Felger and Mazz

But luckily, that didn't last long and it has been an enjoyable show. Mazz has been a little on the hyperbolic side of things, but Felger has called him out on it. I believe Mazz said something like "there is anarachy here," and Felger immediately shot him down.

I have been agreeing with almost everything else he has harped on today, though.
I agree, but the show has been great today, for the most part

He's read a couple of mine too. I've seen him around The South End with the Wood and have spoken with him briefly. He's a very nice guy.

Haha, I was listening and thought that was an excellent message. Good to know it came from here!
And Sparky, it doesn't surprise me at all that Felger is a nice guy. I think the d-bag thing is really overplayed. In fact, when listening to him, I think he often sounds like one of the more genuine guys in the Boston sports media. But then again, I am rather neurotic myself so maybe I "get" Felger more. For example, I thought him complaining a few minutes ago that Tony spit in his face was hilarious.

Tim Donaghy on the show tomorrow. Felger said they have questions for Donaghy that no one else does.
Should be a great listen, as Felger actually questions guests "to their faces" and isn't afraid of coming off as petulant. Unlike Ordway, who would rather "play nice" to keep a relationship, and then blast you once you hang up.

To be a dick? I believe he also said "I'm not listening to a 12 year old"
I guess it's one of those "had to be there" moments. Mazz basically lost it, and was doubled over in laughter.

Honestly though, you can't really blame him. Maybe he could have been less abrupt (I didn't hear it), but I don't blame for hanging up on the 12 year-old. I'd say virtually every other sports talk radio host would do the same thing. (Although I will say that I was listening to DA once, and he had a kid call him and kept the kid on for about a minute or so. Which I thought was very nice).
Anyway, I was kind of disappointed in the Donaghy interview. Not that the questions weren't good, but Donaghy seemed to have been trained to give very cliche answers and didn't leave much room for conversation.

I know that WEEI has a rule that all callers have to be at least 18, TSH probably uses the same caller guidelines.

Felger should have said "13 is the minimum" rather than the limit, as limit implies maximum (see: speed limit). Or, I could really be over thinking things this morning.
And it was too early for me to realize that as well this morning.
Although, there are such things as lower limits

I was listening. He did say 13 was a minimum. He could have been a little nicer, I suppose, but I don't really have a problem with him hanging up on him.
And actually, I think 13 is too young. I'd say 17 or 18?

I don't have a problem with it, but being a douche bag is part of his schtick and that's all he was doing.

Felger did us all a favor.
I agree, I'm responding to Sparky saying he should have said the age limit were 17 or 18, the only reason Felger said 13 was because he wanted to be a dick.

Agreed. I think that Felger maybe should have said that 16-18 was his limit, but yeah, being a douchebag is his shtick so it fit into that. I think the thing was totally tongue-in-cheek (but again, I wasn't listening at the time).
Anyway, as for today's show, very entertaining to hear Mazz (and now Gasper) really going after Felger for his Moss bias.
And this is what I enjoy about a show where there are 2 permanent hosts. Every human has their biases, and in this format, it allows us to know the host's better and in my opinion makes for a more entertaining program.

I don't disagree with this at all. And I thought about editing my post to say as much as you did BrewKing, I just had to go do something and now I forget what it was.
Sorry.

Ordway always said he wouldn't change his show until he got competition, I wonder if putting the pom poms down is a result of Felger and Mazz and trying to remain relevant.

I think they will talk about the game a bunch but he will definitely harp on Moss alot of the time.

I was thinking this exact same thing today, and though Moss certainly deserves criticism, I wasn't in the mood for 4 hours of harping on it either.
But you know, after being exposed to another way to do afternoon drive for a couple of months, I just couldn't bring myself to keep the dial to 850. I don't like the style of radio on "The Big Show."
I like how an idiotic caller on Felger and Mazz gets cut off in 30 seconds, and they move on like nothing happened. Whereas on "The Big Show," the caller is berated with questions by Pete and Glenn and the rest of the segment is themed around the moronic "previous caller." Sorry, but I want the hosts to drive the show, not the "previous caller."
And again, with Felger and Mazz able to switch between football and baseball, there was some Lackey conversation as well.
So I guess my point is, I just don't like the style of radio of "The Big Show." Really, it would take a lot to get me to switch back now. But I could very well be in the minority.

Deeply disappointed like Curly that the Sox have not mailed in next season, these guys are only reinforced in their negativity. Nothing can be allowed to threaten Mazz' narrative that the Sox blew themselves up for a half a decade by failing to sign Tex.
These two had a chance to stake out a sensible course based on facts and maintaining some objectivity; they are blowing it.

Jason Bay
Ryan Howard
Mark Teixeira
Albert Pujols
Aaron Hill
Ryan Braun
Prince Fielder
Ryan Zimmerman
Evan Longoria
They neglect to mention things like Bay is the oldest player on that list and is significantly older than most of it. They also seem to be keeping up this idea that the Sox could have signed him for $15 million a year. I believe Bay rejected that offer, no? They keep harping on a Cameron/Hermida platoon making 10 million and for 5 million more you could have had Bay.

Well, I think there are points to be made about Jason Bay and questioning why the Red Sox had significant "red flags" about him.
But yeah, like Felger with Moss, whenever Tony gets an opportunity to talk about the Red Sox's lineup, he goes to Teixeira. And that's what today has been, Moss and Teixeira.
I still think this show is a viable alternative and can continue to be that. But it seems like Felger and Mazz are so worried about being viewed as "fence sitters" like Ordway, that they try to force a strong opinion instead of acknowledging obvious grey area. They need to understand it's okay to talk about grey area with some of these things.

Why is that so disappointing? He's not a baseball guy, by his own admission. It's football and hockey. This show is so much better than The Big Show. It's not even close.
Oh, and no Ordway today so that show was even worse, I imagine, since I didn't listen.

I agree 1000%. Maybe its cause I'm not a HUGE baseball fan, but I enjoyed todays show. In fact I'm 100% hooked on the show........its the best sports radio in Boston, maybe ever.
Cedric Maxwell and Lou Merloni............nuf said.

Why is it disappointing? Do you think Michael Holley knew that? I highly doubt it. Do you think Dale Arnold knew that? Again, probably not. There's no doubt that Ordway didn't know that. Really, I don't think many outside of the baseball beat writers knew that.
The point is, Felger's baseball knowledge isn't the best in the market, but it's pretty in-line with what the standard is. And in fact, I'd say in some cases it's better, as he understands and references OBP, slugging percentage, and even occasionally OPS, which is something that not many do (it's not ideal, but it's fact).
So yeah, I am sick of people bashing his baseball knowledge. You can disagree with his opinions and he certainly isn't an expert, but in all honesty, few are. And compared to his peers, he's pretty in-line and in some cases better.

You're wrong on this one Dalton. Trust me. I don't disagree with you often but this is a good show. I don't like his hate'in on BC all the time but you don't like me hate'in all on Holy Cross. What's the alternative? The Big Show? NPR? Wait. Don't answer that.

Well, one of them did figure it out. Long ago. Mazz. He's a baseball guy. He corrected Felger. I was listening and heard it. You know what? I bet Felger - and quite a few lads here on this board, maybe even you - could easily school me about a lot of the rules and language and schemes in the football game. I just don't know it as I do baseball. Or hockey. I'll bet a guy like Death has forgot more football than I could possibly learn. Go ask your baseball fan friends how many of them didn't know you can't trade draft picks. You guys got to stop this shit. Felger and Mazz are not a conduit for SoSH. It's a radio show. I like it.

Well, it was a passing comment. I think that if you put a quiz in front of Felger which asked if you could trade picks, he maybe would say "no."
But honestly, I've heard a lot stupider shit said on sports talk radio in this market. Even by guys who are generally acknowledged (including by myself) as knowledge baseball guys. I remember a poster in the "Dale and Holley" thread saying Dale said that Jacoby Ellsbury is a better center fielder than Carlos Beltran.
Just as a general point, I really don't think Felger's baseball knowledge is that bad. It's not as good as a "baseball guy's," but is on-par with many others in this market, and in some cases is better than most.

It's a smart ratings ploy, but Jesus Christ does it get old. If, for example, the Pats won the SB this year, I swear to God they would spend four hours talking about how Bill Walsh or Don Shula or whoever would take BB's lunch money, or Randy Moss taking plays off after a 7/120, 2 TD performance.
Whatever - it's just talk radio. Being negative is easy.

I suspect he would not have. He at first thought Mazz was saying you can't trade sandwich picks, then when clarified you can't trade any picks, he asked really? more than once before settling down. He did not know, I think most sports radio hosts do. But Felger has made clear before he's not a rules guy, "the cap is crap", the Pats need a receiver why not trade for Michael Crabtree who's sitting at home(because it's against the rules sir). I give him credit for admitting he's not into the miniutae of the rules in sports, most hosts would have covered the gaffe by pretending they thought Mazz was talking about something else.
My favorite moment today was, uh Tony can you help me pronounce this word....(then tries anyway)...pleh-tell-eht
Tony "that's platelet you idiot"
Hilarious, he knew he'd butcher it then went ahead anyways.
Even though there are things that make me nuts on this show, there would be things that are bothersome on any show.
I'm happy to not have to turn on the screaming competition on EEI from 2-6.
