This isn't unheard of; it goes against recent trends, but it's not unusual

According to the LoHud blog, the last time a team to reach a world series with only used 3 starters the entire time was the Braves in 92.

The last team to win was the Twins in 91.

A matter of perspective. I think of those years as recent.

I can see them packing it in early if Lee is on and they fall behind.

Assuming Lee pitches a complete game and we don't get the Brad Lidge experience.

I asked a few of my Yankees friends if they would prefer to lose tonight, or at least not win, so they could see their team celebrate at home.

To a person they all said they wanted to win tonight.

2004 left quite a mark.

Completely agree. I really don't want Philadelphia getting any momentum or even entertaining any thoughts about winning this Series.

While I think the Yankees could rough up Pedro in Game 6, he terrifies me because he would love to beat the Yankees in Game 6 in New York.

Pedro Martinez dominating the MFY in Game 6 to force a Game 7 would be too unbelievably incredible to actually happen. Emphasis on unbelievably. It's just not going to happen. If they're lucky, they'll get a win tonight.

I plan on celebrating with rembrat.

We all know Jose Molina will get a big hit tonight. It's just set-up for a reverse lock game.

"The last thing we want is a bench clearing brawl" - Mark Grace

I actually think that would make the world series one of the all time greatest series..especially if it led to a 3 game run by the Phils!

I'd pay money for a brawl tonight. This will never happen, but if ARod gets hit, I'll bet benches empty.

Game 5: To be remembered as "When Girardi put Philly back into the WS."

I still see the possibility of a Game 7...built on the probability of a Game 6.

I guess part of the reason for going with Burnett tonight is you don't want the Phillies to get on track stringing hits together at all if possible, which is a point. I just think baseball players thrive on repetition and familiarity, and Girardi has the opportunity to recreate pretty much the exact same scenario as game 2, Burnett against Pedro on full rest in the Bronx, in which Burnett pitched his best game of the year, easily the best start for any Yankee this series.

Games on three consecutive days means reliever pitch counts becomes a possible factor for probably the first time in the postseason (baseball on three straight days, what a concept!). Girardi says he's thinking 3-4 outs maximum for Rivera, here are some game 3/4 pitch counts:

Marte-15/4
Joba-9/19
Rivera-5/8

Park-14 last night
Madson-22/20
Lidge-30 last night

in his defense, you wouldn't want Big Papi or Youk to say 'nah, the biggest moment in my career already happened' if they were about to play in a game that could clinch another championship.

The problem is that if you use Burnett and lose, then you have to either throw Pettitte on short rest in game 6 OR throw Gaudin in that game. Burnett, Pettitte, and Sabatha (twice) on short rest is a gamble.

OTOH, Gaudin in game 5 with Burnett on full rest in game 6 and Pettitte on full rest in game 7 with CC behind him seems to be a safer strategy, don't you think?

For me, I guess it just comes down to believing that there won't be that much of a drop off in performance on short rest. With Burnett specifically, another reason I think this is the best game for him to start is because you never know what you are going to get mentally from him. He could be awesome. He could totally lose it. He could do both. But with this game at least, there is less pressure on him than there would be for a game 6 or 7. I think that helps him mentally. Burnett is the only guy available who has the pure talent that can match zeros with Lee. Not that he will, of course. But with him there is always that potential.

Pettitte going on short rest doesn't really worry me either. He's left handed, he can control the running game, and he can still pitch when he knows he doesn't have his normal "stuff". I don't worry about Sabathia either. For obvious reasons. We'll see how it all works out, but I say good for Girardi not to give any games away and go for the jugular.
