Both of these teams are significantly inferior to the MFY and have no chance to beat them. That being said, the fact that this pennant race/playoff have created such a clusterfuck may be a good thing. I subscribe to the theory that when you have a big underdog playing a great team, the more variables, the better. I'd almost rather see a battered, rag-tag Twins team limp into Yankee Stadium than a perfectly lined up, but shitty, Tigers team. It mixes things up, lowers the pressure, and may put the Yankees off guard a bit.

I disagree only because of the Verlander Variable. I agree on the odds, but I'll take awesome starters in the playoffs

Verlander will go 8IP 1R 10K and the Tigers will lose when Rodney walks in 2 runs.
At least the Twins have a high leverage closer they can use.
Either way it's going to be ugly.

Well, one of the things it does is create an NFL-like "we don't know if the starting or back-up QB will play" angle for the MFYs to manage. The Tiggers and Twinkies know who they'd play after today and NY only sort of does. It's no big deal for the Yankees, really - not with the $s they spend on advance scouting and other information gathering - but it will require a little bit of cramming for the final. That's even more true if the MFYs take the option of starting their ALDS on the following day. Like you say, it's just another variable they would not face if the AL Cent. had been decided the normal way.

If only Gradyhire knew how to properly deploy him in October.

Well he did us a favor by graciously letting NY win so the Sox could humiliate them.

There are many, many reasons to pick the twins here.
This is one of the few times where you can make a case for a neutral site. Just have them both play in Yankee Stadium(with Minny the effective home team) and the team that wins stays.
It's some good playoff-ish baseball to watch at least.

I think the 10-7 record the twins had over the tigers regular season earned them the right.

Who they'll never get to use because they'll be down by 20 runs each and every game.
Whatever. I've already accepted that the Twins are going to win and that that ALDS will be a bloodbath. I just hope we can avoid a Yankees walkoff. There isn't anything on this earth that I hate more than watching those phony fucks jump around like idiots and Burnett's moronic shaving cream pie.

I think the Twins have got this. The Tigers are going down in flames right now.

I think if they win, the Twins plan is to start Brian Duensing in the first game vs. the MFY, then probably Nick Blackburn in game two, and Baker in game three.

You know what? At that point, why not just pitch Liriano in Game 1? Odds are he'll get torched anyway but unlike Duensing he has a slight chance to pitch a gem.

God forbid Gradyhire use a starting pitcher who can actually break a pane of glass with his fastball.
#26
Posted 06 October 2009 - 03:32 PM
Liriano has been an absolute disaster this year. He'd be a waste of a roster spot.
#27
Posted 06 October 2009 - 03:34 PM
I get that. But Duensing? That's the kind of slop thrower the MFYs kill on a regular basis.
Like I said, Liriano will probably get torched anyway. But he can at least blow away enough batters to have a prayer.

Duensing's average fastball velocity is 91 mph, peaking at around 93 or so.
Liriano's average fastball velocity is ... 91 mph, peaking at around 95 or so.

Totally. If they had any balls they'd run 2 episodes, back-to-back in the 4 o'clock hour of the Steve Harvey Show.

Unless the BABIP gods smile down on him, Duensing has no chance of surviving. His K rate is under six per nine innings as a starter. Anyway, it's a Catch-22 no matter how you look at it.
#32
Posted 06 October 2009 - 03:47 PM
Eh, Duensing's got a .295 BABIP this year, so he hasn't been lucky much at all. His FIP's a bit higher than his ERA (4.10 vs 3.76), but he's got a decent HR rate (0.76). The low strikeout rate is bad, but if he can keep getting groundballs at a good clip, he'll be OK. At the very least, he's not a high flyball pitcher.
But yeah, Duensing or Liriano, it wouldn't really matter. There's no way either is beating Sabathia at Yankee Stadium.

Who can forget last year's ALCS Game 6?

Don't mess up on the technicalities this time! Any idea what team is broadcasting today? Anyway, I know a Tigers fan well, but, go Twins!

Would a Duensing/Sabathia Game 1 set a record for playoff odds?
In all seriousness, what would the Yankees money line (odds of winning outright) be? -700? -800?
(For non-gamblers, these numbers represent how much you have to wager to win $100. So to win $100 by picking the Yankees to win Game 1, you'll have to lay down $700 or something. I've never seen a line that large outside of college football.)

EDIT: also fuck the shitty dome. All the more reason to root for the Tigers. Domes have no business being in October.

I love this post.
When Craig Sager appeared on screen with that purple blazer, I half expected him to turn around and unveil a number 4 on the back and for a game long discussion about Brett Favre to ensue.
