Felger has admitted that he was wrong about the tightends.

But the thing is, the fact that Felger's opinions are a topic of discussion on ANOTHER RADIO SHOW shows you how much reaction they generate. I believe that's the way he approaches radio/TV, and it's worked for him thus far. However, I also agree that today is a day where they can't go negative. Then they'll become just as "schticky" as anything that EEI has ever done (and in my opinion, they've already gone well beyond that point with the Red Sox).

Or actually, maybe GRESH is just incompetent and can't come up with topics on his own, hence why he brings up Felger.

That's one of Felger's best qualities. In a world where nobody admits they're wrong, he does it in a heartbeat, which is great.

Felger has flaws, but I still think he does a really good job and he's entertaining. It's Mazz that keeps me away most of the time.

And Phenom is correct, the fact that I'm watching a sporting event and say to myself, "I wonder what Felger is gonna say about this", is a tribute to him, no matter how much he pisses me off every once in a while.

Absolutely, and he is the only Radio person in Boston who has ever made me think that way.

Not necessarily, because a lot of people seem to have criticized them for taking the approach they had. It seems to be a general response to that belief, though, which certainly would include this thread.

And Sparky, that's a sign of good things! You multi-tasker you.

I agree that one of Felger's best qualities is that he admits when he's wrong, but this is totally countered by the times when he's right and just beats the "I WAS RIGHT!!!111!!1!!" drum to death. That's definitely a fair criticism of Felger and another reason why he needs someone stronger than Mazz as his co-pilot to tell him to cut the crap and move on.

No you're a bit off. Because those were actually shorter deals which we all know are the only deals the Red Sox are willing to do (oops). The angle has to change now. Now it will be: "This is an ownership move, as was Ortiz, as was Gonzalez to an extent. Theo is not running the show over there because they are terrified of their ratings in the toilet and bad attendance."

Felger: "Yeah, the Red Sox spent a lot of money on Crawford, but how much of this is Tom Werner concerned about his stupid TV show? Crawford hasn't even hit 20 home runs in a season!"

Mazz: "You're absolutely right, Mike. Crawford has the lowest career slugging percentage of any player who's been payed like this...besides Ichiro, but Ichiro is overrated."

Felger: "How are you going to attack left-handed pitchers in this division with left-handed hitters? Crawford's getting paid 20 million per season, and Victor Martinez is getting paid 12. They should've just signed Martinez!"

Mazz: "And they let Jason Bay go last year, and Crawford's making more than double him. Bay fits better with this lineup. They also blew the Teixeira deal, and then had to give up prospects for Adrian Gonzalez. Look, I'm happy they're spending money, it's just the way they spend it confuses me!"

That was fun...but you know what, no other radio show would "inspire" me to do that. I actually spend time wondering what these guys will say after a major event. I'll be listening at 2, with my hand on the dial gearing to turn to 850 is I hear about Teixeira, Victor Martinez, Jason Bay, or declining popularity.

Our boys hate and mock the stolen base -- but they will have to strike "cheap" from their word bank.

Also, they will have to throw in the towel on their certainty that Henry is fixing to sell the club (As Felger did on his "feeling" that things would not "end well" with Tom Brady).

It is fair, is it not, to tee the discussion up with what one of these guys put in writing?

This from yesterday's Globe: http://www.boston.co...ptions_for.html
Mazz begins with the pivotal question --

Quote

For the purposes of the luxury tax, the Red Sox payroll currently stands at roughly $148 million. In 2011, the tax threshold stands at $178 million. And so as they now seek to fill out their roster, the Red Sox have roughly $20-$30 million to spend depending on just how much they want to stretch their limits.

And so here is the question:

Do the Red Sox have another big move left in them?

Or is Theo Epstein just playing it coy by suggesting "anything is possible"?

Bet on the latter.

ok ... so he lost that bet.

As to Crawford --

Quote

Among the possible solutions that still seem to be in play:

Signing Carl Crawford and incorporating a cheaper, righthanded-hitting designated hitter, thereby making David Ortiz a platoon player. Given the potential cost for Crawford – eight years and, say, $18-$20 million per – this seems highly unlikely. The Sox certainly have the money to go this route, but doing so would leave them with four left-handed hitters – Gonzalez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Crawford and Ortiz - against lefthanded pitching.

Unless, of course, Ortiz is reduced to part-time vs. lefties, against whom Ortiz posted a .599 OPS last season. Such a move would likely require the Sox to go with a less flashy option as their righthanded designated hitter, like Russell Martin or Darnell McDonald, both of whom historically have excelled against lefthanded pitching.

Regardless, Mike Cameron will likely replace J.D. Drew against lefthanded pitching.

"Highly unlikely" -- the count is 0 and 2

My question is whether he steals a page from Rhoden's playbook, on air if not on line.

I was listening to T&R today and someone called up complaining about the Crawford signing by saying that the Sox should have just kept Bay because Ellsbury is going to be Crawford and that he's going to want big money when he's ready to go to free agency. In 2014.

I am positive that this guy is a plant that is setting the day's agenda.

I'm having a hard time following this board today.

Folks in the big boy forum are freaking out over the signing of the Crawford, almost universally calling it an overpay when considering Crawford's skillset.

Then, folks in here are already ripping into Mazz because he's going to call it an overpay for Crawford's skillset.

I mean, it is a windy day in Boston today, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised. :)

Mazz likey: http://www.boston.co..._carry_big.html

States that brass were bullied into this by a disgruntled fan base (suppress the laughter) -- but likes it nonetheless.

Leaves plenty of room for the "overpay" card -- and for snickering at defense and stolen bases.

I love he even manages to work Tex in:

Quote

They bid on Mariano Rivera. According to the respected Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Sox even made an offer to left-handed pitcher Cliff Lee, all with the intention of jerking around a Yankees organization that overtook them by stealing Mark Teixeira two years ago

Not so fast...

Mazz has to keep the Teixeira thing alive. He has nothing to say about the Sox without it. There is no narrative for him to tie in every little development going forward if he just stops talking about the Tex signing.

It's like Felger with Moss and the Pats "regaining their soul". The difference between the two is that Felger just happens to be mostly right. Obnoxiously so, but still right.
