Just to reiterate how good Brentz and Ranaudo were heading into the season, I present to you Baseball America's 2010 pre season All-Americans. And of course, our boys Ranaudo and Brentz are first team. It's amazing how they both fell to the Red Sox. Also, I dug up the College Baseball Blog's Top 100 Players for the 2010 Season.. Guess who's #1 and #2?

Catcher Matt Szczur of Villanova went 160th as a 5th round pick to the Chicago CUBS.
Here is hoping the Cubbies bid cheap and he holds out and plays Football again and returns next year to the Draft. (Probability = 0% )
The Red Sox drafted no one athletes that saved a life this year...LOL

Does Vitek remind anyone of a not as highly regarded Gordon Beckham?

Baseballl America's Aaron Fitt threw out the name Bill Mueller about Vitek's offensive capability at third base -- but Bill Mueller in his .326/19 HR year, not in his .268/10 HR years.

Good for Matt. For those who don't know (probably most everyone on the board), Szczur (pronounced like Julius Caesar) was the most outstanding player in this year's Villanova FCS (1AA) football championship. And he may be an even better baseball player. BHEC above is referencing Szczur also having providing a blood donation that may save an infant girl's life.

I wonder if there was a strategy to get college players this year who would be able to contribute/peak at the same time as the HS draftees of 06-09 drafts. Vitek, Brentz, Ranaudo and Workman might be only a year behind age/advancement (especially if some of the arms end up in the pen) compared to Kelly, Lars, Kalish, Iglesias, Rizzo and Doubront. Especially because at least three of them are going to spend the whole rookie ball season at Lowell, they could be on the Ellsbury/Pedroia track of being in Portland in the middle of next summer.

We can always hope he'll be another Mike Piazza..... right?
