I'd kill for this thing, but it's going to be too expensive. $500 yes, $1000 not a chance. Maybe in a year or two. Still waiting to get an iPhone, for that matter.

There is no 3G, only wireless.
So you can only use that functionality in a place with wireless already. Not nearly as cool.

If this is $600, I'll pull the trigger at release. I spent $2300 for a convertible tablet two summers ago, so I'm a sucker for this movement.

They're not even done with the presentation and we already have our first internet flinging of poop.

It's called a satchel. Indiana Jones wears one.
Is this thing really $1,000?

ETA: Yup, an extra $130 for 3G.
Ah, plus, no camera? Bummer. Not being able to video-chat with this strikes me as a major drawback.

Maybe true...but until someone answers this:
It won't replace your smartphone, which you carry around in your pocket, or your laptop, which needs a keyboard. Will you want to pay nearly $1,000 to carry around a tablet, along with your mobile phone, your work BlackBerry, your laptop, and your Kindle?
Then the iPad is probably more for tech enthusiasts then a tool for those in business.

For the people (like me!) who are looking for an inexpensive laptop to sit on the couch and surf the internet and maybe do a few other things, $499 is a fantastic price.

While I'll agree with the points about new technology and how it'll be obsolete almost immediately, I found most of that article irritating. The author referenced netbooks. Seriously. He'd rather pay $400 for one of the most compromised computing experiences ever than potentially $500-700 for the first step in the portable interface of the next decade.
I don't have a smart phone, and probably never will so long as Nokia keeps making indestructible blocks, and this thing is a multifunction device that will do just like its proponents say: bridge the gap between laptops and smartphones, not compete with either exclusively. As a handheld device in the home or seated in public, the multifunction device will be the standard. Saying it isn't now means nothing. These won't be used for word processing, and the messaging you'll use it for will eventually utilize something like TikiNote or gesture shorthand with a stylus/finger tip. And I live in Montana and nobody's mugging anybody, for a number of reasons.
The worst part of it is the overarching naysay of tablets in general. "The Windows tablet didn't work--there's a reason." I absolutely hate that. It's like saying, "Hovercraft/rocket packs/supersonic airplanes didn't work out--so obviously they never will."
So it comes back to the points about price and whether buying into the first round of a device paradigm is ever the most prudent thing to do. This is always the argument and this release is (note, Apple fans) no different.
I want a handheld internet and e-reader device that doesn't suck. I'd pay $600+ for it. People who'd rather drop $200 here and there on compromises seem even less sensible to me.

Or... It's the thing for all those non-techie non-power-business users who sit on their couches and surf while watching TV. Meaning a whole lot of people.

Same. I will probably shell out the money for the 3G, but the prices seem very reasonable. This thing is going to make a fortune.

Yeah, it's probably annoying how often I take over presentations when in bookstores about how everyone should buy digital. Scoliosis: solved.

While it's obviously more convenient, the extra cash plus the monthly charge (did I hear $60 per month?) probably isn't worth it to me. I've had an iPod Touch (wi-fi only) and just got a Droid (both wi-fi & 3G), so I'm familiar with using products with both feature sets, and still wouldn't think it's worth it. To me, anyway.

Lenovo has a pretty cool design for combining keyboard with carrying shell in their newest tablets. Apple looks like they've adopted it well.
