The rebirth of Ortiz is one of the truly amazing developments of the past couple of years for the Sox. There was a lot of talk about actually releasing him early in the year. But instead, he's become Big Papi again.

Well, he is tonight. But that 570 OPS close and late and 572 OPS against LHP'er suggest that he is not as Big as he was. Still, with the strike zone we have seen this year in the year of the pitcher, it's been a pretty good year, and he is still the best DH out there, even if he is prone to slow starts now.

Fungible young LHB corner outfielder 2 drives in fungible young LHB corner outfielder 1.

The one advantage of Kevin Cash is that he screws up reporters twittering about trades.

With (can you believe it) two stolen bases this inning, we are no longer tied for last in stolen bases and even leapfrogged the Cubs to land in 27th place in the majors.

Fungible young LHB corner outfielder 2 drives in fungible young LHB corner outfielder 1.

Fungible young LHB corner outfielder 1 is becoming less fungible by the start.

I put the over/under for the number of batters the Pap man faces at 6 1/2. Pitches at 24 1/2.

And I'll say OVER on both.

Short looping fliner into CF to score Kalish. BABIP loves our young pale left-handed outfielders.

Is Gameday still crapping out or was Paps boned during that at bat?

Who'd you sacrifice?

No Paps, you don't get a save if you produce the save situation. You just suck.

Kalish does look like a keeper. He has shown a little power, a good arm, reasonable flycatching (even in CF), and decent plate discipline. His LD% and O-Swing% both look like he deserves a longer look.

It depends how trading counterparts value Reddick and Kalish. At this point, I'd be happier giving up Reddick, but I'm not so sure opposing GMs would be happier getting him.

Compared to earlier this year and last year, Paps is using his breaking pitches a lot more, often to good effect.

I think Paps turned the corner with his splitter some time in July, and it has been a legitimate #2 pitch since then. It has better slumping action and deception.

And that's dirty water, Pacific Northwest style.

Kalish would be preferable for opposing GMs, but Reddick should still have value, especially for NL GMs. If Melky Cabrera has trade value then Josh Reddick certainly does.

So the splitter slumping stopped Papelbon slumping?

Kalish is probably the only that has enough value to be worth trading though. All of the should start in Pawtucket next year to get sorted out.

Jed's two HR night bumps him up to an awfully nice looking .847 OPS, not to mention getting starts at SS. Flashing some power, a 1/1 k/bb ratio and adequate defense. If he can keep it up for two more weeks, we're looking at about 200 PA of consistency.

144 PAs for Ellsbury in 2007.

I do think Lowrie's performance is a bit more meaningful as it isn't so out of line with what he had done before.

Maybe this was mentioned earlier, but I just learned from the M's post-game show that Beltre just broke the team record for XBHs by a third baseman. Way to go, AB.
