A 7 inning 2 hitter by Byrd, and a 12 run outburst by the Sox. Is that too much to ask?

I keep telling myself that these games are meaningless, but at some level, I'm not so sure. They haven't actually clinched, the Ranger bats are heating up, and I would hate to see meaningful games late next week. The thought of ending the season series with another MFY sweep...it's not a good thing.

Win please.

Lineup: Reddick, Woodward, Youkilis, Varitek, Gathwright, Francona, Anderson, Kottaras, Mills.

Half the team went back to Boston last night, the other half were sent to Anaheim to prepare for the Angels, and nobody on the team has seen Papelbon since they left Kansas City.

Thats what everyone said about the Red Sox vs Angels after losing 8 of 9 in the regular season. The best team does not always win the playoffs, thats why so many WC teams have won the World Series. These 162 games just do not matter if you can make the playoffs, anything can happen then.

Chris Woodward needs to be offered up as a human sacrifice to pay for Francona's lineup sins. First you clinch, then you use your scrubs liberally.

And some meaningless nonsense to get this gamethread back on top...
I'm gonna wear my Yankees suck shirt today. It's bad luck, but screw it, I'm doing it anyway. All the good luck moves don't seem to be working. If the Yankees clinch today and I have to see them doing their little grab ass on the field in front of my team, then I want everyone for the rest of the day to know damn well what a bitter and petty human being I am towards them. Not that many people will care or even notice, but if my small minded gesture can influence that one small child with a lasting memory of what a douchebag I am about the New York Yankees, then I feel the gesture will be worth it.

Unfortunately human sacrifice usually only works if it's not someone we already want to kill.

And let's not forget the fact that Tito isn't exactly rolling out the line-up that he uses when winning is a priority.

That said, I can understand frustration and emotional reactions when losing to the MFYs. All of us get that these games are not exactly do-or-die, but I daresay that losing to these miscreants pisses off even the most stoic, level headed of Sox fans.

Those are Yankee fans gentlemen.

Not that this is the place for it, but there are all sorts of logical problems with your statement. Don't "inferior teams" play "like shit" when they are facing their superiors and look superior when they are facing their inferiors? In other words, the Sox are a very very good team. That's why they'll make the post-season. But this year the Yankees, mostly using money as a weapon, have put together a superior team. I don't know how you can watch these games since Arod came back and made Tex better and since Wake went down and Smoltz and Penny didn't pan out and not come to this conclusion.

Maybe we've seen the Yankees anointed the superior team every year (except 2008) including the two years the Sox won it all. I think the superior minds will chalk it up to another "crapshoot" when the postseason has played out.

But the best team wins more often than not, no? Or have superior minds determined that that's not the case anymore.

Yes, I believe the teams with the better pitching win in the playoffs, which is why the MFY has not won since 2000. I think it is unclear who has the better staff this year which is why the ALCS will be a lot of fun. Hell, I'm not even sure if the Sox will get by the Angels. Three good teams.

I think my biggest concern is the complete inability of a Sox catcher to stop anyone from stealing. (part of this is on the pitchers)
Some may argue that stolen bases are overrated, but when you can't throw anyone out... you're turning bloops into doubles, giving up potential double plays, putting runners in scoring position over and over, and generally looking defeated before the game is even over.
How many bases will the Yanks steal today? +/- 5?''

Sorry for this "morass of negativity".
Enjoy the game.

Today's lineup has more to do with resting Martinez than playing Varitek. Yes - Martinez is a marginally better hitter LH and Tek is a questionably better hitter RH - but that is only taking advantage of the occasion. All regulars will be given one or more days off during these last days. Of course - there is that small matter of lowering the magic number from 3 to 0. Probably today won't be a clear step in that direction, if only because of the rain and the Byrd.

No shit!
Here's a situation where you have a catcher who is either too old or worn out to be anything but horrible... and so you start him (for the 2nd time in 3 days) over a young catcher who could probably use the at-bats. WTF

It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that game.
