ESPN reviewed state/local health department inspection reports at every NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL stadium & arena in the US and Canada -- 107 in all. They found 28% of them had "critical" violations. None of this really surprises me, given the paucity of inspectors, the lack of serious teeth in any of the regulations, and the cavalcade of fucking scumbags involved in the mass merchandising of prepared foods in North America. And it's really no different than I'd expect to find at a cross-section of high-volume restaurants. But it's disconcerting nonetheless.

They've included an interactive map with full reports on each facility. The New England entries:

Gillette Stadium - One of just 11 facilities to turn up no violations whatsoever. Considering two of the others are new stadiums for which no inspections have been performed, while three others were Chicago stadiums inspected on dates when no games were taking place and no food was being prepared, the Kraft family unsurprisingly comes off running one of the tightest ships in pro sports.

Fenway Park - 4% of vendors were found to be in violation. Inspectors found raw steak that had warmed to almost 60 degrees, which was above safe temperatures. Considering the antiquated structure and the decades of filth and stench that existed before JWH and crew took over the club, I'm both surprised and impressed.

TD Garden - 21% of vendors were in violation. Storing dishwashing chemicals on top of an ice machine resulted in a critical violation for one location.

Eight facilities had violations from 75% or more of its vendors, seven of them in Florida. The Verizon Center in Washington DC and Tropicana Field were the only stadiums where violations were found at 100% of vendors. At Tropicana, every single vendor was cited for at least one critical violation.

Tangentially related, my friend made a site that shows the health scores for all restaurants in SF on a Google map, which is pretty damn cool. sfscores.com.

LOL
Wrigley, US Cell, United Center:
"No critical or major violations. Chicago health inspectors inspect vendors while the stadiums are empty, when no workers are preparing or serving food."

That's one way to do it...
