Eck is basically calling Steve Phillips an idiot for saying the 2009 Red Sox don't have home run power. It's awesome.

I guess that would mean only 3 teams in the league have home run power then. (FTR: Philly, Texas and NYY---Sox are 4th. Yeah park effects!!!!)

Of course, how much excuse do you need to call Steve Phillips an idiot?

What?

5 20+ HR hitters and a 6th that could break the threshold by the end of the season don't qualify?

Does the guy even watch the game?

Not to mention someone knocking on the door of 40.

Phillips should be banned from talking, but we all know this already.

Yeah I don't know if the dude checks things before he talks, but whatever. He's a dipshit.

They don't have a single guy who's a terror to hit one in every at bat (I don't think Bay quite gets to that level) but I'd rather a pitcher have to worry about 6 guys in our lineup with a reasonable shot at going deep than have just one dude who he can pitch around.

Tangential to the Phillips comment, Joe Morgan during the Giants game last night said that the NL Cy Young race is a dead heat between Wainwright and Lincecum, but in his mind the edge goes to Wainwright because he is more of a horse and puts up more innings, making him more valuable.

Wainwright has pitched eight more innings in two more starts than Lincecum. Eight innings.

Carry on.

Amazing what not having that one feared bruiser (ie Manny) who gets all the press in lieu of a whole team of solid hitters can do to the superficial baseball analyst.

There are only two players in the AL who have more HR's than Bay.

196 homeruns on the season for this team with 11 games still to play. The '09 team will easily surpass the 200 mark, which has only been done six other times in the franchise's history. They won't catch the '03, '04 teams or set any new records, but this will end up being one of the best homerun hitting Red Sox teams of all time.

Fair enough, but he's not the sort of 50+ per year guy who absolutely gives a pitcher an ulcer every time he comes to the plate.

Granted, there's a pretty strong case to be made that that's a result of the end of the steroid era, and that those guys are gonna become a lot more sparse. It's not to denigrate Bay; just saying.

They're giving the first 10,000 gals free t-shirts. Surprising, as Oakland just had a lawsuit with some similar gender related gimmick when they refused to give a guy whatever it is was they were giving the ladies.

Buchholz has thrown some beautiful pitches: a wicked sinker for a foul tip and several well-placed sliders. Also, one 97 meatball four-seamer.

Buchholz has thrown three sliders: two for called strikes and one for a double play ball (or would have been, had Pedroia not covered 2nd). What's not to like about that?

Did Martinez just signal to the ump the pitch was coming inside, by tapping him on the knee and moving over to the inside part of the plate. I've never seen that one before.

The sliders (Im assuming thats what they were, they were 88 mph) looked like backup sliders he hung to Butler and he fortunately took.

I loved that 97 mph Maddux-like fastball for the K though

Edit: Maddux like in movement, not velocity of course

Well, it finally happened. Buchholz had men on first and third with one out, and I felt confident that he was going to get out of it without allowing a run. Lately, I have been able to believe that he was a guy who could avoid the big innings that used to plague him, but I actually wasn't that worried at all just now. Great job.

That slider to Butler had him buckling out of the way. When Buchholz can throw that pitch for a strike, it's a very useful brushback slider. It looked high in the zone, but batters will have a tough time making good contact on that pitch.
