Way back in 2001 the Patriots faced the defending 1999 Super Bowl Champion St. Louis Rams. No pundit thought the Pats could win in that game and, despite a surprising frisky effort, they were right. The loss dropped the Pats to 5-5 on the year, and it was difficult to figure out exactly what the team's expectations should be.

But some special started after that loss. A bounce back win against the Saints became a winning streak after a narrow 17-16 victory over the Jets. The streak stretched to three, then four with an OT win at Buffalo. They were rolling, and finished the regular season with two more wins over the Dolphins and Panthers. That loss against the seemingly unstoppable Rams would prove to be their last that year.

Could something like that happen today? I mean, they did just get pasted by a high flying, Super Bowl-contending NFC powerhouse, so maybe there's some symmetry there. But that's not exactly the point.

The point is that the Halloween costumes have been put away. The turkey leftovers have been devoured. The Christmas shopping has been put off long enough.

It's December, the proving ground for any team desiring a deep January run. The pretenders have already begun falling away, but December will mint the true NFL contenders. The Patriots have issues, no doubt. But they have five games to address their schemes and play-calling. Five games to steel themselves for a playoff grind. Five games to decide what sort of team they want to be.

It begins on Sunday.

Edited for fuzzy memory.

The Rams weren't actually the defending SB champs (Ravens all-time defense in 2000 FTW), but I enjoy the main thrust of your post nonetheless.

No Ronnie Brown means Dolphins are infinitely less dangerous on the offense. Also these tidbits from FO:

QUOTE
By FO's stats, they are last in the league in defending short-yardage runs, but second in preventing yardage gained on 10-yard runs. Runners will get past the line and linebackers, but they're not getting by Bell and Wilson.

And another trouble spot for Fins:

QUOTE
...Miami runs a 3-4 defense, which is designed for the linemen to occupy blockers while the linebackers make plays. Akin Ayodele is just 42nd among inside linebackers, however, and Channing Crowder is 45th. If the Dolphins want to make the playoffs in 2010, they'll need to upgrade here.

And the Gholston of the men in turquoise, Ted Ginn Jr.:

QUOTE
The problem is Ted Ginn Jr., who ranks 77th in DVOA. Ginn is horrible at catching the ball, ranking 75th in catch rate; he is even worse with the ball in his hands, ranking last among all wide receivers with just 0.8 yards after catch per reception. This failure is nothing new for Ginn -- in three years, he has yet to break the top 60 wide receivers in DVOA in any season. It's time to admit that he's a kick returner only and find his replacement.

Edit: NT Jason Ferguson out is also spells doom for Tuna's tunas.

Yeah, a really tough season for the Fins in a lot of ways, from Pennington and Brown's season ending injuries, to Porter and Taylor not being the players they used to be, to heart breaking 2nd half collapses against the Colts and Saints at home.

I would assume that the Dolphins come out frisky and ready to play -- keeping the game close through halftime, perhaps -- but at this point the number of injuries has begun to overwhelm them on both sides of the ball.

Pats are too good not to have a road win yet, are relatively healthy and have typically responded quite well following losses.

I'm going to guess:

Pats: 24
Fins: 13

Kind of the opposite of 2008, when everything went right, from nailing the #1 pick, having Pennington gift wrapped, the return of Brown from injury, the Wildcat, the last place schedule, and no injuries of any consequence.

The always excellent KC Joyner on young secondaries (Insider only - just snipped the Patriots portions):

QUOTE
Vontae Davis, Miami Dolphins
Most rookie cornerbacks who end up in the starting lineup have their seasons go one of two ways. They either play very well early and then have their performance fall off as they hit the rookie wall, or they play badly early on and then improve with on-the-job training.

Davis is an exception in that he hasn't followed either path. After his first six weeks, Davis had allowed 198 yards on 15 pass attempts, or an unacceptable 13.2 YPA total. Over the past five weeks, Davis has given up 425 yards on 39 pass attempts, or an equally unacceptable 10.9 YPA. In addition, teams are noticing that Sean Smith, the other member of the Dolphins' rookie cornerback battery, has an 8.5 YPA overall and an 8.7 mark the past five games and are directing more of their aerial traffic at Davis as a result.

Fantasy impact: The lineup matchup for Week 13 says Davis will face Wes Welker, but the last time out, the Dolphins put Davis on Randy Moss. Since Moss crushed Davis, it would seem unlikely that Miami would do this again, and if they don't, Welker goes from a strong fantasy start to a 12-to-15 point candidate.

Sunday Countdown: Keyshawn Johnson, Cris Carter and Mike Ditka pick the Patriots. Tom Jackson takes the Dolphins.

Bad news. Not just this game but for others the rest of the year. Who knew Vollmer would be one of the more important cogs in the Pats plans.

There haven't been any reports to that effect that I'm aware of. Then again, when a guy misses two games in a row with a head injury, it's easy to be pessimistic.

That's what I mean. Missing 2 games with a head injury is not good news - has to be more than a mild case of concussion. (But no news whatsoever about Vollmer's long-term status.)

Things ease up a bit after MIA. As long as he's ready to go come playoff time it's okay.

Oh, and squish the fish.

@Adam_Schefter
Speculation swirling about Tom Brady's status. He injured a finger Friday. But team not concerned. He's fine and he's playing.

Man, Sunday mornings are the worst.

I'm predicting 3-4 Brady sacks today and 6-7 more pressures. I just hope Porter doesn't attempt to kill him.

Wait, that reminds me...has Porter not said anything this week??

Schefter just said on ESPN2 that Brady's finger injury "isn't as serious as it sounds." I'm not sure what it "sounds" like, since all I've seen is veiled rumors, but I guess that's good news.

Look, I don't care what they do or how they do it. They just need to win. In December, it's not about style points and you know what you have. Defensively, do whatever it takes to shut down their running game and make Henne beat you. Offensively, please ride Maroney and the running game to slow down the pass rush that will be there today without Neal and Vollmer.

I don't care how, just win the ballgame.

Brady's right ring finger is black and blue and he was playing with it a lot during warm-ups while Belichick and O'Brien watched. Simms said he looked like he can get the job done but was not super accurate.

Should be interesting, you'd think they would want to run, but you think they would want Brady in the shotgun.

They just showed his finger. Looks more like he whacked his fingernail on a helmet than a sprain or a break by the bone. He has a bruise at the bottom of the finger.

Thankfully, the ring finger is one of the least important when it comes to throwing.

Just saw that and it didn't exactly inspire a ton of confidence. It'll be interesting to see how they run the offense. You'd think there'd faster developing passes passes and some two TE power running sets. Hopefully, Sammy will be ready for an increased workload as well.

Yeah, for sure. If you're gonna hurt a finger, that's the one.

Losing Neal sucks - I'm honestly tired of people laying into Light and treating Vollmer like some sort of Ryan Clady prodigy, but the line might have some issues with Connolly at RG. That's the bigger problem.

Him too. Kaczur has not played well at all in the past few weeks.

I think the left side of the line is the least of the Pats' problems offensively.

New Orleans offense more dominant than the '07 Pats because they "sit on leads" as opposed to "running up the score"? Someone get that man a box of kleenex.
