Lester is pitching. Many SOSHers will be there. All will be nice and hammered.

I fully expect business to be taken care of.

edit: Of course Lester will not be hammered. He'll be the opposite of that.

I was there last night. During BP, Tek was out in the bullpen doing defensive drills. He'd crouch behind the plate, they'd throw to him, and he'd practice jumping into position to throw to second.

I laughed out loud.

Let's keep 'em off base so I don't have to see the live version of that.

Yes, god help us that the Red Sox practice their defense.

Too bad you didn't get to see infield drills, you might have laughed so hard milk would come out of your nose.

Yaz, I get it. I really do. I was just struck by the futility of it all.

And I did watch the infield drills. And it was funnier than you might think. Francona was hitting grounders to Ino Guerrero, who at one point ended up laid out flat on his face. After a split second of making sure he was okay, Lowrie lost it:

Jon Lester against David Hernandez. Let's see...
Jon Lester hasn't lost a game in two months. The Red Sox haven't lost a game he started in over a month. He hasn't not made it through at least the fifth inning in a start since May 9th, and he hasn't pitched less than six innings in a start since July 30th. His ERA last month was 2.41. His ERA this month is 0.86(!). He hasn't surrendered more than four earned runs in a start since May 26th. For at least the last month and a half, Lester has been the best left handed pitcher in all of baseball. Maybe one of the three best pitchers in all of baseball, left or right.
I call eight innings, one run. Unearned. Probably on a passed ball.
David Hernandez has given up at least five runs in his last three starts, none of which did he make it to the sixth inning. This includes giving up six runs to Boston in 2.2 innings last week. Neither he or his team have won a game he started in over a month. In that span since his last win his ERA has gone up 1.20, from 4.20 to 5.40. In September alone his ERA is 13.40(!). Lefties have a .884 OPS against him. Righties are .967. At home for everyone its 1.023(!!!).
This kid has no business being on a major league roster right now.
But, I'll cut him some slack. I say he makes it to the third inning. And only gives up five runs.

Not meaningful at all, but here's some fun with small samples:

JD Drew, 2009, batting 8th. 32 PA: .407/.500/1.111/1.611

Drew has 6 of his 20 HR from the 8 hole.

So yeah, win.

Edited to add,

Also: The 'so and so whom the Sox DFA'd went to another team and succeeded' crowd could use a gander at Brad Penny's line against the Dodgers today. Through 1.0, 3 5 5 2 0, in 33 pitches.

I think that means it will happen. If it wasn't, Tito would probalby say so and use the opportunity to give Tek a vote of confidence. The fact that he didn't say anything means they probably are gonna start Beckett with VMart, he just isn't gonna express a lack of confidence in Tek by saying it.

I don't think the Tiger's chances would be minuscule. With three power arms, their chances are actually pretty good, all things considered. They certainly wouldn't be favored, but a series win wouldn't exactly be a shock, either. People forget how zany the playoffs can be.
