The Swiss had the hammer but elected to concede the scoreless game and carry it to the 10th.

I didn't see the shot, and am far from an expert, but my guess would be that the opponent's rock would serve as a backstop. If they pushed the Swiss rock too far away, theoretically the Swedish rock could get knocked out. However if you leave it right in front of the opponent's rock, any attempts to knock that out end up knocking your own rock out, and leaving the opponent's there basically unmoved.
Hopefully that made sense, even though I'm not sure it's the right reason.

Thanks, that definitely does make sense, though I think it might apply less here than it usually would in view of the game situation - the Swedes were up by one in the 10th end, and basically were only concerned with preventing the Swiss from getting two with the hammer.
I also think I may have just been misunderstanding things from a physics standpoint - if you want to knock an opponent's rock out of the house, you have to give your rock enough weight that it would go out of the house itself if no collision took place. And given this amount of weight, it might be difficult to get the rock to curl around the guard - it definitely should have been doable, but perhaps the risk of an air-ball was too great. Especially since the shot the Swedes ultimately did choose should have been enough to get the job done, had Edin not messed up the last shot.
