Beckett, Lackey, Dicek.

I want to feel good about one of those three by the end of the season. Just one.

After the game on August 1st, the Orioles were in last place in the AL East, 41 games below .500 and 34.5 games out of the lead. Today, they are still 31 games out but since the advent of Buck Showalter as manager there has been a turn-around. Baltimore has the best record in the AL East and the second best record (behind Minnesota) since he took over on August 3rd. They have also allowed the fewest runs in the AL East since then.

Showalter Era
BAL 27-17 ----
TBR 24-20 -3.0
NYY 24-21 -3.5
BOS 23-21 -4.0
TOR 21-23 -6.0

And since September 1, they're 10-7 while we're 9-8. So, it should be a decent matchup. But I'd say we have the edge, since my double-secret sources tell me the birds are wearing their new unis tonight.

Spoiler

Edit: pronoun agreement, or lack thereof (doh!)

My turn to be confused. Who's playing where tonight? Maybe the game is actually in Tupelo, homey?

No, Rembrat's stolen Foulkey avatar shtick, I thought we were supposed to root for the Rays because we still have 6 vs. NYY and the Rays have the easy schedule and they're only a half game apart?

Sorry, my mistake. I meant to say that the Red Sox will do the Moondance on the Baltimore Orioles. No need to step lightly.

Another possible answer to the thread title, assuming Van rather than Clint is what abs had in mind:

The Yankees can and would pitch CC on short rest if their season were in jeopardy.

Hey, the Rays could lose all their remaining games! It could happen! /adjusts tinfoil cap

I'm not giving up on the Sox yet, since they aren't counted out yet, but I am past the point of letting the Sox chances dictate my rooting interest in non-Sox games, so go Rays. Sweep the season, and sweep the post-season, barring the Sox showing up there. I'm for the champ coming from the AL East and not being the Yankees.

Once again the Zombie makes an appearance in the line up. This time as DH. This bodes well once again.

Living in Baltimore, I have little choice but to watch the O's. And they aren't so bad anymore. This series will be a challenge for the Sox.

#25 Kevin Jewkilis

Youkilis is going to lose some grey ink this week. Under the "hitters that don't have enough PA's to qualify can get extra hitless PA's added to their lines for the purposes of the batting title" rule, as of before tonight's game, Youkilis is hitting 285/388/525, good enough for 8th in OBP and slugging and 7th in OPS. After tonight's game, he'll be down to 283/385/520. Jose Bautista should knock him off the OBP leaderboard tonight or tomorrow. He's on pace to fall off the slugging leaderboard on Friday or Saturday, and the OPS board Sunday or Monday. (Of course, depending on what the other hitters do it could be a couple days sooner or later.) It's amazing to think that he could potentially still be in line for the 10th best OPS in the league despite a mandated 0-45.5 streak to end the season.

The last two pitches to Lowell were the first swinging strikes of the game, I think.

One would think that 38 pitches would result in more than one run.

EDIT--38 pitches....an omen?

Looks like they have 9 guys on the 60 day DL, but it's not quite as an impressive group as ours. http://mlb.mlb.com/t...an.jsp?c_id=oak
