Just got an email from EEI about a big announcement at 5 o'clock. Seems like an internal thing, not a press conference.

Ordway says it has to do with the Big Show, and he'll be announcing it at 5:20.

Probably the date and location of the 2011 Whineys or something.

EDIT -- could Pete be returning?

This would be my guess. Makes zero sense that WAAF carries two FM signals. 97.7 WEEI. That's my guess.

Per The Herald: Dale & Holley replaced by Merloni & Mutnansky. Holley goes to the Big Show. Dale goes to fill-in duty.

Wow I was so off base. It would be too hard to just get a number on the FM dial, much easier to rearrange all the programming and bump Holley so he doesn't leave for TSH. Not.

Holley on right now ... they will be co-hosts, equals it seems pretty clear

other elements remain the same -- show's name, whiner line, etc

Hopefully, with Holley's addition, it means no more Butchy Stearns or Mike Adams filling in during Ordway's 18 weeks of vacation.

I was wondering if they'd finally be making the move to FM. I guess not. Congrats to Holley, Merloni and Munansky. And even bigger congrats to the Sports Hub for causing this change. Still doesn't mean I will be tuning in though! :P

Every day.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Dale precipitated this himself. The fact that he's not maintaining a full time role leads me to believe he was looking into retirement anyway. His new role sounds like semi-retirement to me.

They didn't say, but I think getting rid of the 3rd host would be a big mistake, the best part about the big show imo has been the ability to rotate and get the correct host in to talk about the topic of the day. I think 4 would be way too many voices trying to talk at once though

I'd guess its more like felger caused dale and holley to dissolve and they just don't really care about the midday show and would rather give merloni his own show than partner him up with ordway

VERY interesting. Jettisoning Dale Arnold is a bold and IMO great move. It will be interesting to see if my view of Holly as a guy with no strong opinon on anything was due to him being subjected to the human sleeping pill in Dale Arnold each day.

EEI with a counterpunch in what has become a one sided battle of late. Good for us.

I've been saying this for years. That, imo, would be the best duo in Boston radio history.

As it stands, I'm interested to see the new version of the Big Show. Holley was great a couple years ago but seemed to really have the life sucked out of him working with Arnold for so long. And as much as I hate to admit it, Ordway has been much better since he's been served his humble pie from Felger and Mazz. I hope this new duo works.

Shit - Edit! I was thinking you were talking about pairing Felger with Holley. Although listening to Flanders and Felger go at it every day would be funny too.

You keep saying that Holley as "no strong opinion on anything", which makes me wonder if you listen to any of the show or its interviews.

I guess "strong" is a tricky qualifier, but I've never found him to be meek. I'm not a massive fan of his or anything, but I think you're off.

Wow, great move IMO, the only question mark is Mutnansky. Lou is very good, logical, opinionated and has a great player perspective for baseball. Holley will improve the BigShow by just being there and keeping Ordway in line and focused.

While EEI has been attacked, they have done a decent job at responding to the competition. I wonder if TSH will make any changes in format/topics as a result?

Too bad for Arnold, he wasnt opinionated but I thought he was a decent host.

I was surprised to hear that Dale had the day off today, they must have broken the news yesterday to them (Holley wasn't in)...I'm not too big a fan of Merloni and Mut IMO is a weekend/fill-in

I will be really sad to D&H go...Dale Arnold has been fun to listen to since WEEI became all sports

The Mutnansky-Merloni pairing at noon is a really smart move heading into baseball season. They'll do extremely well, and I expect a more energetic and faster-paced show. I wonder if they're going to continue with The Baseball Show on weekends with those same two plus Bradford and McAdam?

While I always enjoyed the Holley-Arnold pairing, it was more for their demeanor, professionalism, and the way they handled both callers and topics. But they were often disjointed in conversation. Dale loves hockey and baseball, and Michael just doesn't know jack shit about either of them -- or at least he doesn't convey an adequate knowledge over the airwaves. Similarly, Holley runs circles around Dale on football and hoops. They were usually smart about deferring to each other, but the banter could sometimes seem one-sided and awkward.

I'm not sure how the Ordway-Holley Big Show will work out chemistry-wise. I hope it's a sign they're abandoning the sophomoric bullshit, and that the show will instead develop an edge. I'm sure they'll continue to have sport-specific guests -- more Max would be great, and McAdam's always a good fit in spring and summer. What they need to do most is revamp the football angle with a couple of new ex-Pats to replace the unbearable DeOssie and Smerlas. And please, enough of the "Irrelevant Boston Media Member" contingent -- specifically LJ, Sterns and Burt. You want to steal Lenny Megliola from Planet Mike? I guess I can live with that.

I'm not "off", its my opinion. I would listen for 30 or 40 minutes and finally change the station after yelling "what is your fucking POINT?" I also found him boring as hell, which is the biggest sin anyone in the entertainment industry can commit. Apparently EEI agrees with me because he's the odd man out here. (Paging Sparky Lyle to back me up on Arnold  )

Anyhoo, the biggest winners here are the listeners IMO. I think Merloni is a rising star and tightening up the Big Show has been LONG overdue. Competition is good for the Boston Market. I'm in intrigued by both the new mid day show and the revamped Big Show.

Are you talking about Dale or Holley?

Your first post he referenced you said Holley has no opinions, this response to him, the bolded part especially, seems to be about Dale.

If you're talking about Dale, I agree. If it's about Holley, I strongly disagree. He's my favorite host in town, certainly the most rational. I'd pay to have a real Mike & Mike show every day with Holley and Michael Smith.

Maybe Larry Ridley knew something was up?

What a weird move. I prefer D/H to Gresh/Zo but now won't listen to either station during that time. "Mut" is awful (tries way too hard) and I can't believe he is getting this shot. I will continue to avoid The Big Show and find the Holley pairing with the Large O to be bizarre/forced. The winner for me: my ipod and my Sirius/XM

Edit: Sorry Rocco, didn't see that you saw your mistake.

Rocco, I don't see your point, in no way is Holley the odd man out here he just got promoted. If you want to say Arnold has no opinion I'd tend to agree with you but I always enjoyed the pairing of Dale and Holley for the reasons Browndog pointed out.

I absolutely love this move and I like how even Ordway acknowledged that it was due to the competition and that it was time for a change. I really think having Holley there permanently will do great things for both the show and Ordway since he won't have to worry about losing his golden goose side gig like the other 3rd wheels. Plus it sounds like (and I'm guessing here) the rotating 3rd - 4th hosts have become "contributors" and won't be on every day for a whole show but more as guests for an hour like TSH does with Gasper and others.

As mentioned above, this only means good things for us as listeners, but the way Felger and Mazz are going I think I'll be tuning into the Big Show first and them second. Felger and Mazz were fucking horrible last baseball season, especially Mazz because you could tell he was carrying a grudge, being a BBWAA voting member I was really disappointed in how he came across all season.

More on their co-equal status, this from the Globe --

The show, which will be called "The Big Show with Glenn Ordway and Michael Holley," will drop its longtime rotating co-hosts format when it relaunches Feb. 28.

That's what happens, big fella, when you get fat and sassy and take all that vacation. Competition is healthy.

Holley slipping into drive time -- or the other station -- was inevitable. Now if they can just do something about the thugs in the morning...

They hinted at the changing 3rd chair with TC and Buck replacing each other today.

Also, did anyone catch the discussion of pets in hotels? Glennn stated some hotels would prefer 'dogs' to NBA players. Quickly caught himself and added, 'or Manny Ramirez'.

Wonder what Holley would have said in response.

I feel like all of these people who say they like Holley have never actually listened to him and just give him the benefit of the doubt because he's the only host on the station under the age of 55 and he seems like a nice guy. He is just as uninformed as the rest of them and he uses the same exact arguing techniques (including yelling, I've heard him yell at plenty of callers.)

I realize I'm in the minority though, and clearly this move shows it because EEI isn't stupid (as a business that is).
