While Soxprosects and MiLb.com have him listed at 5-11 240 lbs this article has him at 6-3. That is quite a difference so I wonder which number is more true.

Sounds like he is a raw power prospect. From the weei full count blog Sox amateur scouting director Jason McLeod describes as “goofy power”.

So, the mystery widens. . . .

The latter report claims that Jacobs runs a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash. He should excel in breaking up the double play!

I think that they may be as confused as the rest of us and simply averaging 5'11" and 6'3".

Jacobs only got to play in 8 games and got 26 PAs in the GCL, which ended its season on August 31st, so his numbers are a SSS.

His line was .250/.333/.333

Of his 6 hits 2 were doubles

He drew 2 walks to his 8 strikeouts

He scored 1 run and had 0 rbi


Does anyone know what his next move will be. My guess will be some fall ball in Arizona or somewhere.

Unlikely. Latest word is that the Arizona replacement for the now-defunct HWBL won't start up until next year. Next stop is likely Fall Instrux, unless he gets a cameo in Lowell for their playoff run.

After the first 9 games of 2010, Brandon is off to a .432/.469/.901 start.

No flashes of that big time power potential yet though.

I have a hard time thinking that a .901 SLG isn't at least a small flash of power....but I get your point.

The numbers quoted are obp/slg/ops. Thus, he has a .432 on base percentage, and a .469 slugging percentage, leading to a .901 OPS. Still, not too shabby.

Absolutely right. I just assumed the normal slash stats and didn't take the extra second to check on it. That .901 will rise after tonight, as well.

As an aside... I'm not sure why anyone would utilize OBP/SLG/OPS (which one can derive from the first two)... instead of BA/OBP/SLG. I realize that Batting Average alone can be misleading, but the 3 stats together bring a lot to the table.

Jacobs is a year younger than the SAL average batters age.

Not bad for his first shot at pro season ball. A few things stick out, BABIP, Power and Discipline.

BABIP is meteoric, currently .090 higher than the second best in the SAL. There is obviously a bunch of luck going on for Jacobs right now, however he is helping his cause by mashing the ball every time he makes contact. He is 6th in the league in Isolated Power, behind players were born 4, 2, 2, 2, and 0 years ahead of him.

His walk rate is about #22 in the league so far, so he has been doing well in that regard. His K rate is high, but not shockingly so, in my opinion.

Of course this is just a good start, but he is a major prospect follow over the course of the year. April has a way of masking good or bad seasons, so the next few months will be interesting for Jacobs.

Didn't make the mid-season top 50 at BA.com but was mentioned in the comments by J.J. Cooper.

Jacobs would have made the Wait And See list. Like him as a prospect, he’s coming along nicely, but yeah I wouldn’t comp him to Gose, one is a plus-plus runner, the other runs well for his size.

I had high hopes for Brandon this year, but it's been a disappointing year - fewer walks, more strikeouts, less power.

Starting the year in Salem again.  To be expected given last year's numbers, but still disappointing.  He's one of my favorites and I'd love to see him start to put the tools together.
