Imagine if both Texas and the Sox get swept. That would leave the Yankees and Sox celebrating on the same night, which would be a bit...strange.

Celebrating a playoff berth after a loss is like kissing your sister.

What happens if the Sox sweep the Yankees this weekend (and Texas sweeps) so that the Sox clinch the WC on Sunday and are also within reach of the division (2.5 back)? Do the Sox celebrate the WC clinch (the Yankees didn't) or remain stoic in their quest for the division? The Sox would pretty much have to win out and hope the Yankees lose two more. Crazy long shot at this point, but within the realm of possibility if the sweep were to occur.

Well, a brawl might be fun as long as no one on our team got hurt. Both the Sox and Yanks know that they are almost assured a playoff spot, so anyone who gets suspended for 5-8 games at this point will just be really fresh for the post-season, unless there is some obscure, late season suspension rules that I don't know about.

I want to see the impossible. I want to see J.D. Drew get so emotional that he charges the mound. Absolute Dutch fugue, blacks-out-and-wakes-up-in-a-pool-of-blood-but-isn't-injured mad.

You want players suspended to start the 2010 season?

How about there's no fights and no injuries and the Sox head into October confident and ready.

Wait, there are 11 games left, how would a standard 5-8 game suspension force anyone to miss the beginning of 2010? I am not advocating that our players go out looking for blood, but I was responding to a comment about the possibility of Girardi head-hunting with Joba, in which case I have no problem with a bit of a dust-up, if only to see Jeter cowering.

The Yankees lead the league in hit batters, and have hit 10 Red Sox hitters this season. Bay has been hit three times. This would be a great time to get a little payback for all those other incidents this season, and the Yankees aren't likely to retaliate since a few of their players just got done serving their suspensions from the Toronto brawl.

So I just asked this question to Amy Nelson on her ESPNBoston.com chat, and got an interesting response...

Ryan (Boston) Amy, any chance we see some fireworks tonight? NY has hit 10 Boston batters and we have yet to see any retaliation.

Amy K. Nelson: Great question ... Red Sox players were, um, very upset last series in NY...one player told me he expected retaliation and it never came, in large part because of how the series went. Not sure, there's a lot still these teams need to accomplish, but I can tell you this: Red Sox are relishing chance to celebrate at Yankee Stadium and they will tear that place apart, if they do it on Sat, wonder if we'll see any repercussions in Sunday's game?

Interesting option tonight from ESPN streak for the cash: Subtract Jeter fist pumps tonight from Joba fist pumps and multiply by # number of Jeterian references thrown out in the broadcast from the 4th through 7th innings.

Speaking of HBP, this is interesting, from Gammons:

QUOTE
"We really want to keep things the way they are, and keep going the way we have all season," says Francona, whose two World Series rings are a testament to his October preparation. "I'll give some days off. I'll rest Mike Lowell a day or two to keep him fresh. I'll give Youk Friday off in New York."

Do we have an idea on how limited Stinky is in terms of innings/pitch count? I'm assuming they are still tapering him for the playoffs, despite the recent comments about him fighting with Gaudin. Or are they just going to let him loose and get going if he pitches well?

Yankees Universe™ pissed on the ashes of the revisionist Joba Rules once they decided on rebuilding Fisty McPumperson in the 2nd half. Pitch counts are folly - he throws way too many pitches per start so often foils the best laid plans. From the LoHud Blog's pre-game notes:
QUOTE
The Yankees are hoping to get him to six innings tonight. Then again they were hoping to get him to five against Seattle.

If Joba's going to drill guys that hit him well, he may not get through the Sox lineup more than once:

Jason Bay = 4-7, 1 HR
Mike Lowell = 7-15, 1 HR
Pedroia = 8-15, 1 HR
Victor Martinez = 3-6, 1 HR
FWIW: Youkilis is 2-7 but with 7 BB's against JtC.

Stock up on the K-Y. You'll be busy. Varitek wont be.

A quick review suggests that in non-Wakefield starts, the backup catcher has about 3 total AB's and about 5 innings behind the plate in the Francona playoff era (roughly 40 playoff games). Francona also pinch-hit for Varitek at least twice last year vs. TB.
