You're gonna be out of market soon, right? Will be subbing to the cable package likely so there's also the plsceshifting route with a sling or volkano or whatever and they have iPad apps.

Yes, and I am fine with paying a hundred bucks to watch 150+ games but not to watch the ten or so I'd be watching away from home.

Now maketh with the english...sling or volkano?

I can get something that will allow me to watch my regular TV with whatever subscriptions I have on an iPad? Pardon me while I googleate.

Yeah, slingbox has been doing it for a while, the vulkano is a newer product that seems to have some warts right now that is like a slingbox+tivo+roku in one. Slings are around 150-300, vulkanos 100-200; sling app at itunes is 30 and vulkano is 10... from what I've gathered the placeshifting is where the warts aren't on the vulkanos, fwiw.

Apologies if this was asked-and-answered elsewhere in the thread... can I use the iPad to output video/audio to a TV? I got output cables for my old video iPod and was able to change a setting that allowed me to send a show/movie to my TV (cable is just an old fashioned red/white/yellow thingee). Haven't been able to find the same setting for the iPad. Want to be able to send content from my HuluPlus app to the TV.

Using an IPAD for the first time. Very cool but major issue getting online via my home network. Settings say I'm connected to my network however, no Internet access. Only way I was able to get online was to reset my Linksys router to the default settings. Help!

I forget the setting, but if you google this issue, you'll find there's a router setting you need to adjust, that basically prioritizes some kinds of connections over others. You need to set it one way or the other so that your iPad gets on. Sorry I'm not more help, but I had the same problem. It was a simple fix. Maybe this rings a bell with some other truly tech person who knows what I'm talking about.

So I'm starting to move a lot of my day-to-day work activity to my iPad, in an attempt to justify having it with me all the time. The one thing I'm still looking for is a good note-taking app. I'm in meetings regularly where I need to make notes/diagrams, and would like to just replace the paper pad I usually have with me. Can anyone recommend a good iApp that does a decent job of handling "written" notes? I've got fairly decent stylus as well, but so far, most of the (free) apps I've tried do a pretty bad job at handling written text.

That's a good rundown. But I was specifically looking for an app that will let me take notes with a stylus. I type like a drunken monkey, and would never be able to get by with a type-only note taking option. I've ended up with a couple of options; Notes Plus and Noteshelf

Notes Plus is really useful for some tasks, with it's auto recognition and smoothing of shapes, and the fact that I CAN drop typed text anywhere in a note if I choose. But it's a lttle flaky with taking my chicken scratch notes, sometimes seeming to miss a few strokes on letters.

Noteshelf doesn't have all the other bells and whistles, but the recognition of stylus strokes is superior. Especially when you use the zoomed view window.

Now they just need to make a finer tipped capacitive stylus, and I'll officially be the geekiest guy at the table in meetings.

I've tried a couple of note taking programs and ended up settling on Noteshelf. The one must-have for me is some form of online syncing. I don't want to keep all of my notes locally in case I lose my iPad and Notesplus syncs seamlessly with Evernote.

Kind of lame that when I tried to pull up the 60 Minutes Obama interview last night, CBS wanted me to buy a $5 app. But I can watch it for free online.

My dad just got an Ipad 2 and needs a case. Should he get the official Apple folding case/cover or is there a good 3rd party alternative? He will mostly use it at home and take it on the plane when traveling. I think he might be better off with something that includes a protective back unlike the official Apple case. Is it wise to get a plastic screen protector as well or is a case sufficient?

The magnet case Apple makes is pretty cool, very light, and not intrusive. If most of the use going to be at home, there is no need to protect the back. There really isn't a reason to protect the back, anyway, it offers its own protection. I haven't seen any 3rd party choices but the one Apple makes is not to be scoffed at.

As well, I don't think you need a screen protector, especially if you get a case. That would be redundant.

I'm pretty happy with the cheapie case/stand I got. I found it at an Office Max, but I'd assume Fry's, Best Buy might carry them.

I got the Apple bluetooth keyboard to go with it and make it a little workstation at work. Unfortunately, I realized two seconds after getting it set up that I still needed a mouse/trackpad.

First, the screen protector. Don't take chances with a toy this nice. Go to Best Buy, get the Zagg Invisible Shield, and pay them the $8 to install it for you professionally. This is worth it's weight in gold, and it looks beautiful. It also provides the best protection for the screen...PERIOD.

As for cases, if you want total protection and don't mind a little extra weight, then the Otterbox Defender is the way to go.

Otterbox Defender ($90 on their site; $80 on amazon w/ prime): Total (but noticeably heavier) protection for ultimate peace of mind. (amazon price)

If you want something lighter, there are tons of options, but all pretty pricey as well. Let's face it, cases for these things just aren't cheap. Here are a few suggestions:

1. iKit Carbon Case ($30): Similar in aesthetics to the Otterbox Defender, but not as protective at all.

2. JoyFactory SmartSuit2 ($60): Has their own smart cover like apples, but connected to a back shell. Good for those who want to keep the smart cover, but want the back protected as well.

3. Case-mate Pop Case ($50): Take your pick really, but I prefer the 'Pop" Case.

4. The 'Handstand' ($50): Strap for holding the iPad while doing whatever with it. Great for one-handed typists and pervs alike!

5. Kensington Key Folio ($40): Basic & $100 model with bluetooth keyboard. Versatile line with good durability and reputation.

6. Marware Microshell ($40): Thin back rubberized shell that works with Apple's smart cover.

7. ColcaSac Uintah ($40): For naturalists, this one is a sleeve with hemp and very soft fur throughout.

8. BodyGuardz Armor Carbon Fiber ($30): Standard CF back shell works with smart cover.

9. iSkin Summit ($95): A full bag-style with thick protection and shoulder strap. If you're into that sort of thing.

I have the Apple cover only. It's fine for me. I use my iPad at home or on the train pretty exclusively. When not in use while I'm commuting, it's in a bag with the cover on, so I don't feel I need a case. I agree that if you have the cover, the screen protector is at least fairly redundant, though not completely. I don't have one.

I think one aspect to consider in the cover vs. case decision is whether he thinks he'll drop it. It's a risk calculation. I've had a number of gadgets over the years and have never dropped any (at least not any drops that led to damage). So the cost of more protective cases and the "enjoyment cost" of having heavier gadgets to hold and carry does not to me make case purchasing a worthwhile proposition, given my time without dropping.

I was in a meeting yesterday with a guy who had this Logitech bluetooth keyboard for his iPad 2, and it also acts as a kind of cover-protecter. When not in use, place the iPad face down on the keyboard, and it clicks in tightly (second picture below). About $100 at Best Buy. I ordered an iPad that's due to arrive in two weeks, and I think I'm going to get this keyboard both for utility and protection.

I've tested this case. It has a fatal flaw. See those corners along the front edge in front of the keyboard? They dig right into your hands when you type.

You are better off getting a case with a detachable keyboard. That gives you the flexibility to put the keyboard in your lap as well as leave the keyboard at home if you want to lighten your load.

My wife and I are buying an iPad tonight.

A couple questions:

-- I am inclined to buy the WiFi only model, if I can tether once in a while. I have an iPhone (work issued, so I can't jailbreak it) and a Droid, both on VZW. I'm not a particularly tech-savvy guy -- the Tasker app on Android maxes out my capabilities. I'm not a complete fucking idiot, however, so if it's simply a matter of following jargon-free, step-by-step instructions, I can handle that. What's the degree-of-difficulty on tethering? (I have read the discussion here, but you techies sometimes make this shit seem easy, when it's not for most of us.)

-- My daughter is profoundly disabled (8 years old, but the mentality of a 10-month old). A big reason we're getting the iPad is so she can play educational games -- Apple has some great offerings. Obviously, I'm concerned she's going to beat the shit out of the device. Any advices about cases, warranties, etc.? (The discussion upthread is helpful, but I thought I'd ask if anyone could offer refined advice based on my specific situation.)

Thanks in advance.

Free tethering isn't easy. I was rooted on my Droid, and my iPhone is jail-broken, and the former isn't an easy thing for someone who isn't tech savvy, and the latter you've indicated you can't do.

You can tether via your iPhone for a price. 3G is pretty much passable for regular browsing. More intense things like streaming movies are a bit tougher. It's your choice if you'd like a dedicated 3G connection to your iPad, or if you'd tether via your iPhone. I'd go for the latter, but that's purely a personal thing (and something that will save you a few bucks). The only cons to it is you're going to be using a bit of battery life to set up a hotspot on your phone.

Basically, if you're going to tether through your iPhone, it's a valid option. If you're going to be tethering through a Droid, don't bother as your phone will be dead in an hour. If you want something more plug and play, just opt for the 3G iPad.

edit - and regarding a case, I'd go with CTHP's suggestion of the Otterbox. They're pretty much the gold standard for heavy duty Apple cases. My brother has one for his iPhone 4 and he can literally drop the thing 5 feet to the floor and the thing just bounces and absorbs all of the shock. Granted there's likely no case that will make any of these devices indestructible, but a case that like and a good screen shield is a good start.

if you buy from best buy they have accidental warranty coverage that is fairly expensive, though if she breaks it after the ipad2 is discontinued and the ipad3D is available, you'll get the same capacity in the newer model as a replacement.

Thanks.

Suppose I can get around the power issue -- can I tether using an unrooted Droid? (I would mostly tether on long car rides, so I could use the car charger to power my Droid.)

The architectural firm I work for recently added a few IPads to the tech tool bag. I am looking for some apps that would allow me to upload a complete architectural plan set and browse them, zoom in and out, quickly change to other sheets. The drawings are large, 30"x42" in size and each set is 250-400 pages long.

I have PDFReader and GoodReader installed already which work with varying degrees of success. Has anyone had similar experiences? Any recommendations for viewing apps that can handle the larger files and allow for easy organization of multiple files?

Thanks for the help.

I think GoodReader is the way to go, but those must be gigantic files. I think the iPad will struggle with them in any case. You might want to print them to PDF in smaller blocks if you can just to the iPad won't have to handle as big a file at a time.

Also, you might want to look at iAnnotate if you ever feel the need to mark up your drawings.

Bought an iPad2 while at Foxwoods a few weeks back, and am about to read this whole thread (good stuff so far). I have some general comments ...

I love it. Or I suppose tablets in general (as opposed to a laptop, for home use). Super light, I don't have some super hot battery burning my nuts, Internet is always a button press away (no more 'standing by'). Again, I love it.

My only issues ...

1. Don't like being tied to Safari. On my PC, I use firefox for one reason: ad block plus. I hate that the iPad has brought back Internet advertising. Really annoying.

2. Not having flash sucks. This is my first Apple product. I'm in the door. They hooked me. But my next tablet purchase will be an Android, unless this is remedied.

Someone out there tell me that these issues can and/or will be resolved.

Thanks saints. You are right about the file sizes, they tend to be 500mb if you put the sheets all together. We are trying different printing and sheet sizes to get the size down and performance up. I will let people know how it turns out.

If anyone runs across some decent construction/architecture apps, I would love to hear about them.

I think you're going to be waiting a long time for flash. I also think you're overrating it. Many sites have moved to HTML5 + other tech rendering. The leftovers are usually crappy games and an occasional video....it's sometimes a problem but overall it's something that is seldom a real issue. There are some attempts at solutions, but I really doubt you'll see anything from apple, and it's probably for the better.Read up on those other tablets that support flash and you'll read about horrible crashing issues, battery drains, and only partial support. Fundamentally, flash sort of expects a pointer, which makes it not very translatable to the touch interface

Atomic browser has decent ad blocking built in. And, as teddykgb said, Apple is almost certainly never going to add flash. They consider it a deliberate feature, not a flaw that needs to be fixed. I really don't miss flash when using my iPad, but if you really want access to flash content, there are a couple of third-party browers (e.g., Skyfire) that convert the flash content on their servers to iPad viewable formats.

1. You aren't tied to Safari - there are a ton of web browsers for the ipad, Try Atomic Web Browser (or search for one that meets your needs), which has adblocker built in, as do many others....

2. Try SkyFire Web Browser which can handle Flash

SkyFire Web Browser for iPad has just been released in the App Store just in time for the holidays. As many of you may already know, Apple does not allow Adobe Flash application on the iPad. But SkyFire Browser for iPad is the exception. SkyFire is a unique browser that lets users view Flash videos. You cannot do that with any other browser out there because Apple does not allow Flash to be installed and running on the iOS. SkyFire go around this restriction by processing Flash content on their own servers, and then stream Flash video data back to your iPad. If you watch a lot of Flash based videos, this is a must-have app.

Thanks BH and Teddy. I appreciate the responses.

Re: flash. I'm not really a flash games guy, so I figured flash wouldn't be a big deal. But, for example, I went to read Chad finn's chat over at the Boston globe and I can't get that chat window/software to scroll. So you can see only the first few questions. On Facebook, someone linked to a local news video they were in, that wouldn't play. Etc etc. They start to pile up enough that it's noticeable. We'll see how web content / android tablets progress in the future... Still love the iPad.

Will def check out atomic browser. Hate ads.

Oh, and also would love to have a 'private' browsing feature in my browser (another knock on this safari browser)

1. You aren't tied to Safari - there are a ton of web browsers for the ipad, Try Atomic Web Browser (or search for one that meets your needs), which has adblocker built in, as do many others....

2. Try SkyFire Web Browser which can handle Flash

Awesome. Thanks. Def going to try this all out.

My iPad2 just arrived - I bought the Brookstone Bluetooth Keyboard with Portfolio case and so far so good. I'm going to get one of the screen protectors, too, since I am notoriously messy. I'm going to get Angry Birds and the MLB app - any other recommendations? Also, is this like an iPod - if I upload via iTunes on my Mac at home, will I be unable to upload apps via iTunes on my PC at work?

Is there a better FB app on the horizon?

Set up my mom's new iPad2 the other night and I couldn't believe how shitty the app was. One of the worst looking apps that I've ever seen on either Android or Apple.

Friendly is a piece of shit. It crashes, doesn't work, and sucks.

I just use the iPhone Facebook app-- although it doesn't look like a pixelated piece of crap because I jailbroke and installed RetinaPad which adjusts the resolution of each graphical component separately so the app looks almost 100% native. Without that it was garbage, but like TD, I've heard negative things about Friendly.

I've never had a problem with it. There's an update that caused it to lock up and crash, but all it took was a restart to fix it.

For whatever reason the most recent update made the app worse. It's a piece of garbage. I have never had so many problems with any app on any device and I own a HTC Hero.

Woot is selling sold a 64GB iPad with AT&T 3G (1st gen refurb) for $489.99 today + $5 shipping. The closest deal I could find was $529 for the same model directly from AT&T (with one month of 3G service required). I'm in for one, so I'm now the proud owner of a new (to me) iPad. Woot is an Amazon company, but there is currently very little synergy between the two. Woot won't accept Amazon gift cards, nor will the purchase be a "three pointer" for Amazon rewards card members. However, this deal does likely signal that you'll see some iPad price drops on Amazon proper.

Edit: This deal is no longer available, it's sold out on Woot.

Can any of you recommend a good stylus for iPad 2? One that would work well with Noteshelf?

Edit: sorry one more question -- assuming I can access any/all music and videos (from iTunes) via iCloud - what data plan should I be looking at for a 16GB 3g/WiFi iPad so as not to run over?

Thank you.

I've loaded a bunch of porn videos into the "Videos" section of my iPad. So now you hit the "Videos" icon, and all my pornos show up on the screen, which isn't ideal for when my 5 year-old niece is playing with it.

Can anyone recommend an app for hiding this stuff in a protected folder or something? Or maybe how to password protect the "Videos" icon?

To the best of my knowledge, the only solutions that exist with stock iPad are apps which force you to store the videos in a password protected app but then have to access them from within that app. I'm not sure of any video/movie apps, but they probably exist.

If you jailbreak you can use Locktopus to password protect individual apps.

I presume that they show up under "movies" in the video app? If you turn on Restrictions under Settings, you can select "Don't allow movies" under "Allowed content." No movies will show up in the video app until you turn off the restriction.
