Maybe he just wasn't feeling the fastball during warmups?

Perhaps. Don't get me wrong- I'm loving the results. It just reminds me of pre-meltdown Buchholz. No matter how good his offspeed stuff is, he still needs to throw the fastball...

http://brooksbasebal...mp;prevDate=913

17 fastballs against 19 offspeed, or 18 fastballs including 2 seamers, 18 offspeed. That's actually more fastballs than I thought.

I do love seeing Clay not panic on the plays he has to make. Awesome play there.

yeah, it's kind of like dropping a pop-up with two outs in the ninth and the winning run on base.

Edit: should add a smile.gif or something

Oh, I am the worst fan of all, trust me. How about losing a game because you score but miss 3rd base! (Ryan Church)

So far he "looks" (gameday) pretty damn good. I'm curious to see what kind of a pitcher he can become
if he is allowed to use his curveball more. So far, with the change-up working, he is damn near unbeatable.

I'm loving Clay's stuff today, but he seems to be up to his old tricks- all offspeed stuff. worrying, or just part of the game plan?

I'm loving Clay's fielding today -- very poised, and he's not falling off the mound to the 1B side.

18 fastballs, 18 offspeed: looks like a good mix for him so far, although he's gotten some stingy treatment from the umpire.

Its even better than his 8/29 change up so far.

When Buch isnt spazzing out he really is very athletic

Just saw this at rotoworld.com:
"Bob Elliot of the Toronto Sun reports that the Red Sox offered the Blue Jays six pitchers for Roy Halladay at the trading deadline.
The names: Daniel Bard, Michael Bowden, Clay Buchholz, Felix Doubront, Nick Hagadone and Justin Masterson. That's quite an impressive array of names, and it's shocking Toronto didn't snap it up. The scout that revealed this deal said the Jays had difficulty projecting Masterson's future, and -- probably most important --- "the Jays were worried about Halladay beating them next year." Obviously, Masterson and Hagadone are no longer with the Sox club so it's unlikely a deal could be reached in the offseason. If it's going to take more than that package to land Halladay, GM J.P. Ricciardi won't find any takers."

Holy smokes. Bard, Bowden, Buchholz, etc., for Halladay? I think Halladay is great, but Clay has been great, Bard is a stud, and moving Masterson/Hagadone allowed us to get VMart. So, in other words, I'm *really* glad that JP didn't take that offer.

I agree. If there is ever a pitcher who should only be throwing his fastball about half the time it's Clay. Its not a bad pitch, but with 3 other good offspeed pitches, he is not pitching to his strengths if he throws 60-70% fastballs. I think the 50/50 ratio is just about right where he should be.

Awfully rare to see three consecutive called strikes in the same at-bat. Crawford must have been sitting on something offspeed.

When those multiple media reports contradict the notion that two major-league GMs (one of whom we have good reason to believe is actually good at his job) have even 0.00001% of the mental capacity required to do the job, then no, I don't believe them. Not to mention that those multiple media reports are probably all ultimately based on the same source, and the fact that all kinds of BS regarding trade discussions gets floated every year.....

No, that's just one media source. Usually in the case of real info, you get multiple media outlets reporting from primary sources.

Notice the difference between CNN stories about breaking news that say "The AP is reporting that...." vs. "CNN confirms that....".

Agreed. This has to be a game of "telephone" where by the end of the communication stream, it became "everyone for Halladay." I see all of those names being in the back-and-forths, or even a Theo menu of "pick any 4-5 of these six," but the fact that there are no position players makes me skeptical that this is valid.

I also agree that Scutaro or someone else had to have been coming back for this to be half-baked noise, instead of utter horseshit.

Exactly. So probably some idiot executive somewhere in the league either misunderstood something, or embellished it because he enjoys telling stories.

I guess it's remotely possible that Theo said something like: "you can have three pitchers - either Buchholz or Bard, either Masterson or Bowden, and either Hagadone or Doubront" and this got wildly exaggerated somewhere along the line to the point that all six pitchers were being offered.

FTR, I still think that would be a stupid offer for Theo to make and JP to reject, but at least it's remotely within the realm of possibility.

I guess it was because they had pretty good pitching depth in their organization, and really needed a bat. Still a bad deal, since they pretty clearly overrated Young, but I think that was the thought process.

Right . . . but for example CNN can talk to person X and get a story. And then Fox can also hear from person X and get the same info, they have both confirmed the story independently.

For example, Peter Gammons and Ken Rosenthal can talk to the same front office person and get a story. It's still form one source, but they arent just reporting that another media outlet has a story.

Clay is working very quickly on the mound. He's got a good pace going on.

I remember a lot of people earlier in the year when he was struggling saying that he needed to increase his pace like Lester did when he finally put it all together.

Well now Clay is dealing, and he's moving along pretty quickly.

So is he pitching well because he's moving quickly, or is he moving quickly because he's pitching well?
