Sox reach verbal agreement with Vitek
QUOTE
Vitek said that he and the Sox have already reached a verbal agreement for a signing bonus that represents “a fair number to them and a fair number to me.” A baseball source indicated that the agreement was for the Major League Baseball slot recommendation for the 20th pitch of the draft.

Sox agree to deal with Power Hitting Byce Brentz
QUOTE
Outfielder Bryce Brentz, whom the Red Sox selected with their second pick of the 2010 draft (No. 36 overall), has informed the team that he will sign for the Major League Baseball recommended slot bonus. The amount of the bonus is approximately $891,000.

I wasn't sure if this was the best place to put this? But PG has scouting reports up for the first round, that were pay content prior to the draft. Really like what they had to say about Vitek. I think they eventually post the top 10 rounds all free, but they only have the first 32 picks up for now.

http://www.perfectga...px?article=4846

QUOTE
UPDATE (5/15): Vitek has exceeded scouts’ expectations for him this spring, and now has a legitimate shot of being drafted late in the first round, or sandwich round, at worst. He’s been a force for Ball State, both at the plate and on the mound, and has generally become more refined in all areas of his game. Through mid-May, Vitek was hitting .363-15-59, all team-leading figures, and also topped the Cardinals in runs (66) and doubles (17). Perhaps most remarkably, he posted those numbers while also leading the Ball State pitching staff in innings pitches (69), while going 3-4, 3.39 with 18 walks and 50 strikeouts. He has not taxed his arm by spending the bulk of the 2010 season at second base, but profiles more as a third baseman at the pro level. More importantly, he’s hit with power consistently and has emerged as one of the draft’s elite power threats.—AS

There's also a longer pre-season report above it.

QUOTE
Tiverton High standout Zach Kapstein, a star catcher and two-sport athlete, has been selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 44th round of the MLB draft. Kapstein, the nephew of Red Sox Senior Adviser Jeremy Kapstein, said it was a lifelong dream to be drafted by the Sox.
QUOTE
Kapstein, a 6'2" 195-lb catcher, hit .603 in his senior season, the best average in all of New England. He hit five home runs and stole 24 bases in 26 attempts.

Kapstein was a two-sport star at Tiverton. As a junior, Kapstein was a first-team All-State selection in football as a linebacker and as a running back. Now, however, he is committed to baseball full time.

Kapstein said he will sign right away and cannot wait to begin playing pro baseball. He was accepted at the University of Rhode Island and at the University of West Virginia, but intends to go straight into pro ball.

"I'm going to sign as soon as I can. That's what I'm going to do now, I'm going to sign," Kapstein said.

Interesting note by Keith Law in his blog

Exploding Offers
QUOTE
The Red Sox could shatter records for total signing bonuses in one draft if they sign all their picks, although they'll probably make some exploding offers and see who accepts first.

Twitter Explanation of Exploding Offers
QUOTE
Right, an exploding offer is no longer valid after a certain date, or if X other players accept their offers first.

The Sox are in very good shape to sign Coyle. A signing figure was agreed upon assuming Coyle was available when Boston was ready to pick him. Can't disclose the source, but he is not going to enroll at UNC unless something goes very wrong in the negotiation process.

When you put together the table, is it possible to note who the projected overslot/tough signs are, and/or include the BA rank?

Speier on Ranaudo

QUOTE
WHAT LIES AHEAD

Ranaudo wants to build upon his late-season performance by pitching in the Cape Cod League. Though he has not yet determined which team he will be pitching for, he will come to New England within the next week.

“It’s a new start for me. Honestly, I feel like I’m in midseason form right now,” said Ranaudo. “I told my dad the other day after my start, I wish I had five or six or seven more starts. Hopefully I can get that under my belt in the Cape, really develop some more and show the Red Sox that I’m still the same pitcher I was last year, still the same talent, and go from there.

Ranaudo is just the ninth college pitcher to have been taken by the Sox in the top 40 picks of the June draft. How many can you name? And can you name the guy drafted highest?

Hint:
4 of the 9 in the last 6 years, after a 14-year drought.

Another hint:
The four previous RHP have largely been successes while the four LHP have been busts.

Answer:
Kris Johnson 40 ('06), Bobby Sprowl 39 ('77), Ranaudo 39, Kevin Morton 29 ('89), Daniel Bard 28 ('06), Craig Hansen 26 ('05), Aaron Sele 23 ('91), Roger Clemens 19 ('83) ... and Tom Fischer 12 ('88)

Given that list, is he the highest-regarded college pitcher we've drafted since _____? (Who would you say?)

Although he may be the most recent, I'd say that Daniel Bard was at least as highly regarded as Ranaudo -- if not more. The summer before the draft he was ranked the #2 prospect in the Cape League Obviously the following spring shook up the rankings a bit, but he was still an elite prospect.

Yup. I think it's important to remember that both Bard and Hansen were extremely highly regarded coming into the draft. Both were deemed to be Top 10 arms who would slide due to signability. Renaudo may have a higher ceiling than either (assuming Bard remains in the bullpen) but he's no lock.

The "how highly regarded" Q is muddled by the big fall Ranaudo took after his injury. Neither Hansen nor Bard were ever considered the best pitcher in all of college and a potential #1 overall pick, as Ranaudo was going into this year. In fact, I'm not sure we've ever taken a guy like that. When you factor in both the pre-season and draft-day rankings (the latter based on the pre-season ranking plus the injury concern) I think you have to go back much further to find a guy whose clear upside was as high.

Not sure I'd go so far as to say that Renaudo was ever seriously considered as being better than Harper, but I'd certainly agree with the rest.

Bard and Hansen were listed in the 5-8 range based on talent only, weren't they? Hansen was a little higher but was perceived as being the biggest signing challenge. As an aside, I still remember the video clip with sound when the Yankees (considered the biggest competition for Bard) announced Ian Kennedy's name. Half a dozen people in the Red Sox draft room exploded out of their chairs and cheered when Kennedy's name was announced.

Is this a case where we can announce an over-slot signing early because he is a two sport athlete? I don't see how this deal is getting done so quickly otherwise.

It might be similar to Brandon Jacobs last year. Jacobs said a couple of days after the draft that he had a deal with the Sox, but it wasn't announced until just before August 15. Perkins might mean he's reporting to Fort Myers eventually, but not now.

John Sickels has his review of the Sox draft up: http://www.minorleag...eview#storyjump

He reviews the top ten, and, despite some less than positive comments on the individual picks (Vitek has no position, Renaudo may already be past his peak, Coyle is an overdraft, Price is a reliever), concludes, in part,

"Vitek, Brentz, Ranaudo, Workman, and Cecchini are all first-round talents when things are going well... Coyle is a good player. Ramos and Perkins are raw, but in some draft classes they could have gone as high as the second round given their tools...All in all, I think this is a great class."

To me, the interesting part is his list of 5 others of note:

13-Keith Couch, RHP, Adelphi
15-Steve Wilkerson, SS, Georgia HS
16-Adam Duke, RHP, Utah HS
19-Eric Jaffe, RHP, California HS
20-Roderick Shoulders, C-1B, Florida HS

He doesn't comment on any of these. Duke and Jaffe I have often seen identified as sleepers, and occasionally Wilkerson. The other two, not so much.

Signings

QUOTE
In addition to the signings of Kolbrin Vitek and Bryce Brentz, SoxProspects has learned that four additional 2010 draftees have signed. Garrett Rau, a righty selected in the 12th round out of California Baptist, was 5-1 with a 4.66 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 56 innings this season. He also played infield for the Lancers, posting an OPS of 1.078 in 2010 after transferring from Ventura College. Keith Couch, a 13th round pick out of Adelphi, struck out 83 in 76.1 inning while posting a 2.24 ERA in 2010. Third basemen Nick Robinson, taken in the 39th round out of North Central College, led his team with a .427 batting average and a 1.039 OPS. He is also the nephew of Red Sox amateur scout Jim Robinson. Jayson Hernandez, selected in the 41st round out of Rutgers, hit .312 with an OPS of .824 as the Scarlet Knights' starting catcher. All four players will open their professional careers next week with Lowell.

Great WEEI article about 4th rounder Garin Cecchini

Definitely an enjoyable read. Cecchini sounds like a good kid and a high character player, for what it's worth. He also sounds like he really wants to win.

QUOTE
That love of work is what drew Cecchini to the LSU baseball program. Offered scholarships and starting jobs by schools all over the country, Cecchini settled on the only school to not guarantee him an opening day job. Anticipating that he will one day compete for a job at the big league level, Cecchini saw no use in taking something handed to him at the college level.

Reading that reminded me a little of Pedroia giving up his scholarship at ASU because he wanted to win the CWS. Not quite the same, but I like his attitude -- confident and hard working.

I don't think I'm alone - but if Cuzzitt needs his lawn mowed, or other chores completed to get the chart up there - let us know - as this is like waiting until Boxing Day to open Christmas presents!

Awesomeness, Cuzittt.

They also signed Michael Gleason per yesterday's announcement, FYI.

Great to see the chart back for another year.

Some additional assignment info, per the official release:

QUOTE
Rau, Couch, Robinson and Hernandez have been assigned to Lowell while Gleason, Yoder, Kang and Larsson-Danforth have been assigned to the Rookie-Level Gulf Coast League Red Sox.

Also, Zach Kapstein is Jeremy Kapstein's nephew:

QUOTE
The club also took Rhode Island native Zach Kapstein in the 44th round. He's the nephew of Red Sox senior advisor for baseball projects Jeremy Kapstein.

Is Dustin (Hunter) Renfroe related to 2009 draft pick David Renfroe? They both went to high school/academy in Mississippi.

Apparently not according to this link "PROSPECT ON THE RISE: Hunter Renfroe, c/rhp, Copiah Academy. No relation to David Renfroe (top Mississippi draft in 2009), he has homered 20 times, drawn 62 walks."

Thanks. I didn't find that reference when I was checking the web. Although David Renfroe's father, Laddie, was born in Mississippi, he played high school ball in Nashua (and apparently some games at Holman Stadium). He also had a cup of coffee with the Cubs in 1991, pitching in four games.

QUOTE
Travis (Boston): What is the max that any team has spent on thei entire draft? The Red Sox seem to be in line to top whatever that figure is, especially if Ranaudo dominates the Cape League.

Jim Callis: The most bonus money a team ever has spent is the $11.5 million the Nationals spent in 2009, and that figure doesn't include another $7.6 million in salary guarantees to Stephen Strasburg. The Red Sox have spent $2.2 million on their top two picks (Kolbrin Vitek, Bryce Brentz), and the asking price for their next four choices (Anthony Ranaudo, Brandon Workman, Sean Coyle, Garin Cecchini) is somewhere in the neighborhood of $9.5 million. They also took some tough late signs, too.

They may as well throw their money around. There's no telling what the next CBA will do to the draft.
