Winner isn't even guaranteed to miss Spain in the next round so we won't get full effort today.

Well, they've got 1 already.
N.Korea should not be in this tournament. What a joke that Ireland is home today.

Yes, he has.
Man, it's a yellow card parade. Even though it's a meaningless match, these guys are beating the fuck out of each other.

I know this is a game thread, but, assuming SydneySox was joking, this is the dumbest thing I've read in three weeks. Ireland was not able to score 2 goals in 210 minutes against a France side that has been a smoking crater for three years.
If anything, this world cup showed that Europe should have at least 2 spots (maybe 4) taken away from them and given to South America and Asia.

SydneySox wanted the Irish to be there so the Australians could talk to each other in Scottish.

And this is even worse.
Ireland's FIFA rank = 41
N.Korea's FIFA rank = 105

Doesn't the winner of this group fall to the US side of the bracket?
#34
Posted 25 June 2010 - 10:28 AM
Correct. The loser moves to the bracket with England, Germany, Argentina, AND plays the winner of Spain v. Chile.
This game is not meaningless.

Same side but they wouldn't meet until the semifinals.

Yeah, so you'd expect a push by Portugal sooner or later.
#37
Posted 25 June 2010 - 10:32 AM
Yeah, I know that. For all the same reasons we like the US draw, you'd have to think one of these teams would prefer being on that side as well.

3 spots below Honduras. 15 spots below Israel. If we were to determine the world cup solely by FIFA rankings Ireland still wouldn't make it.
Ireland has gotten a lot of mileage over a handball, but, even in that case, they were playing for penalties, so it's not as if victory was snatched from their grasp.

Okay, but my point was that Ireland is miles ahead of N.Korea who have proven for sure that they don't belong anywhere near this stage. Every game they played was a total waste of our time.

It's far from clear how the late group will play out, and the potential quarterfinal opponent is decidedly tougher for Brazil now (Netherlands) than Portugal (winner of Paraguay/Japan).
If you look all the way out to the semis, that's when Portugal's side becomes tougher, but that seems kind of silly.

Ecuador is the one with a complaint, finishing sixth in South America when the first five may all win their groups (four have so far, Chile is pending).

FIFA is ready to listen to your suggestions. Unless Henry played for the communist North, I say kudos for Phil Plantier for pointing out the eternal dumbness of this post.

Obviously, you hate underdogs or Cinderella stories. By the same idiotic logic, Ireland, Japan, Korea should all not be in the tourney and let the FIFA rankings decide who competes in the top 32.
ifmanis5, I never noticed anything but positive things about your posts but this one should be put to bed.
Edit. One more thing - FIFA rankings also reflect the number of international matches a country plays, as each win/draw is multiplied by various factors like importance of game, region, opposing team's rankings, etc. NK rarely plays friendlies, and that severely hampers their position. China may be ahead of NK right now in terms of quality but they failed to qualify - NK deserves to be in the tournament and played with a lot of heart, even if they were too short on skills.
And I would venture NK would have no problem playing Irish to a draw in at least half of the matches as they can't score shit, and even stealing a win now and then.

Is that so? Playing to a 2-1 to Brazil, surely a terrible 0-7 against Portugal (but there are reports the team didn't even fucking field rain cleats and were sliding all over the place in the 2nd half), then a 0-3 loss to the highly ranked CIV.
Are they possibly the worst team in the tourney? Possibly, but it's only a waste of time for lol-boo-hoo Irish rooters who's picking on the wrong team to continue to vent at the handball.
By the way, this same NK team played very, very well against the now respectable AFC with a 3-3-2 record in the WC qualifier, and beating out the Arab teams that literally pours tens of millions of $$$ into their teams.
I understand no one knew about this team before the WC unless you're into Asian football all season long, but you're really barking up the wrong tree.

If that's what you read, move on. Irish deserved to be in the tourney, but that has NOTHING to do with NK not deserving to be here. They qualified through a very competitive AFC qualifying round, and the FIFA ranking has nothing to do with it.
