Week 2 - Pats at Jets: He's baaaaacccccckkkkk!

Most astute Pats fans knew that this season was going to be a struggle on defense. With all these new faces, it will take some time for this team to gel. Nobody however, predicted a struggle on the other side of the ball. I'm chalking last night up as good ole-fashioned rust for Brady with the offense; He hadn't played a full game since February 2008. He did still come through when it counted - which is all that matters.
Other than the Mayo injury, last night was almost the perfect outcome for BB. He gets the much-coveted home divisional win, yet has all the ammo to take his team down a peg after their lofty pre-season projections. For this reason, I think the Pats will roll on Sunday.
We've seen it all too many times during the Belichick era: A very strong game that comes right after a stinker.

We won't see the drops and mental mistakes that we saw last night. With all the talk about the defense from last night, when the offense starts turning drives into points, it will really cover up a lot of those problems.

Skrub.
Skrub.
Not only with the Patriots not score 40 points, they won't score 30. And I am willing to place a wager on this with you. Someone is going to be getting as free dinner at a nice resturant.
*In case anyone doesn't know, I'm a Jets fan.
What the Jets did on Sunday was fucking brilliant. Sure, I am in the same boat that think the Texans got a little too much hype this year and Matt Schaub is unproven but they were swarming and nasty. Plus, they get Shaun Ellis back for this game. So, on paper the defense got even better.
They are going to come at Brady and just keep coming. The Pats OL looked pretty lousy last night and if they play to that same level on Sunday, Brady is going to spend more time on the Meadowland turf than Dennis Byrd.
So there you go Skrub. The gauntlet had been thrown my friend.
Dinner and drinks at a resturant of the winner's choice.
Pats are going to be in for a world of hurt on Sunday and I am not so sure a lot of Patriot fans are going to see it coming.

I don't think Wes drops those balls this time. And I don't expect the Pats defensive to refuse to accept gift-wrapped interceptions. And I do hope to see Maroney take Gholston in the flat.
And I do expect to see more of this:
Go Pats.

Most of it should burn off 5 mins into the game, but the O-line -- Light especially -- would be well advised to get their heads and asses wired together.
So as the Jets prepare to play the Patriots, it's noteworthy to mention that they're treating the game to be played on the second Sunday of the regular season like the game that will be played on the first Sunday of February.
''We're going to be playing this game like it's the Super Bowl," said defensive tackle Kris Jenkins on Monday, according to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger.
"This is a statement year," Jenkins added. "Not just for Rex. It's a statement year for this team. We're trying to set a precedent here of what is to come for this organization and that's something we're not taking lightly.''
So get ready. Though the calendar says the Super Bowl will be played on February 7, the Jets think that it's happening on September 20.
And if they can't beat the Pats at home, it might be the closest the Jets will get to the real thing.

Houston was 3rd in the league in yards per game last year. I wouldn't say they're 100 steps below the Pats' offense.

Q: Are many Jets fans genetically unpleasant people?
My own prediction is 23-17, Jets. Sadly. Seems like a natural trend, which will be followed by a solid Patriot win in the second game, one that will clinch NE winning the division at that time. I feel like I can write the headlines now. Hopefully, Skrub proves prescient, and I wrong.

"We need our fans," Ryan said Monday. "We need our fans to show up. Our team is going to show up [and] we need our fans to show up. We need to be loud and make it miserable on them."
Well, Ryan has rolled up his sleeves in an effort to get as many sets of vocal cords into the venue as possible.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, every Jets season-ticket holder received a voice message from Ryan. Here's what it said:
"Hey this is Rex Ryan, the head coach of the New York Jets. I just wanted to let you know how much we need you this week. I've already admitted that the Patriots have a better head coach and they have a better quarterback than us. But we're going to see who has the better team.
"The other part that I'm confident in is, they've got to face you and they've got to face the rest of our fans. My challenge to you is that we need you at your best. So get ready to go for four quarters, get after them, especially when our defense is up there, we really need you. We want it to be miserable for Brady and company and seem like there are 13 or 14 guys out there on defense. It's tough enough when there's 11. But when our fans are into it, it's almost impossible to do anything against us.
"That's my challenge to you. Again, I admit I'm not as good as Belichick, but at the end of the game, I want to be 1-0 against him. So help me out if you don't mind. That's my challenge, OK? Thank you. Bye."
Though we've been critical of some of the things that Ryan has said and done, there's something about this specific development that we like.
Either way, the college football/pro wrestling dynamic that Ryan has introduced to his team's top rivalry means that Sunday's game will be even more compelling than it otherwise would have been.

This is pure gold, Jerry. I hope Ryan gets the same return on his words as this guy will on Saturday.

Not if had a "lack of evidence beyond a reasonable doubt." Besides, she engaged willingly in other conduct, such as kissing on the bed. I don't think that makes right at all (especially because she did not approve of him going further with her; she's right to have a case there; I'd actually defend her more over Mark), it's just that this incident was a little sticky, anyway, and not just on Sanchez's part. I know this type of the thing happens to some athletes, this one just gives me mixed feelings. (You should also note I fully disapprove of Kobe's similar actions- don't call me a racist. Kobe's case just sounds more plausible.)
----
Seriously, that's some loser behavior there by Rex. I do think (obviously) BB is a better coach, but, to put that on that message? Pathetic, yet wildly hilarious. It just made my day.

Pats fan here, and I think whoever said they lose this one and then win the second soundly is spot on. It's not how you start the season but how you end it, and I don't think we're firing on all cylinders yet. Enjoy the win Jets fans, it won't mean much at the end of the season.

The Pats need some time, but you're completely buying into what the Jets did with a new coach, rookie QB, etc? You have to expect growing pains, and their first big divisional game, and against BB, would seem to be a time for struggles.

I love it. When Slater goes down with his arm looking like its broken in half I assume wow he's lucky, IR for the year and he gets a shot next year. Somehow he makes the roster and practices a week later like he's Superman. Meanwhile Mayo rolls an ankle seemingly and gets 6-8. Crable can't lace up his shoes without going on IR. Nice luck.

I was thinking the exact same thing; Mayo was walking around just after the injury and looked fine while Slater looked cooked. Now Slater is practiing and Mayo is done for a while, hopefully not for as long as 8 weeks.
Regardless, I think the Pats win because Sanchez will be facing a BB defense for the first time, and he will get very confused at points. The kid got some lucky breaks last week with some very bad throws, and he may not be so lucky this time.

Brady says it's important, but not the Super Bowl, which gets played in Feb -- and game on:
"Talk is cheap," the quarterback said Wednesday with a smile.

Also there is a great little nugget in there about how the Pats have not lost a regular season game that Brady has started since 12/06. The Jets D is very good, but #12 and this offense is not so bad either- I believe at the end of the day the Pats defense needs to come up with no more than 3 stops and the Pats win. It will be interesting to see if the Pats use an extra lineman again to combat the blitz, or if they spread them out and pick them apart underneath. I believe we could se a bunch of Moss in motion and playing out of the slot in this game. I would not be surprised to see this become a ball control game with the Pats short passing game, and the Jets trying to run the ball- I dont think either team will have a bunch of possessions at the end of this one. My prediction Pats 24-13.

Pats win this game handily.
Belichick said yesterday that if you're playing Ryan, you're playing Baltimore's defense. Hyperbole in terms of the quality of personnel, almost certainly, but in terms of the basic approach, right on.
This is how Brady has fared in two career games vs the Ravens. Winning efforts, solid enough, but unspectacular. Completion percentage 50 or below, passer rating in the 70 range, not a lot of picks or TDs.

Wow. And he's a player that has always has a good relationship with BB. Rexy et al. are talking a big game--if they lose, especially if they lose badly, things could get pretty ugly over there.

Being a Jets fan is an infection; it's not genetic.
Oh come on--does anybody really think this won't work?
I have every confidence that all over northern New Jersey potato chip crumbs and empty cans of Milwaukee's Best were strewn about as Jets fans sat bolt upright from the squalor of their couches exclaiming, "Coach needs me!!" and proceeded to jump into their IROC-Zs, peel out humming "na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na," mullet flapping in the breeze, squeal to a halt in front of their buddies' houses shouting, "Mike! Quick! Get in! We gotta get to the mall and buy Sanchez jerseys and plastic construction worker helmets stat!!"

When will other teams get it? Between these idiots shooting their mouths off and the line opening at 6.5 and moving to 3.5, I'm going to bury the pats this weekend, hopefully the public keeps loading on the Jets and that line moves more.
FYI, lines moving more than 3 points last week were 4-1 when you bet the other way. Fade the public my friends.
But ya about the game, I don't see the Jets stopping all the Pats weapons for 4 quarters, something in the 24-14 range seems likely for the boys this weekend.

Eh.
It's the second week of the season and it's kind of a stupid practice anyway.
I do think the following:
-The Pats won't score 30+ points and I made a bet with Skrub who disagrees.
-The Pats defense is not very good and the Jets offense is just OK. I am interested in seeing how the Pats deal with the Jets running game which is pretty damn good after facing the Bills running game which is pretty fucking horrible.
-The Patriots are going to have a very difficult time protecting Brady.
If someone put a gun to my head:
Jets 27
Pats 21

24-13 Pats
I think it will be a relatively uneventful game, despite all of the bluster leading into it. The Jets will never really threaten, but the score will be close enough that they're one big play away from winning it. They won't make that play and the Pats will pull away late.
I disagree with the logic of the poster who said that the Pats will lose this game, then win the second one. I don't think this Jets team is ready for primetime quite yet, but I think they will get better as the season progresses.
You have to think that the Pats will play better than they did on Monday. They have a full week to prepare without Mayo, whereas they had to change their whole defensive scheme in the 1st quarter against Buffalo. I also find it hard to believe that the offense will come out looking like they're stoned again. I foresee the Pats using lots of screens, draws, and short passes early on to slow down the pass rush, then they'll attack deep when they have the time to do so. Of course, it's entirely possible, maybe even likely, that the Jets anticipate this as well. So maybe the Pats come out firing long, figuring the Jets will defend the short passing game NE used last week. Blessed glory, football is back. Let the headgames begin (continue?).
It will be a long day at work on Sunday while I wait to watch this on DVR. Like it or lump it, Ryan and the Jets' trash talk has upped the ante on this one. As much as I think their antics have been laughable, it makes for entertaining television. CBS is loving it every time someone on the Jets opens up their mouth.
