Box score of the week – Bronson Arroyo – 1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3 HR.

So who was the last pitcher to give up 3 HRs while getting no more than 3 outs? That would be Arroyo of course, on June 24, 2008.

Arroyo is "leading" the NL in homers – he has given up 40 so far (Pujols has only hit 34)....

I suspect if he was still pitching in the AL East, that number would be closer to 50 or 60 HR allowed. I wonder what the regular season record is in that category?

That means he's got a shot at Lima's NL record of 48, assuming he gets 3 more starts. He has made more starts for the Reds than anyone else this year (29) and has managed to not give up a tater in only 8 of those games amazingly. The recent game was the 4th time this season he gave up 3 HR, and he also gave up 4 in one game.

I ran one of those BAC calculators (i know, but it's just an estimate) and if he was drinking for three hours straight he'd need about nine beers and nine shots to get that 'high'. BEFORE you pick up your daughter. I don't really see any other explanation other than 'I was drinking all day.'

Well, he gave up a magnificent 4 home runs last night (the game that eliminated them from postseason contention officially), so he's at 44, and slated to start 2 more game.

Kotchman met in California with the doctor who performed his laser eye surgery in 2004. He underwent four treatments to loosen his tear glands.“They extracted them out of my lower eyelids,” Kotchman said, “so it was almost like popping a pimple.”

The procedure was painful — and, considering the gunk that oozed from his eyelids, a bit gross. But it cleared Kotchman’s vision, and he signed a minor league deal with his hometown Rays, who had lost first baseman Carlos Pena to free agency.

Kotchman played one game in the minors and was summoned to Tampa Bay when Manny Ramirez retired. He has stayed ever since, an unlikely contributor to an unexpected contender.

Congrats to Mike Lowell (1994 Chatham A's) and Eric Wedge (1988 Y-D Red Sox) on being selected for the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame. They'll be formally inducted November 19 at the Monomoy Theater in Chatham.

Ex-MLB player settles insider charges

A former Major League Baseball infielder who played briefly for the Red Sox has settled allegations that he committed insider trading, regulators said.

Jeffrey S. Richardson, who played three seasons in the majors, including 15 games with the Sox, allegedly bought stock in Genesis Energy LP, of Houston, in 2007 after learning from an inside source that the company was on the verge of acquiring several energy-related firms.

He tipped off two family members and a friend about the deal, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged.

The SEC charged Richardson with insider trading, accusing him and his associates of collectively making a profit of $88,026. To settle the allegations, Richardson agreed to give up the profits, plus $21,534 in interest, and pay a civil penalty of $88,026. The settlement is subject to court approval.

Richardson, 46, played with the Cincinnati Reds in 1989, the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1991, and the Sox in 1993, according to Baseball-almanac.com.

He had a .176 career batting average and batted just .208 in 24 at-bats with the Sox. He lives in Grand Island, Neb.

Richardson told the Omaha World-Herald it was cheaper to settle the case than to contest it.

“We don’t feel like we did anything wrong,’’ he told the paper.

The Nationals have agreed on a Minor League deal with outfielder Mike Cameron. Manager Davey Johnson said that he is looking for power off the bench and Cameron, who will turn 39 on Jan. 8, could be one of his answers. Besides coming off the bench, Cameron could platoon with Roger Bernadina in center field.

This season, Cameron played for the Red Sox and Marlins and hit a combined .203, with nine home runs and 27 RBIs. He is best remembered for being traded from the Reds to the Mariners as part of the deal that sent Ken Griffey Jr. to Cincinnati after the 1999 season.

According to reports, Richardson, 28, tested positive for a whole list of things: amphetamine, Letrozole and metabolite, Methandienone metabolite, Methenelone and metabolite, and Trenbolone and metabolite. Wow, now that's a violation I've ever seen one. Only if he's signed by a major league team, Richardson will be able to serve his 50-game suspension immediately.

If memory serves, they agreed at the time his contract was signed that the Sox would offer arb, and he would turn it down. Except the new CBA did not garner a pick for him anyway. He may very well have been ruing that agreement from the time the new CBA went into effect.

edit - the absence of the supplemental pick is new as a result of the ml level deal. The lack of a compensatory pick is a result of his low FA rating and the new CBA. And wrt his feelings upon leaving, from a secondarily linked article off your first:

"Boston, I feel like, is still an option," he said. "I'll definitely keep that in mind. I hope they do make a phone call on my behalf and see where we're at."

Yeah, no shit. MDC was a hometown kid with a tremendous attitude who took a prominent role in local charitable causes and community leadership in spite of his youth. Combine this with his performance and there's absolutely no grounds whatsoever to bitch about him. I'm 100% certain that while the Sox FO projected a higher ceiling for him, not a single scout or exec past or present is thinking the team didn't get far more than their money's worth or that he "caused any trouble."
