NY minor league prospect news

Today's tidbits from the game between the major league team and a bunch of their biggest prospects:
1) Montero ripped two hits off Javier Vazquez, a double to right-center and a single to left. Girardi was saying he always seems to find a way to get the barrel on the ball, the second hit was on a pitch at his ankles.
2) Slade Heathcott (1st round pick in 2009, CF) is really really fast. He beat out a routine grounder to A-Rod in the first, and later was barely out on a routine grounder to first.

Heathcott intrigues me. He seems to have a Josh Hamilton type skillset.

The only tool I saw from Heathcott today was speed, but he looked like Gardner or Ichiro out there, really impressive.

Actually the results came in yesterday, torn elbow ligament. Quite a bit of info here:

At what point do his remaining defenders/optimists in Yankeeland give it up?

Well, the party line there is that they're just looking for him to get in innings and keep his walks down (and although he's given up 16 hits in 8 innings, he has only given up one BB so far). But I agree, it seems pretty clear to me that he's a major dud.

.945 OPS in AA in his age 21 season, pretty impressive for an OF, let alone a C.

But Romine is the real NY prospect story so far. He plays in Trenton, which is a major pitcher's park. He has very good overall numbers (.391/.520/.911), but his road numbers are absurd (.423/.642/1.064, hitting .388 in 70 PAs).
Also, he had two doubles yesterday off Casey Kelly.

Nice to see. The best sign is he hasn't been walking people.
At least, with this most recent spurt of success, he may now have a little trade value.

Speaking of big bucks, Kei Igawa took the loss tonight against Pawtucket, giving up 4 hits and the go-ahead run in 1.2 innings of work. He did strike out two batters. Kei always could strike people out. Cashman read where he led the Central League in Ks and signed him. I think they fired the guy who recommended Igawa to Cashman. At the very least, they cut his eyes out of his head.

Also, Brandon Laird (Gerald's little bro), NY's AA third baseman, hit a grand slam and a 3 run HR today. He's got 18 HRs and 76 RBIs playing in a pitcher's park (OPS home of .832, road of .977), and is leading all of baseball in RBIs (!!!).
He's not a huge prospect, but he's got to be at least playing himself into contention:

A 2009 draft pick who's skyrocketed up the NY prospect rankings is Graham Stoneburner, who's got a 1.93 ERA and .762 WHIP in 7 starts since being promoted to Trenton (A+), he's probably a top 10 prospect now.

When I started reading this paragraph I thought you were talking about Shaeffer Hall. His age (3 days apart!), track record, and numbers are very similar to Stoneburner's.

BTW, it's Tampa, not Trenton.

Stuff isn't all that impressive (low 90's guy) good results though.
Betances killing it again today; 5IP/1H/6K 0.39 ERA on the year. The potential was there, but I sure as fuck didn't expect this.

Anyway, given the buzz about Sanchez it seems likely that if they all continue to play well, we could see the Yankees having 3 catchers on the Top 100 prospects list this offseason. And in addition to Cervelli (and to a lesser extent JR Murphy) that is quite a bit of young depth at one position.

And if the Yankees are smart, they will trade some of that depth for either pitching or OF bats....

Three more starts since then (including tonight), and he's continued his dominance:
34 13 2 2 6 39 combined through six starts (each of 5 or 6 innings), 0.53 ERA and 0.56 WHIP.

Good news. I was wondering how he would respond to almost getting traded. It's kind of a shock to some of the guys the first time they see their name bandied about like that.

I hope he hits himself into untouchable status before the end of the month.

Yankees almost traded Mariano once. JA probably remembers the details better than I do but his name was in talks and then all of a sudden Stick Michael got the report from Columbus that Mo was throwing 95 mph and they brought him up for a look in June of 1995.

Yeah, allegedly, it was a deal for Wells in '95 that got scuttled.
