It's better to get Old Trafford out of the way in August while Man Utd are still getting their sea legs. It worked out well enough two years ago, as I recall.

The season didn't work out too well, though. laugh.gif

I see us really struggling because it seems Hughton and Ashley are intent on not spending a penny in the market. We've got good defenders but we're going to be eaten alive in the middle of the park.

Andy Carroll on the verge of signing a new deal

http://www.teamtalk....f-new-Toon-deal

QUOTE
The new contract is expected to net the England Under-21 striker just over £1million a year.

Carroll told the Daily Star Sunday: "This is where I'm from and Newcastle are the only team for me."

We've signed James Perch. Looked decent against us when Forest came to play at St James' towards the end of the season, but the Forest fans seem united in thinking that he's a total liability. I'm underwhelmed but at least it's another body in a position that we needed cover.

Depth signing. Certainly not a splash in the transfer market, but can play both in the midfield and across the back. This is a pretty thin roster by EPL standards, so every body helps.

EDIT: Here's a fairly favorable writeup.

EDIT2: Lee Ryder also approves.

Link for the Ben Arfa deal? As far as I can find, Marseille and NUFC are still haggling over the terms of the loan. That being said, I'd really like to see this kid in black and white, especially considering the degenerate Mackems stole Welbeck right from under the Toon's nose.

Ben Arfa would be a fantastic signing. He is versatile, a bit like a younger David Silva. He can play on the wing and in the middle as the creative force in a 3 man midfield.

Good deal for NUFC if true.

I feel optimistic about this season. Hughton's a good coach and man manager. The players like him and like playing for him. Expectations are not high. Mid table will be sufficient.

Which, bearing in mind Newcastle's historic lack of success, is a perfectly acceptable position.

Teams that have won a major honour since Newcastle last won one -

Norwich City
Luton Town
Oxford United
Wimbledon (MK Dons)
Ipswich
Portsmouth
Manchester City
Stoke City
Wolves
Sheffield Wednesday
Leicester City
Swindon Town

IMO, a perfectly acceptable position for this season is anywhere other than the bottom three- and I think it's going to be a dogfight to stay out of the relegation zone this year. I'd be absolutely ecstatic if they finished mid- table.

Actually upon reflection mid table will feel like finishing in the Top Four.

According to goal.com, Newcastle and Marseille have agreed to the terms of a loan on Ben Arfa (Goal.com article) and NUFC and Ben Arfa are now having wage discussions. I've been obsessing over this Ben Arfa move for a couple of weeks now. Hopefully Hughton can get him on the same page with the rest of the team. If so, our chances of stay up will increase dramatically. I would definitely like to see at least one more signing on the defensive side of things, but I think Hughton's done a good job with the limited budget so far.

Ben Arfa's off with the French squad for their friendly so that's the reason this deal hasn't been concluded.

Though there's been some rumours about Werder Bremen swooping in to sign him (to replace the departing Ozil?), the ITKs I know () insist the deal is done and will be concluded on Friday.

Ben Arfa is becoming a saga -

(Houghton) told Sky Sports News: "There isn't anything. We are aware of the speculation and that he has been linked to us but he is very much a Marseille player. There hasn't been any direct contact."

Hughton is hoping to make inroads in the transfer market before the window closes at the end of the month though.

"We have said all along that we need to boost the squad but it is difficult," he said. "It's not only us that have found it difficult, it's finding the right players and the right values. We know how difficult this league will be and we need to be ready for it."

I'm not giving up on this yet. According to ChronicleLive Ben Arfa was informed the Newcastle deal was delayed upon his return to the team and promptly yelled at the club President, saying he would never return to the team. It still doesn't look good, but I like the fact that Ben Arfa at least wants to play for us.

Ben Arfa threatens to strike if he isn't moved - http://soccernet.esp...cc=5901&cc=5901

"I will not return to La Commanderie (OM's training ground). It's over. I am ready to not play this season," he told L'Equipe. "I have my pride, my dignity. I am not a stop-gap. Over time, people will see that I was right. Just because we are paid does not mean we are slaves."

The 23-year-old put himself in the shop window on Wednesday as part of Laurent Blanc's shadow France squad, scoring a stunning long-range goal within three minutes of his introduction at half-time against Norway.

I don't think last night's match needs mentioning. We started well, pressured their midfielders and defended well then things just broke down once they scored their first. I'm still lamenting Carroll's miss because that was simply a sitter that had to be buried.

We tired at the end of each half and it showed in how much more comfortable they were in position.

Although the defeat was expected, I was relatively happy with the fact that we fought for the whole match and didn't crumble as we have so often done at Old Trafford, even during the good days under Sir Bobby. We still lack a good central midfielder; Smith and Nolan are fucking hopeless. It'd be nice to have the Ben Arfa signing wrapped up before the Villa match because he genuinely offers something that our players currently don't, and then it'd be good to get in a central midfielder who actually has some composure.

I think we can survive this season because of the amount of shit teams that are in the league, but I'd prefer not to struggle like we inevitably will if we don't make any more signings.

Some other positives I'm taking away from this result, other than Carroll's continued development:

1. Liked what I saw from Wayne Routledge. Solid effort today, made some great runs and played with confidence. I think he has a chance to really contribute this season.

2. Also liked what I saw from Jonas. Didn't get on the score sheet but worked his tail off the entire game until he was substituted.

3. Kevin Nolan. Newcastle's version of Pedroia. Gritty, and his first goal was a prime example of never giving up on a play.

Remain concerned about the backline. If not for Carew putting his PK into Row Z, and a rather fortunate offsides call on Ashely Young, this may have been a much different match. Perch made some plays, and Enrique looks extremely solid at left back, but with Taylor out for three months, this will remain a concern. Hopefully Tiote can join the squad soon and provide some support from the midfield.
