9/15: Halladay vs. Mitre

Melky sits in favor of Gardner, the rest of the lineup is intact. NY has a six game lead on Boston in the loss column with 17 to play, which is comfortable but also still potentially squanderable despite no one seeming to think that's possible, they need to keep winning games (or Boston needs to lose some, either way).

Not to get ahead of myself, but I'm (pleasantly) surprised already at the number of hits and the 2 runs. Odds of Mitre giving up fewer than 2......?

Been talking about it in the Sox thread. Essentially, Carlson threw behind Posada, Posada got pissed but nothing happened. He draws a walk and eventually scores. As he crosses home plate, he clips Carlson with an elbow, Carlson shouts at him (looked like "fuck you!" or something close to it), and Posada flips out and charges him. Lots of punches thrown, probably a substantial suspension for Posada.

Carlson threw BEHIND Posada (Possible payback for Hill getting hit) and benches clear but nothing happens. Later.. Posada ends up on base and scores. After scoring he runs past carlson and bumps him. Carlson whirls and says Fuck you... etc etc..
All hell breaks loose.

You forgot that Melancon drilled Hill the inning before Carlson threw at Posada.

in retaliation for Hill getting nailed in the back in the top of the inning.

Is this a parody or intentionally off? Because that's really not how it happened at all.

Yeah, I was only talking about this half of the inning. Didn't see the Hill HBP, so I didn't feel comfortable commenting on it. Tough to say if it was intentional without any context... though Kay insists that it wasn't so it probably was.

Yeah, Posada actually pulled a knife on Carlson.

He loves his pitchers to throw at people, he probably secretly loves that he has a pitcher who in a short period of time has become known as the premier head hunter in the game, going after big time players in the division like Youkilis and Longoria.
And then you see him in the middle of this scrum immediately as if someone DARED challenge his team in a beaning contest. His comments after Penny finally beaned someone after Boston hitters had been hammered by Yankee pitching over the first two months of the year were comical. He has lost all semblance of reality.
Regardless of whether or not Hill was drilled on purpose, I have no doubt it is Girardi's reputation which makes opposing managers such as Cito or others thinking the instructions come fast and furioius from Girardi. He's just lucky he hasn't really run into a pitcher yet who has done a good job of squaring up on his all-star hitters.

Back under .500 since Jeterian broke Lou's record.

I'm no MFY apologist but I didn't think Posada threw an elbow at his head. Carlson was also out of position. He made it easy to have a close encounter with Posada. My take is they were itching for eachother.
This too will pass.

A right to the space? Sure. A right to make contact with Carlson? Not at all.

He and Tex have trouble sometimes too, he covers a lot of ground and doesn't seem to communicate so well on the way.

This all could have been prevented if Posada had taken the ball that didn't hit him and wasn't at his head and moved on. He should know by now that the reputation of his manager and some of his pitchers is going to cause retaliation when someone like Aaron Hill is hit in a game that the Jays are pounding the Yankees.
It's the Girardi WayTM

I didn't see a great replay angle, but it looked as if Carlson was pretty much right on the plate. Under the circumstances, and especially if he said something (no idea), Carlson is at least as much at fault IMO, that's all I'm saying. I would give them equal suspensions, maybe 3 games.

I'm pretty sure he's responsible for Girardi's swollen eye, lol.

I'd guess more for Posada. Carlson wasn't on top of the plate, but he was still closer than he should have been while backing up the play. Posada had to reach slightly to get his elbow to him and was clearly trying to start a confrontation. Carlson probably wasn't too disappointed that it started either.
Posada will get at least as many games as Youkilis got for charging the mound, if not more.

Nothing was said by Carlson. You'll see when you watch the replay again.
