Buffon out again for Italia. With all the English and French problems, the Italians have escaped the horns of the general fan but they have been mediocre at best so far. Lots of lineup changes today and still no Pirlo.

You know, you could do a lot worse then a Gattuso-De Rossi center midfield.

Would like to see what the Hamsik hype is all about. Didn't get to see much of Napoli this year and he's underwhelmed so far.

Howard Webb hands out 10 red cards. Which is always possible.

I think...

If NZ win, they advance.

If NZ draw, they advance if Italy also draw while scoring fewer goals.

If NZ draw, they advance it Italy draw while scoring the same number of goals, if they win the coin toss.

I think that's right--it's not that NZ have complicated scenarios or need help in other games, it's that nobody can see them digging out another result.

If scores hold, it's Paraguay and Slovakia through at 1 and 2 respectively, correct?

If the ITA-SVK score holds and New Zealand scores a goal, they will win the group.

For NZ to advance? I don't think so, but I certainly could have missed something. If either Italy or Slovakia win, NZ needs to win to advance.

I don't think so, because if Italy loses, Slovakia wins and advances, which means Nz has to win.

Nope, you're right. I was misremembering NZ-SVK as a win. (They just celebrated as if it was.)

Just meant first knockout round. I'd rather have NZ than Ghana. After that, yeah, we might have the best option until we run headlong into Brazil.

Winner of the worst suit at the World Cup goes to the gaudy, broad pinstriped number worn by the Slovakian coach today. It looks like he bought it as a part of the Sopranos costume liquidation sale.

Just because it's fun to speculate, there's potential that 1/4 of the final 16 draw could be:

Paraguay vs. Japan and Switzerland vs. Ivory Coast. More likely, it's Paraguay vs. Japan/Denmark and Chile vs. Portugal, but that's still child's play compared to England, Germany, Argentina and Mexico. Then again, what isn't?

Stock really should have scored there. Amazing that he was given so much space 20 yards out. They were inviting him to shoot into any corner.

Anyone watching the NZL game? Are they going for it or are they happy with the draw (which would be an impressive, if relatively empty, achievement)?

Neither team really appears to be falling over themselves to score a goal. It's probably going to end up 0-0.

Someone should interview Rossi if Italy doesn't advance, and ask how it feels to not make the WC team for Italy and they get bounced, when he was probably a lock for the advancing US team.

Not that it's realistic, but it would be sweet if Slovakia could take down the Netherlands and Brazil and we could get a good ole USA-Slovakia semi-final.
