Of all the national anthems I have heard tonight, North Korea's is the worst.

So basically Portugal has to run up goals in case they lose against Brazil and it's goal differential with them and Ivory Coast right?

North Korea have made a couple mistakes in front of the goal, but they are handling the dump-and-run very well so far.

Two Portugese fouls on successive plays inch PRK closer to another scoring chance. Had this game been at the higher-altitude stadiums in the North, this free kick could have been a long shot on goal for PRK. But they come away empty-handed.

Ronaldo just got bumped off the ball so he naturally ran into the next guy he sees and then falls down. Luckily, the refs either didn't see it or didn't fall for it.

Portugal has to get 2 or 3 more in the 2nd half.....just winning this game 1-0 or 2-0 or god forbid conceding a goal would make getting through very tricky

Portugal looking very strong right now. No reason they can't get 2 or 3 more.

I'd feel a lot better if Ivory Coast hadn't gotten that late one against Brazil, but this is positive and Coentrao has now played 2 fantastic games at LB. Almeida feels more effective as a striker, as well, so credit to Quieroz for making a positive change there. I can't speak too highly of Simao because i've learned to hate his ability to get in dangerous spots and then fail, even that goal was something out of his typical playbook.

Edit: Would be nice if Ronaldo could bust out of his slump. He's setting up people left and right, though.

i think humiliating a totalitarian police state is always a good thing, as will be taken as a humiliation of the Great Leader himself. love that this is the first game they've televised live and their fans get exposed to the smallest slice of reality -- better than nothing.

No shit - Portugal can do whatever they want, you can't fall for keep playing ball no matter what the score is. And PRK completely lost spirit after the 3rd goal and let a few dumb ones go in.

But still, I am looking forward to Portugal fall in the upcoming rounds against teams not ranked last in the tourney.

P.S. Yup - felt terrible for the players. They worked their asses off - against pressure none of us will really understand. But still, kudos for making it to the big stage, against all the oil-rich UAB, Saudis and the despicable Chinese team that literally put tens of million $ into their team.

There is no way Portugal should let up in that game. They're essentially tied with Ivory Coast who still has to play N. Korea while Portugal draws Brazil. There's an incredibly high likelihood this comes down to GD. They would be entirely right to score 9 or 10 if they could. Ivory Coast could score 5 against N. Korea and a Brazil 3-0 win would be surprising but isn't out of the question. Portugal has to score every goal possible in that game to give themselves as much breathing room versus Brazil as possible. This is the World Cup, are we really worried about the mental states of these athletes to the point that Portugal should stop trying to preserve their egos?

Agree. It's not Portugal's job to stop pushing the ball. It's PRK's job to not suck up. At the same time, I'd be rooting for Brazil and CIV all the way the rest of the tourney.

And they are not done yet. They've got a game to redeem themselves.

You'd know more about this than I do, but I'm not sure getting the shit kicked out of them is such a PR disaster. What matters is what they do in the next game. I think North Koreans know that they are going to take some serious shots in the World Cup and on the world political stage. That's been happening for 60 years. But I should think a canny dictator wouldn't mind reminding them of that - it softens them for the kind of suffering that keeps him in power. And if they come back fighting and tie or maybe beat somebody, it sends the message, "life sucks. Take your lumps and treasure the small victories. Someday the big ones will come."

As a capitalist Westerner, I find that PRK's status as a rogue state makes them so much more interesting to watch. Their style of soccer, if it came from France or someplace, would not be that exciting. But there is a weird, almost kinky appeal to seeing the communist ethic redeemed in little ways.

With an appearance by Red!

Anybody think this ends less than 10 v 10? A bit light for a red.

A bit? That was ridiculous. That was almost a bigger flop than the one that got Kaka sent off last night. And this was a direct red. A yellow would have been plenty.

This guy is calling this very tight.

I'd imagine some/most/maybe all of these players/coaches spend years gearing toward the WC. Once it arrives, it's just go time. 1-0, 3-0, 7-0, 10-0, whatever. Now isn't the time to back off.
The fact the rout came at the expense of North Korea, all the better.

I wish I wasnt having to agree with this statement but the refereeing is this world cup is looking overmatched and much more like they want to be the stars of the game.

This CHIvSUI game is going to get out of control fairly quickly even after the recent spate of yellows issued.

Nice dive by the SUI player to draw another yellow though

Chile will still need to draw Spain to advance if the Swiss and the Spanish both beat Honduras by two goals or more. Not getting more goals against Honduras could really come back to haunt them. It would be a shame if this Chile team didn't at least make the round of 16.

And they gave away 3 or 4 golden opportunities in this one. They're really lucky the Swiss missed their chance at around 45'.

But the big story here is 9 yellows and 1 red. This ref deserves repeated kicks in the nuts.

Yup, that was ridiculous.

I think Chile are going to be without two starting midfielders (Carmona and Fernandez) against Spain due to each having received two yellows.

will be a shame if Chile don't make it -- they're skilled and fun to watch. Tough to have 2 wins and not necessarily in great shape. On the other hand, not like Switzerland has a ton of firepower, so no given they'll outscore Honduras.
