Is Joyce cost-controlled? I know he didn't sign an extension and this is the last year of his contract.

Family friend, Garret Smith got selected in the 20th round by the Rays. My sister is having dinner with the family to celebrate. Garrett played SS, Catcher and Pitcher for BC. Amazes me how a kid could play all those positions at the level of the ACC.

I wish him the best!

Damon tied a franchise record yesterday by reaching base in his 37th consecutive game, tying Ben Grieve's 2001 record. He's 0-for-2 tonight so far.

Is he in the twilight of his career yet?

So RIck, how about a down and dirty synopsis of the current state of affairs with the Rays as we head into this 3-game series. How is the revamped bullpen holding up the past two weeks, hot hitters and starters who are on a roll or not.

I know that Damon has his streak going and that Farnsworth blew the 10th last night, but what's your sense of who they are at this moment in the season.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the Sox gave to deal with the 3 best starters the Rays have had this year in Shields, Price and Hellickson. Davis has been up and down and the combo of Niemann/Sonnanstine was a disaster. The Rays are now going with rookie Alex Cobb as the 5th starter.

The pen has been a pleasant surprise given that they turned over the entire pen. Farnsworth has been a major shock as the closer which has allow Maddon to set up the rest of the pen. Joel Perlata and Juan Cruz have been the primary set-up men and they have been getting good pitching from Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos. JP Howell has been getting roughed since his return from the DL after missing all of 2010.

The offense can be hit or miss. Longoria has struggled this year especially after coming back from a strained oblique. Matt Joyce has been a needed surprise. The biggest problem is that this team does not walk a lot (11th in OBP and BB) and they are 11th in avg. This has gone through stretches where they have a hard time scoring runs.
