boston Globe is above this.

Technically you didn't mention a Gilligan's Island character. You mentioned Thurston Howell IV, which would have been the character's son.

I didn't realize he does this. I don't see mention of it in this thread, is there somewhere else someone has pointed it out? Not that I doubt you, but if he's copying other people's stuff, that is pretty shameless.

And I stopped following him on Twitter because I find him irritating in that mode. I haven't had a problem with his blog stuff.

I'm glad some other people noticed this because I did as well and did not think it was a coincidence at all.

Can't remember if I (or anyone else) ever noted that two weeks after The Last DiMaggio posted this in January, Abraham posted this. Yeah, I bet it wouldn't be hard to find other folks who have shot this, and it could be a total coincidence, but the timing was curious.

If Abraham spends enough time here to trawl around for things he can recycle and use, he would also know what the prevailing opinion of his writing is around here. He probably figured he'd get away with it because no one here would be reading his crap anyway.

He's closer to Cafardo than Edes. I had high hopes when he came to the globe, but he's thin-skinned, smarmy (and looks like the football coach from the first season of Glee).

I had high hopes as well, but his tweets are like the worst of a SOSH gamethread. He wrote like a pissed off fan, not a professional paid to cover the team. Non-stop snark, and constant re-tweets of him talking down to those who dare question him. Ah well.

Here's a gem from that chat (keep in mind PeteAbe has over 19k tweets).

Iam anti-Twitter. I think it’s dumbing down too many writers. Nothing you do onyour phone in 140 characters can have much substance. I try and use it to linkto what I write on Boston.com that hopefully does have substance. I thinkeventually newspapers will figure out that Twitter should be a conduit. Were I a sports editor, I’d be pissed that my writers were writing more for Twitter.comthan my paper’s site.

I unfollowed him a bit ago, but it sucks because he does have a lot of good news in between the garbage, and usually faster than others. And he knows what he's talking about for the most part. But my stress level couldn't handle it.

But this is pretty low. The dumb thing is most of us wouldn't care if he had just owned up to it. Something like "Yeah, I thought I read it somewhere, must have been in my head when I was writing, sorry." That's sort of lazy and unprofessional, but flatly denying it is definitely worse.

The most amazing thing to me is that his snark would seem to just hurt his own ability to do his job. I can't believe that anyone on the team would talk to him (especially the guys like Ellsbury who he takes shots at), and he often directly insults his more intelligent readers.

I'm not trying to be a contrarian here, but if you did a Family Feud style question of "Who is the most well-known fictional rich guys?", Thurston Howell III would probably come in second behind Mr. Burns. And the odds go up if you add the qualifier "boat-bound rich guy". Aside from George Bluth Sr., I can't think of another fictional rich guy who had a bad experience on a boat other than Howell.

Sure. But then why did he lie about not visiting the site? And why not just post that since he probably looked at this thread?

If Pete's response was a snarky way of saying "that's preposterous, it's a coincidence," then I guess it fits into his personality which I addressed in the rest of my post.

Have to say, PeteA's jumped the shark for me in his recent coverage of the team's September collapse. Between that rant on "Sweet Caroline" in a recent Globe article, and his obnoxious tweet trashing "Pink Hats" for wanting to think positive about the team -- "Welcome to how the team used to be" -- and some attacks on the innovative approach to signings and development by Boston's front office, it's like he's adopting a tough-guy Old School persona.

I can understand why the CHB wants to revive the masturbatory self-loathing of the pre-2004 Nation -- with a few tweaks to include the 2011 September collapse, he can rush "The Curse of the Bambino" to another printing. But why would Pete A want to scuttle 21st century baseball and reclaim the loser garb? Just to feel like he's super tough when he's in the press box?

Why? He got a chance to actually participate in the running of a sports team, not just write about what the team he covered was doing. To do rather than just cover and report. Sounds to me like he leaped at a great opportunity.

He's now with the Calgary Flames this summer as their Director of Video and Statistical Analysis.

I'm fairly positive he has no regrets.

It's also possible that he hasn't been around in a long time and only looked at this thread after Jimmy Burns tweeted him. I haven't compared the time stamps to when Jimmy Burns tweeted him and when he checked the site because it isn't important to me.

Like JMOH said, coming up with Thurston Howell III isn't exactly tough to do when you hear the owner of a team slipped on his yacht and couldn't make the press conference.

He's still a thin skinned reporter and that would probably explain why he tried to downplay how often he visits the site. "Officer this is like only the second time I have ever gone 65 in this 55mph stretch of highway."

It IS a good idea.

I called him out on his snarky bullshit at the end of August. He and I got into it with a little back and forth:

At least twice a game @PeteAbewill respond condescendingly to a question by a fan. #clockwork
@deadheadtyler Gotta get the silly question first. Take another hit and relax.
RT @PeteAbe @deadheadtylerGotta get the silly question first. Take another hit and relax. // thank you for making my point.
@deadheadtyler That was a joke, obviously given your initial point. Oh, well, I tried. #whysoserious?
@PeteAbe I figured, but you never know. Just no need to poke fun at those who don't know as much- not everyone gets paid to watch baseball
@deadheadtyler Its just Twitter and some goofing around. I would hope people know it's just a little joke. No offense intended
@PeteAbe no offense taken here, and I get you, but it doesn't always come across that way, IMO. Just my 2 cents.
@deadheadtyler I can see your point. Thanks.

Of course this didn't change anything, but it was a worth a shot. And in fairness, the 'take another hit and relax' line made me chuckle.
