That swing from McDowell was massively fucked up. He needs to get out of the way.

Golf shot from Toms.

Free golf!

That birdie by Toms was incredible. 3 birdie's all day on 18, then his perfect tee shot winds up in a divot. Hell of an approach shot and putt.

2 conservative shots to kick things off.

Also, I'm pretty sure if I had Choi's putt, it'd be terrified of putting it into the water and would wind up barely hitting the ball.

I love that they're basically intimating that Grahm McDowell is an alcoholic..........and chuckling about it. Funny stuff.

He's European though so it's okay. They haven't ruined functional alcoholism by taking all of the fun out of it like we have in America.

Tiger is still Seve Ballesteros's career away from passing Nicklaus. He's not going to get there. He needs Raymond Floyd's career to just tie Nicklaus. Nicklaus will still have the major title lead, plus the 17 second places in majors. How amazing was that guy. Somewhere in an old book I have a picture of a young Nicklaus, age 21 or something, absolutely crushing a drive. People forget just how strong and powerful that guy was when he was younger. Tree trunk legs and a huge butt. Apparently he routinely smashed the face plates of the drivers he used (which of course were persimmon with a little metal).

Brookline's own James Driscoll made himself about $130K today alone with what will likely be the low round of the day at the Nelson, 66 (-4). A chance to jump into the top 10.

Edit: He jumped 41 places today to T8, picking up $153K along the way. Average score was around 74.

There won't be at least five golfers favored over Kaymer in every major this year. In case you forgot, he fucking won one last year at the ripe old age of 25. He also finished in the top 7 in two other majors. Name one player who is better than Kaymer right now.

So, I'm in Vegas right now, and the book at Caesar's has 13 players favored over Kaymer at the US Open, and another half dozen listed at the same odds (22:1).

Low round ever for an amateur

Nineteen-year-old UCLA star Patrick Cantlay shot a course-record 10-under 60 - the lowest PGA Tour round ever by an amateur - to take a four-stroke lead Friday in the Travelers Championship.

3 pars to start things off for Tiger. A bit erratic, but that's too be expected. He just made a nice 20 footer to save par on 3.

He's made about 3 or 4 long putts to save par and missed a couple bunnies for birdie. Not a bad front 9, though.

Back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 now. The putt to save par on 9 seems to have kicked him into gear.

He looks pretty good. Fought his was through the front, but made all pars, so nothing too damaging.

Edit: 1 new change for Tiger is he's gone to the grandpa sneaker cleats.

Tiger finishes up with a 68. He was shaky off the tee, but everything else looked good. Seemed to have some trouble controlling the distance with his irons, but it wasn't too much of a problem. When he got into trouble, his short game looked good and he was able to avoid any ugly numbers.

If that was his first round back since basically the Masters, color me impressed. It obviously could have gone either way, he had to save par a lot, but the fact that it went in the right direction says a lot to me.

Not a great day for Tiger. He shoots a 71, and was all over the place. 4 birdies. 3 bogey's and a double. Inconsistency again, but that's to be expected after taking 3 months off from competitive golf. I'm not sure he'll be able to contend over the weekend, but you never know if he lights it up tomorrow.

I don't care about the message that this was the best week of his life (a clear slap at Tiger), but someone needs to tell this guy he didn't hit a fucking shot this week.

Holy crap he is. Scott wins, and in the post-round interview with CBS Stevie called this week the "best week of his life."

Pretty much golf's equivalent of "tell me how my ass tastes, Tiger."

Stevie's being kind of a douche here. Feherty just interviewed him and he goes "This is the greatest week of my life, no joke." I mean, good for him, but come on Stevie. People only know who you are because of Tiger Woods.

Anyway, Scott played great today and really ran away with this thing. He damn near jarred his approach on 18 to close it out. Random comment, but this feels like this is the first time someone using the broomstick putter has won a significant event.

Off to the Atlanta Athletic Club for the PGA Championship next week.

At Disney, Luke Donald is currently T1 in his quest to win the money title on both the PGA and European tours. He needs a T2 or better to do so.

But the more interesting story is the guy who he is currently tied with at the top. Brookline's James Driscoll began the tournament in the 125th spot on the money list, and the last spot for a full exemption and to avoid Q-school. Round 1 featured one eagle, 8 birdies, 2 bogeys, and a double, for a 66. This puts him in great shape to make the cut and secure his card for 2012.

I posted this in the Golf 2011 thread as well, but figured this thread was much more active.

I'm trying to establish a handicap for my teenage daughter. When I'm asked to put in the slope and rating of the course, it's usually a very straight-forward thing. Some rounds, however, she's playing from different tee boxes for each hole. For example, she qualified for states (NC) and played at Foxfire West on Monday and Tuesday. On a few holes, she played from the blue tees. On others, she played from the red tees. Other holes were from the white tees and the rest from the yellow tees. Is there anyway I can calculate the slope and rating for the entire round so I can input it to Golfshot (on my iPhone) or at a local course for handicapping purposes? I know that the total yardage was 5787 and I've got a list somewhere that tells me exactly which tees she played at each hole. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Well Stevie Williams, you've managed to make Tiger Woods look like the better half of a failed relationship. Lest not forget you were a caddy on the Senior Tour for Ray Floyd before Tiger put you on the bag for his next 60 wins. 60 WINS!! Pretty decent gig for a guy paid to part the crowd.

Keep talking, there may still be a few people who don't realize how big of an asshole you are. Wouldn't want them to walk around life confused.

It is no surprise Stevie Williams is making as ass of himself when given the chance to speak. He's been an ass for years and I'm glad it's starting to be officially realized. This has been quite an auspicious year for him, however. I would be surprised if Williams is carrying anyone's bag in 2012, this could come close to ending his career. Hopefully he saved the money that TIGER MADE FOR HIM.

What a colossal cock.

The President's Cup is just getting under way down in Melbourne. It's weird watching golf at night, but there should be some good golf on.

Anyway, the big story is Tiger is playing with Steve Stricker, and their first match is against.....yup....Adam Scott and KJ Choi. Tiger and Stevie back in the same group.

They showed the pre-match handshakes...tiger was about as cold as was humanly possible when shaking Williams' hand without punching him in the face. Which was the right thing to do. You could see Williams was a bit anxious waiting for it

i was going to ask...that course looks like a medicore public course on TV, but the grasses are different. Up close the greens looked great, but from the wide-angle the course looks awful. and the sand at the bottoms of the traps, what is that? not sure I've seen that before either

Snickers thankfully because he didn't have to play with Stricker yesterday? He was awful. And yeah, nobody was beating Choi and Scott. 4 birdies and no bogeys through 12 in alternate shot is just absurd.

The greens must be in good shape. They had them at 14 yesterday. They mentioned the traps weren't groomed either the sides or the bottom. I was dozing so I didn't quite hear it right. And there are a couple of drivable par 4s that might be a little exciting. But the 2 par 5s aren't anything special. No great match play holes. Didn't help that 4 of the 6 matches were not competitive. A nice comeback for Johnson/Kuchar. Down 3 after 11 and then down 2 with 2 to go. Highlight was Allenby hitting his drive 18 nice and fat and hit it about 200 yards.

Todays 4 ball matches have been moved up because of weather. Teeing off at 5:35 EST.

5:35
Watson/Simpson vs
Els/Ishikawa

5:49
Johnson/Woods vs
Baddeley/Day

6:03
Mickelson/Furyk vs
Scott/Kim

6:17
Haas/Watney vs
Ogilvy/Choi

6:31
Kuchar/Stricker vs
Yang/Allenby

6:45
