He looked 68 when he played for the Expos. I just always assumed he was AARP material a long time ago.

Why is everyone so certain that Mauer is going anywhere? Twins new stadium means better cash flow, Mauer is from Minnesota (does he still wear his little league Twins helmet in games? I read that somewhere a while ago), and if there was ever the prototype of the guy a small market team holds on to like grim death, no matter what it costs, it would be Joe Mauer.

I mean, that's pretty much what we've done since 2003.

Some minor league experts question whether he can stay behind the plate defensively.
And the ump gives Floyd a 22 inch wide plate against Kotchman!

I look forward to the posts about how Mauer of course would have been ours had Theo bid $0.45 more.

I agree with you. But if he does go to the highest bidder it won't be the Sox. He'll either be a Twin or a yankme

Really, there havn't BEEN that many big ticket FA's since 2003. When the Sox gave Manny a huge contract, well, Manny turned into a hall of famer at least. Anyone see Teixeira getting into the hall of fame?

I'm not convinced the Sox lose the bidding war.
Mauer is perhaps a once in a decade FA - young, high offense at a defensive position, HOF candidate if he keeps it up. It's like ARod when he went to TEX. The Sox broke the bank for Matzusaka thinking it was a situation like this. They were wrong about him, but probably wouldn't be about Mauer. The big question is his health going forward.

Yep, and a buyout of 2 million.
From my FA SP listing post: $8.5MM club option with a $2MM buyout
I don't think the D-Backs pick it up, but two teams that I think might want him are dem Bums and the Cards. Of course, that's another discussion.

Theo just needs a guy who is going to make 30 starts with an above average ERA. Prototypical #3 starter. This season he had plenty of depth behind his starters...he had to use all of it and then some, but the team could absorb some injury/ineffectiveness. Next year the depth isn't going to be nearly as strong. There likely won't be a swingman in the pen like Masterson, there likely won't be a Buchholz blowing away AAA hitters forcing his way up.
Why did Tito PH a lefty? Hasn't Floyd been dominating lefties today with his cutter?

If he keeps up his pace, he's going to have 500-550 homers in 8 years. And that will put him in the hall. I wouldn't say it's a guarantee, but it's not out of the question considering the new toilet.

When he fires Shapiro and switches to Boras, you'll know that a deal with the Yankees has been set.

Plus he's got wildly overrated defense. Every time he doesn't fall on his face for the next 8 years the bizarrely provincial ny press will gasp in awe.

The inflated numbers he puts up in that banbox, coupled with the gold glove level firstbase he plays make it a probability if he stays healthy.

Can you imagine the hurt that it would put on the community in the twin cities if he left? Think LeBron leaving Cleveland for the Knicks. With Boras it's ALWAYS about the money and nothing else. Mauer stays and he is legendary forever there. Leaves for MFY and hated.

He basically had a career year defensively in 2008. He's been pretty much average the rest of the time.

He won't get another rehab start in Pawtucket because of their season ending. He's probably doing whatever further work he does in side sessions or something.
