I've used this place before and for the price you can't beat it. Part of the process is selecting logos which have the same look and feel as the ones that you want. The link above are some of those examples.

The process will basically go that we get five options after we get the initial design. Once you pick one, you get unlimited revisions on it. So the only crapshoot really is that we really don't like any of them, normally a few of them will be pretty close to something decent. We'll never get something perfect, or something which pleases everyone, but whatever. It's better than the crap that is up there now!

Have you heard of or tried 99designs? Crowd sourcing of things like web page designs and graphics. My company has had some decent luck with them.

tried them.... horrible, horrible results. We got like ten crappy designs and then, similar to ebay sniping, at the last minute like every designer submitted some piece of shit which I could have done in 15 minutes. It filled our quota of 30 "submissions" but it was all unusable crap. Like seriously people submitted stuff which was just a standard font made into a graphic.

Small sample size and all :)

I like this one:

Swap out the round thing for a baseball (or an combination of all kinds of balls, sort of like a pie chart with baseball, basketball, soccer, etc), the OSLO for SoSH and under it either spell out Sons of Sam Horn or "Dedicated to all things Baseball/Sports/whatever" or whatever the tagline is. it would translate well to letterhead for when there are fundraising efforts, t shirts and coffee mugs for people who want to feel like they belong to something, and looks relatively professional.

Here's a half-assed attempt at rendering Orange Julia's suggestion. I'm not certain that the "dedicated...." works well and a better job with the text circling the ball is needed.

I think they could use some stylized type of lettering for SoSH. If you hold a baseball just right, you can get one of the seams looking like an S and not see the rest of the seam. That could be the first letter and small text OSH could make up the rest near the top of the seam. Something to imply motion for the last three letters might be an idea. I don't draw well enough to do it, though.

I like where you're going, Otto, but it is too busy. I think the baseball needs to not have words on it. I also think it wouldn't hurt to have a soxier font. Like Dirty Sox which is not EXACTLY the red sox logo, but pretty damn close.

The question is whether SoSH needs to be explained as Sons of Sam Horn. I can remove it easily enough but the font is a problem. I just chose what I had closest to your example. Find me a freeware version of an appropriate font and I can easily change that, too.

I would go with this, or the last one in the next post. This guy has a better swing. The other guy is kind of chopping down at the ball.

I like the concept of these two(with the quote bubble), but I think both(and all the ones Nip had above) are way to blue. It is a RED Sox discussion site.

It's kinda shame you can't make the S's out of Sox or something.

Also think this is the best one to work with, but agree with the criticisms. If it can be done with a Sox themed font it will probably look better. Also, instead of using a baseball clip-art for the "o" perhaps just add stitches to the normal font's "o."

Can you try doing the baseball inside the bubble but have the laces be more horizontal, showing the "autograph sweet spot" and have the SoSH there as if it were a ball signed by SoSH?

I'm somewhat against using a baseball or the red Sox font anywhere. The reason? Check every other Sox site and that's what you'll find. Secondly, who gives a crap? If you read the site for a few moments you'll know what it is. It's not like WalMart has a picture of white trash shopping for Chinese-made items under the name or anything.

It kind of feels rookie to me. Like Maalox's mother's blow jobs

Honestly, I'd go simple. Drop the stupid baseball-O from the word-bubble "SoSH" one and see where that gets you.

It really depends on the font. You could put two complimentary fonts together and it would look pretty great. But I dig fonts so /shrug.

Examples: http://www.webdesign...erlapping-text/

http://www.thedesigncubicle.com/

I'll keep searching out an article that shows a bunch of great examples as well.

Just my two cents on these initial concepts...

This one has a style/dynamic the others seem lacking, without getting complicated. Perhaps look for a font or fonts that better complement the style of the batter. I'm not sure the tag line lends much in this iteration, almost like it was stuck on after the fact.

IMO: The word bubble seems flat and I don't know that a font change will fix that.

I think this is the best - simple and clean, though I agree about both the baseball (what about a big mouth, it's more in character) and the font.

As a second choice the swinging silhouette is good, but he's wearing a little-league style two-eared batting helmet...so, y'know, he's a puss (again, might be in character for us).

Yeah, I think I'm coming around to this one if it drops the tag line. If that logo is used on letterhead and whatnot, the tag line takes away from the simplicity of the graphic. This logo definitely has a more professional feel for those uses vs. the chat bubble. For the site, the logo could always be the focus of the header bar with the tag line written in to the side or below it like it is now.

Nip, I understand if you want to avoid Sox-style font. However, are there any other ideas to make the batter silhouette feel more original? It would be great if we could find a way to convey that it's a Sox discussion site (or at least Sox/Boston sports related) without having to write it out. Someone receiving the silhouette on letterhead could think it's a baseball equipment company, or high school baseball clinics, etc. The sleekness of the silhouette is great; it would be better, though, if we could make it less generic.

He's also a contortionist, since the arc depicts his swing going behind his back. Shades of Linda Blair in 1973.

Ok, so I saw this topic and decided to play a bit on photoshop. I am not good at drawing pics, but I think I ve got a good handle on color theory. So the first thing I noticed is that the blue background is a too light for the red bars. Regardless of the color combination you pick, their tone should match each other. So I took the Red Sox blue and changed the bar colors to a darker hue of red and blue. Then I played with various fonts to see if something would catch my eye.

Posted Image

Then I wasn't fully satisfied with the font so I decided to play a bit more. I also thought that "Dedicated to Discussion of all things Red Sox" was a bit wordy and inaccurate. This site has ended up being about more than simply the sox. And its distinctive point of pride is that it aims towards intelligent discussion. So how about changing the motto to something snappier? So I did this:

Posted Image

Hmm. Perhaps, this isn't clear enough. So let's add a word, make the logo larger while toying with the effects. The "not only part" still might be not good enough as it may lead something to think "not only intelligent discussion". Which is true on some occasion. But I do like that it's a bit mysterious and it covers things like other Boston teams and the P&G stuff.

Posted Image

Ok, I think that's passable. And how about experimenting with some white outline to make it a bit more Soxy?

Posted Image

So that's it. I ve only worked on it for a couple of hours. If this was a business project, I would spend days upon days poring over every little detail, so I don't feel like it's the best I could do or the best it can be. If people like it, I can work on it a little bit more.

Regardless, if I were to make a contribution to this discussion is that the colors should match each other better and the motto should reflect Sosh' new reality.
