Not a 'sexy' match-up but you never know when a classic may break out.

Pretty ho-hum match so far. Let's hope Paraguay prevails, as they seem a much better bet to give Spain or Portugal a run in the next round.

Lack of action in this thread mirrors lack of action on the pitch. This is pretty poor football. Neither team will give ESP/POR much of a test at this rate.

seems to be the mirror opposite of yesterdays slovakia/nl match. Today featuring a frenzied pace with very little dominant possesion by either team resulting in few quality chances vs. yesterdays' death cage match of patience and pressure in the 18-yd box

Things have picked up a bit in the past 5 minutes or so, at least.

Japanese keeper dives over his own defender, injures him. Out come the stretchers.

This game is just a smattering of occasional runs. Things are picking up, and Paraguay starting to control possession.

#5 Nagatomo gets a little too handsy, gets a yellow card, misses next match. Seemed like a tough call in a match where the ref is really letting 'em play.

i have thought several times that the ref doesn't seem in control here. the yellow didn't seem warranted

And then he lets some fouls go by. Very inconsistent.

true. yet this has to have been a tough match to call. just a ton of kickball type play covering a ton of ground and neither team stepping up to establish a rhythm for a baseline of match play.

Tired and looking like they will have to play another 30 minutes after regulation is over. Overtime might be a lot of kicking up and down without too much excitement.

With maybe some slowly rolling PKs to finish the game off.

at this point it would be not all that surprising to see the exhaustion leading to a mental mistake kind of goal. not a lot of creativity here.

This ref either does a Tim McClelland-esque job of waiting 5 seconds before giving the call, or he's being influenced to make free-kick calls by complaining players.

Step 1: miss a header as you jump in the air for it, with nobody around you
Step 2: Have it hit the lower part of your shoulder, which might, anatomically, be arguably part of your arm
Step 3: Ball bounces to an opponent
Step 4: Ref blows whistle, gives you a yellow card

Another rough day at the office for Mr. Honda.

Looks like another ref has failed to make his way to the Quarters. (we can hope)

I noticed that for every tiny call or opposing free kick early in the game, there were a swarm of paraguayan players either questioning the ref or delaying him from setting down the ball so japan could take the kick. I think that set the tone for calls early, and also, in my opinion is definitive of the Paraguayan mindset here. ungentlemanly.

Japan almost pulled it off right there, two great chances.

And Honda just was declared ITV Man of the Match. Presumably for the quasi-handball, since he hasn't done squadoosh else.

final whistle blows, and every single player on the pitch doubles over, hands on their knees, gasping for breath. some lay down on the field.

well, that was exciting. time for a shootout.

I think in every single game the ITV viewers have voted for the most famous people on the pitch, or who scores the goals.

I would have voted for the ref. He was the busiest guy out there and did the most damage to the opposing team.

All I can add is that Oscar Cardozo is roughly a 60-70% penalty taker under regular circumstances. Reminds me greatly of Martin Palermo.

Apparently everyone in the world logged onto ATDHE.NET when the PKs started, and all my feeds crapped out. So I get to see the aftermath but not the shoot out. Fark it, I'm going to a bar for the afternoon match.

I feel badly for the guy, but he hit it too hard. The goalies were jumping away from the ball most of the shots, which were buried close to the center of the goal. A fitting end to a not very good game.
