Should Varitek make the playoff roster at this point?

There is literally nothing that he adds.

Martinez needs to catch Beckett for his remaining 3 starts so that Josh can get acclimated to throwing to him. Simply put, Varitek will cost this team playoff games in a variety of ways if he is allowed to play at all.

I think it has to do with these #'s:

- Fuentes vs. LHB: 65 ab, 0 hr, .292 slg
- Fuentes vs. RHB: 123 ab, 6 hr, .463 slg

- Drew vs. LHP: 104 ab, 5 hr, .452 slg
- Baldelli vs. LHP: 86 ab, 4 hr, .453 slg

So maybe Drew and Baldelli are the same vs. LHP, but Fuentes is MUCH worse against RHB. So it makes some sense. Didn't work out, but he was playing the percentages there.

So then why not Baldelli for Ortiz and then Youks for Drew? Or Youks first to draw a walk. Playoff Tito was asleep.

No. Ortiz was having a bad game, but David Ortiz in his worst early-season slump was not as bad as Varitek has been since July.

David Ortiz is the team's DH hitting fifth and he is hitting about 20 points higher than Varitek. That should tell you all you need to know right there. If Ortiz was having a respectable season (not even a good one) and DiceK showed up for his job in shape this team would be in first place.

Pinch "hitting" with Nick Green takes the cake in my book. Worked out well due to pure luck and poor umpiring, but Tito has not distinguished himself in this series.

Its almost like he is trying to get into "playoff-mode", and be more aggressive. But he isn't quite there, and is forgetting which buttons to press.

He may have been doing his best to avoid getting caught up in a race with the MFY for the division, preferring to coast into the WC spot and rest the boys. Until tonight, with the Red Sox were only 5 games behind in the loss column, and his efforts failed. Now we are down 6 games in the loss column.

Fortunately the upcoming road trip is against KC and baltimore. As bad as the team is on the road, they can't help but winning 5 of 7 while the MFY go west and play Seattle and the Angels on the road. I can't wait to see the lineups as Tito does his best to avoid gaining ground before the MFY series.

WTF are you talking about? Over the last 28 days he's put up a .299/.393/.571 line. For the season he's getting on base at a .385 clip. Do you even bother to look up these numbers before you post or are you just being reactionary and basing this on a few games you've watched recently.
