I don't think the ACC has much of an edge over the Big East right now, and if they lose Florida State they may have none at all. The ACC will make $12.91 million per team (AAV) under its new deal with ESPN. This off-season the Big East football members turned down $12.09 million per team with ESPN before their rights would hit the open market. The deal would still expire before the ACC's deal would.
Not much maybe, but still an edge....and I will stand by my hedges...if I am buying short on Wall Street, I buy short on the BE...in Vegas I take the over under on the BE imploding before the ACC. But really, it is all irrelevant. By 2015 there will be 4 mega conferences with most of the BE and ACC football schools in one of these. I don't think you will see the BE brand around any more. What you will see is probably NC State and FSU in the SEC along with Mizzou and Texas A&M, and 6 of the BE schools in the ACC with the rest of them merging with the remnants of the Big 12 , along with Boise, San Diego State and a couple of other teams from the MWC making up the 4th conference.

Pac-16
Big Ten
SEC
ACC/Big East mashup
The Big XII leftovers would be scrambling to catch on with one of the above. I'm sure Texas, Oklahoma, OK State and Kansas will be fine...Baylor, TT, Iowa State, and K State are probably going to be sweating it out (along with the Big East leftovers, Boise, Nevada, etc.).

Huh? The four conferences in your scenario would be (names TBD):
Pac-16
Big Ten
Essentially Captain that is correct. There will be 4 mega conferences. If they go with 16 teams, that is 64 programs in this upper tier. Throw in Notre Dame and some MWC schools and BYU and you get to 72 (18 teams in each conference). Those programs will control the bowls. As far as scheduling is concerned, I think you will see 14 college games by then, 10 aginst teams in your conference, 4 against non conference opponents. That way a Notre Dame for example can be slotted into an 18 team Big 10 and still play Stanford, USC, BC, Navy and the like. What these conferences are actually called is anyone's guess and it really doesn't matter ini the big picture. Bottom line is that these 64 or 72 teams will be in the hunt, in theory for BCS bowl money, etc. I also think you will see the Cotton Bowl come back and be made part of the BCS series. Now you have the 4 BCS bowls plus the Championship game played at a BCS site 1 week after the BCS bowl. By adding the Cotton Bowl, they ropund robin the BCS title game so that the named BCS bowl will host the championship.
And when you think about it, these 72 schools also are the upper escehelon of college basketball. The NCAA champion has come form one these schools every year since 1985 (Villanova beating Georgetown). That's 25 years of BCS dominance. I know we will here about George Mason and Butler, but IMHO Mason was a fluke and Butler's time has come and gone. Take those runs out of the equation and pretty much a BCS team makes the Final 4 about 85% of the time.
As for BC....unless they change their way of doing things, they will have a middle of the road program in all revenue sports and although they technically will be part of the BCS, they will never really be a threat to do anything on a national level in football. They might in hoops sometime, but not in football. The bigger the conferrences, the more $$ is involved and the more difficult it is to consistently be a top tier program. BC has never taken the next step and with a 16 or 18 team league, I think they will just be lost in the shuffle. Just my opinion.

1) When and not if the SEC increases (a lot of this was assuming A&M be first domino) the SEC would have their choice from among Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, Clemson or Florida State, or Missouri. The thinking as it seemed to me was A&M plus one of the more western crew and then one or both of Florida State and Clemson. The thinking was VT has it too good in the ACC and Virginia politics are such that the state would never allow the split of VA and VT conference wise. This would also include Maryland heading to the Big 10.
2) The SEC would drive the train in this whole process, so who would get in would depend on SEC schools and their politics (Clemson and SC, Fl and FSU etc). Still it would create amazing rivalries and a hell of an experience for fans as you would have a lot of schools in driving distance especially for football.
3) The Big East and ACC would be in tough positions, potentially losing schools to other conference and in the case of the Big East maybe losing some to the ACC (CT etc). Still, the sense was it would have to be a mashup with a lot of schools kicked to the curb and some real issues dealing with the basketball only schools and their traditional rivalries.
4) Texas going independent and being an absolute monster for TV...
Just some of it. It really sounds like the Big East and ACC are in for a shitty ride.

NC State supposedly has no interest - everyone you will here talk about this in NC says that NC State helped found the conference, they never have it better elsewhere, and the powers that be at the school have no intention of leaving a conference w Duke and UNC. Clemson is the one I think you are missing.

http://bostonherald....orts&position=3One of the deepest positions that Boston College has is running back, and it’s a good thing. That depth will be tested immediately.
Head coach Frank Spaziani announced that ACC Preseason Player of the Year Montel Harris, whose season was cut short last year when he suffered a knee injury on Nov. 20, had to undergo another arthroscopic procedure this morning. He’s expected to be out 3-to-4 weeks, though that was the original prognosis when he was hurt last year.
“I was very concerned about Montel in January. And I was very concerned about him in spring ball. I was feeling a little bit better when he was feeling better and I was telling you guys he looked like his old self. Now I’m very concerned again. And I feel bad for him, because he’s concerned, obviously,” said Spaziani.

Also, Rettig had another really strong performance in last night's scrimmage. Great sign.

Is this Shakim Phillips kid any good? A frosh WR transferring to uconn? He was 3* and 4* rated but did nothing his freshman year (weird he even played since he didn't come on campus until July?).
He was an Army AA coming out of high school and there were big things expected of him. He seemed to struggle a bit with injuries both in high school and his freshman year. Not a speed guy, he's more a possession receiver. Sounds like he was disappointed with his role this year (discussion that they may have asked him to redshirt). Also talk that the academic rigor was a turnoff. If he stays on the field he could be a solid contributor. Hope things work out for him.

AP rankings came out this morning and the ACC had 2 teams in the Top 25 (FSU #6, Va Tech #13) and SBCC was ranked #16. So the Eagles have 3 Top 25 teams on thier schedule to start off. Lookiing at the way things are shaping up, they really need to get off to a 4-0 start or they may be missing their first bowl game in a long time.
BTW, WVU was ranked #24, the highest ranking of any BE team.

REally hard to say. He has had a very difficult time getting healhty, and missed his senior year in HS, and a good portion of last year.
When he did get on the field last year he looked slow, and that is slow on a BC receiving corp that was one of the slowest in college football. The injuries etc had left Phillips burried deep on the depth chart, basically he was going to be the #6 or #7 receiver this year, and 2-3 of the players in front of him were in the same class or even younger.
Obviously he had talent in HS, which drew BC and many other schools to him. Maybe taking a year off which he must this year will let him finally get healthy, and then he can maybe recapture. Biggest concern beyond the injuries, is there had been some talk that he is a kid who doesn't like contact.

That's alright. This team is pretty deep in the secondary.

Looks like Boston College football coach Frank Spaziani and athletic director Gene DeFilippo have taken a page from Bill Belichick’s book of motivation. DeFilippo arranged for country music superstar Kenny Chesney to speak to the Eagles during a team meeting this morning.
Chesney is in the area for concerts at Gillette Stadium the next two nights.
Spaziani assembled the team at 9:45 a.m. and played Chesney’s music video, “The Boys of Fall,” which chronicles the emotion involved with the game of football. At the conclusion of the video, Spaziani surprised the team by introducing Chesney, who received a standing ovation.
Chesney spoke to the team about the importance of personal sacrifice and sacrifice as a team in order to achieve goals. Spaziani presented Chesney with a Boston College football jersey and hat.

I'm going to Saturday's game with my daughter, a BC sophomore. Am I able to park on the Newton Campus and take a bus over to the game? I did that last year on parent's weekend when she lived on Newton, but didn't know if that was something that was done each game.
I don't believe you can park on Newton without a campus pass as I recall. One of the best options if you can get there early enough is actually to park at the Chestnut Hill MBTA lot and then walk to campus from there. You can also do Needham but that's a bit of a pain.

You can also park on the street that the chestnut hill mall is on, I can't think of the name of the street but I am sure one of the other guys can. They let cars park on the side of the streets on both sides all the way down to the mall and if you get there early enough it really isn't that bad of a walk. I don't know Lou, depends if Persa is out there, thinkin BC 21-17
I agree with the point on Persa. If he plays, I don't think this one will be a walk. Under Pat Fitzgerald, NWU is a well-coached team that will surprise some people given the experience on the roster and (especially) a healthy QB. If he were 100% post-achilles and the scrambling threat he was in the past, Persa would make this a very scary matchup. Fortunately, from a BC perspective, he's not and is unlikely to have that kind of mobility again, at least in the near term.
They're going to be good this year. Not saying they'll win the Big 10 or challenge for the BCS (obviously), but I expect they'll win 8+ games and get a decent bowl berth.
Edit:
And then there's this:
Persa OUT per Gameday
Nevermind.
BC by two touchdowns.

O line needs a lot of work. No push off the ball and useles inside the 10 yd line.
They really miss Harris. He scores on that run Williams had, he makes yaradage in spce that Williams can't.
Rettig will be a helluva QB, next season. He is still learning and has to learn to get rid of the ball. A lot of bad decisions out there. But he does have an arm and he has some receivers.
The D is not as good as I thought they would be. I know they lost a lot of guys but that D will get ripped by a speed eam and BC plays a lot of speed teams.
They not only looked bad overall, they didn't look prepared. They knew NW would run a spread option and they had their backup running. Yet they didn't defense it well and the O made too many mistakes. Witness the last series of the game. This wasn't Ohio State they were playing. It was a mid level Big 10 team.
Let's see how they respond next week in Orlando against a good UCF team. If they play like this again not only will it be a long game, it will be a long season. This is a game they needed and they just didn't get it done.
As for Spaz....he isn't a HC.

Other thoughts:
Eagleoutsider was high on Rettig - I thought he was mediocre, the game seemed a step too fast for him the whole time. Certainly wasn't Quinton Porter or Dave Shinskie-esque back there but he wasn't a positive out there, either. Again, just didn't think he saw the field very well.
OL was a joke - again, we debated this last year on the board. Sean Devine shouldn't have a job. He had no idea who the 5 linemen should have been last year, needing changes all over the place mid-season, and this season they were getting beaten by a defense that was terrible last season. F- effort.
Liked the Andre Williams of last year much better than this year - last year he just battered holes. This season, he was channeling his inner Horace Dodd and too much breakdancing for my like. Certainly not the reason they lost but he could have been better. Thought Tahj Kimble looked slow in pads.
Defense was winded all over the place - they were very unimpressive, McGovern did a nice job hiding ALJ in the second half because he was abused in the first - tackling was poor, and they looked slow all over the field to the point of impact.
I actually thought the team was slow in everything they did today - slow into the huddle, slow out of it, slow on defense getting ready for the snap. NW was crisp, ready to play on both sides of the ball. BC was in quicksand.
This could be a 4 win team, which frankly may be necessary to ensure the changes necessary to eliminate the disease that has infested the program.

this team today was totally out coached, unprepared, out of shape, one of the worst games since the Henning Halloween fiasco vs Pitt, that was on the take. Spaz may be a good guy but he is so far over his head its scary.. Flynn Fund lots were barely half full, Hey DBS people, how'd you like the seat cushions? about as much as the cushion on the field?
people are going to see the score 24-17 and think it was a good competive game, vs their 2nd string QB if PersaStrong had played he'd be making reservations for NY in Dec, we would have lost by 30, they ran no huddle all fucking day and Spaz didn't make one fucking adjustment
I heard the announced attendence was 37k, maybe, i was thinking 34ish, but consider that there was a good crowd from NW, they papered the house with $10 and free tickets, Groupon etc.. there used to be a small buzz in the area about a game, start of the season, right now BC football is about as important to the Boston area as Tufts, Bentley, Curry football That all falls on GDF's great fucking job
when he was hired to take over for Skates Monhan, my fear of Leahy was that, Coming from Marquete, he would let the football program fade to a 'Cross like' status. The ACC move made me think otherwise.. I'm deathly afraid that we are headed that way now, and GDF will not do anything to prevent it.
I know that I've hinted over the years that I work for one of the big sponsors of BC sports, and that is only because of our relationship as a big sponsor of the Sox/FSG, I could get tickets thru work but I acutally went to Conte last week and bought a season ticket because I love the school and deep down I love the program.. I FEEL LIKE THE BIGGEST FUCKING FOOL FOR DOING THAT
I went by a friends tailgate post game in a $5k lot with about 10 of the 25 or so spots filled, he said that c couple cars had come in after they'd left for kickoff so that was as full as it got. He is not renewing is seats, that have been in the family for years (DBS) or getting a space next year. Why when as he said 'if its a good game, he can eat and drink at a local joint, Roggies/Stockyard cab over and pick a ticket up from a scalper and still be way $$$$$$ ahead, makes perfect sense

BTW Spaz is now 15-16 v BCS and Top 25 opponents as a HC. His O scred 17 points Saturday, 1 pt more than they averaged lst yesr v BCS teams. Now Momah is done.
Is it possible to regress as quickly as the Eagles have? Did Matty Ice actually play here just 3 short years ago? Was this program actually ranked #2 in the nation just a few years ago? Did that actually happen?
