Tito stole an inning there.

Who closes the night? Crawford-Longoria-Zobrist

I say Wagner, with Bard throwing

And is therefore affecting Ells' throwing arm?

I thought we were talking about the WP. Although, I could see Varitek's blackhole of suck affecting other players.

The real problem was Ellsbury misread that ball and because of that was still moving backward when he made the throw.

Lester's WPA this game: .469. Well done, Jon.

I don't get this. Do people really think that Penny is capable of putting up similar numbers in the AL East?

The Burrell signing looked like a safe move for the Rays, but it really hamstrung them - especially coupled with the emergence of Edwin Jackson for DET. With an injured and ineffective Kazmir for most of the season, Andy Sonnanstine and the bullpen falling back to earth, and the inconsistent rookie season by David Price... there were other injuries (Longoria, Pena) but in a way they were already playing from behind because of their pitching.

Wow, Bay hit a homer

a)off a slider
b) to right field.

I'm impressed. It seems like 90% of his long balls are fastballs to straight center.

This is true, and I certainly think Penny has made some improvements in his approach since leaving Boston... but I still don't think he'd be any better than what we have in our rotation right now, and he certainly wouldn't have made the rotation for the playoffs. So I don't see the point in lamenting his success in the NL. Hell, he even praised the Sox and their conditioning and strengthening program as part of the reason he's having success right now.

He's put up good starts against the Phillies and Dodgers. Both are lineups that can compete in the AL. So I'll grant you that he's fixed something that wasn't working for him here... but he certainly wasn't going to pitch like that in Boston. So I don't see the need for sour grapes.

I have completely enjoyed the the air of hopelessness from TB's announcers this series. Absolutely glorious. The piece de resistance was the Bay HR. Their tones had disgust and agony all wrapped into a few words.
