Wow, they choked it away in the 10th and lose it in the 11th with the hammer.

Oh well, at least they're not McCormick & Shuster.

Bernard was pretty money the past week, too. Tough one for Canada.

The shot in the 11th is at least somewhat difficult, she had a relatively easy takeout in the 10th that would've ended it and jammed it, leaving Sweden an easy takeout for the deuce to force the extra end. Like others have said, just poor shot making.

That was a great match. I was pulling for Canada, but was happy for Sweden. The crowd really impressed me during the last couple of ends, classily being quiet for Sweden's big shots, letting the sweepers hear the directions. Curling took a great leap forward this Olympics--I hope to see it at least once or twice a year on regular cable from here on in.

Great performance by the Swedes. If Canada fails to take the most golds in Vancouver, that one'll hurt a lot.

Watching the bronze medal game right now...the announcers were talking about Schuster and his team withdrawing from the World Championships that are in April...they were KILLING him for basically wasting the past 11 months of training as the #1 US team...the World Championships are very prestigious and he should go for the experience, etc...they weren't screaming or anything, but I thought it was huge criticism...

Sweden, on their last stone in the 9th end, was facing outright disaster -- 4 Swiss rocks in the house and none of their own in there and clinging to a 4-3 lead. They knocked ALL of them out in one spectacular combination shot.

The Swiss had the hammer but elected to concede the scoreless game and carry it to the 10th.

Yeah, that was awesome. It must be enormously fun to be able to just let fly and obliterate every rock in the house.

And now a double-takeout which probably had a much higher degree of difficulty.

I'm wondering if one of our curling experts can explain this for me: on their third-to-last shot, Switzerland went around the guard and put their rock just inside the 12-foot circle at the back of the house. The commentators seemed to think that Sweden were then forced to draw in front of this rock, as indeed they did. What I don't understand is why they couldn't have added just a touch more weight to the shot and tried to take out the Swiss rock (it wouldn't have taken much contact to knock it out of the back of the house.) Surely when trying to avoid giving up two, the top priority has to be removing the opponent's rocks from the house whenever possible. What am I missing here?

I didn't see the shot, and am far from an expert, but my guess would be that the opponent's rock would serve as a backstop. If they pushed the Swiss rock too far away, theoretically the Swedish rock could get knocked out. However if you leave it right in front of the opponent's rock, any attempts to knock that out end up knocking your own rock out, and leaving the opponent's there basically unmoved.

Hopefully that made sense, even though I'm not sure it's the right reason.

Thanks, that definitely does make sense, though I think it might apply less here than it usually would in view of the game situation - the Swedes were up by one in the 10th end, and basically were only concerned with preventing the Swiss from getting two with the hammer.

I also think I may have just been misunderstanding things from a physics standpoint - if you want to knock an opponent's rock out of the house, you have to give your rock enough weight that it would go out of the house itself if no collision took place. And given this amount of weight, it might be difficult to get the rock to curl around the guard - it definitely should have been doable, but perhaps the risk of an air-ball was too great. Especially since the shot the Swedes ultimately did choose should have been enough to get the job done, had Edin not messed up the last shot.

The amazing Kevin Martin actually made an error on the line call, and still steals the end. I think he's the best curler I've ever seen. Short, bald, and kinda dumpy -- just shows to go ya that some sports don't require an athletic body type.
