There a few details yet to be worked out, but a very entertaining SABR event is in the works for January 18, which is the Martin Luther King holiday. It will be held during the day on the second floor of the Baseball Tavern, just down the street from Fenway Park, and scheduled to speak are:

Larry Tye: author of "Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend"

Bill Monbouquette: Red Sox pitcher 1958-1965

Keith Law: ESPN

Fernando Perez: Tampa Bay Rays outfielder

More details to follow, including the possible addition of another featured speaker.

I'm very impressed that you guys got Keith Law to show up. (and Fernando Perez?! How?)
I'm going to try to be there.

How? A simple question deserves a simple answer, which is: I asked.

As noted earlier, more details will follow, including the time slots for each presenter. As always, the event is free -- donations are gratiously accepted -- and open to the public.

Little known fact Fernando Perez can calculate his own defensive metrics while he is on the field.

He is also a noted poet.

All of these are results of the genetic mutations he was born with being from Elizabeth, NJ.

Heard the Big O say today that he was going to a SABR event next week. Either he misspoke in referencing this one or he's attending a different one. It was followed by a snark comment (Curran maybe?) that "maybe they'll let you back into Sons of Sam Horn?"
"That dude is a piece of shit and every thing about him is fucking awful and ugly and ignorant. He makes every single fucking person that he interacts with worse. He makes conversations shittier, rooms warmer in the hot ass summer and colder in the freezing winter. He could single-handily cause a large-scale terrorist attack if his views were widespread and read/heard by the wrong folks...He spreads an incurable cancer when he brushes up against you. And he brushes up against you. And he brushes. He's a brusher."--Drocca

Ok, this might be a dumb question, but after following the link to the SABR Boston site about this event, I can't figure out if I should be paying for lunch/making a donation ahead of time somehow, or just showing up with cash/check. Anyone with a better understanding want to give me a clue?

David, it l looks like you (and others) have done a great job getting this together. I wish I could attend myself, but good luck to everyone lucky enough to be there.

You just need to show up. There will be a jar there to put money into if you can afford the $5 -- you won't be turned away if you choose not to donate (the money helps pay for the featured speakers)-- ditto lunch. If you don't want to eat at the event, you certainly don't have to.

I heard Larry Tye interviewed on the Diane Rehm Show out of DC about six months ago. He'd be worth the trip all by himself.

I've never been to one of these events before, but I'm certainly interested. I'm curious about the format these have, do the speakers talk on a specific subject for the bulk of their allotted time and then take Q&A, or is it more general/open than that?

It varies, but they typically talk for a bit and then we open up the room for questions. When Bill James was there a few years ago, he opted to just take questions. Others talk for much of their allotted time and take fewer questions. It really depends on their preference, and I can't say for sure what Monday's speakers will opt for.

I was very much looking forward to this, as the last meeting was great. But I'll be at the big local sf convention moderating a panel discussion on "Metaphors, Memes, and the Mainstreaming of SF" at 1:00 PM ... one of the rare instances where two of my hobbies collide badly. If I wasn't the moderator, I'd blow it off.

Is there any advance word on the date of the next meeting?

There is a nationwide SABR Day on January 30, which includes meetings all over the country.

Since Boston is having a meeting on the 18th, the meeting on the 30th will be dinner and drinks it looks like.

OK, this is getting ridiculous, because I'll be in New York City seeing Mission of Burma at the Bowery Ballroom (passion #3). Of course, according to Tom Ricardo, getting praise on this board is all I have to live for, so maybe these conflicts involving entirely unrelated passions and large groups of friends with not a lot of overlap -- maybe I've hallucinated that. smile.gif

A reminder that the event is tomorrow [Monday]. Keith Law has had to cancel -- we are working to find a last-minute replacement -- but everyone else is a go. Hope to see you there.

That doesn't change the time of things starting, does it (he asks hopefully)?

The schedule remains the same, sans Law.
