Okay, a walk, but a walk with a swinging strike. That is compatible with either 2008 or 2009 Daisuke.

Same old Dice K. Same old Varitek. Glad we have both V-Mart and Youk on the bench after a day off...

Yeah, Varitek needs to be taken out back and shot.

Figgins is going to be on third in two pitches.

Youk was at MGH this afternoon with back spasms. Martinez is in Cleveland dealing with a family issue.

And bailed out by the fact that Vlad has the pitch recognition skills of an infant.

I can really understand why Francona has such barely disguised contempt for Matsuzaka.

OK, so he didn't walk the bases loaded, and yes there was some nibbling, but for Dice-K, this was pounding the strike zone.

I think I've spotted a trend with Dice K. Has anyone noticed that he has a tendency, after getting up in the count, to throw balls off the plate. It seems to lead to higher pitch counts and to extra baserunners. I think if he were to fix this, he could be a decent pitcher.

I think most people would agree that 2008 Daisuke would be the best number four pitcher in baseball. So if he's anywhere near there, that would be a great thing.

Some wild movement, sometimes just plain wild. His command is just as bad as ever, as far as I can see, but he used both the cutter and the slurve as out pitches. His velocity declined through the inning, not increasing -- that's unusual. Maybe he was overthrowing from nervousness, and self-corrected, but it bears watching. So far more 2008 than 2009 (crosses fingers).

He showed outstanding plate discipline, but in the end the pitch was just too good to take. He hit a shot about 280 feet short of the warning track. Just missed it.
