The Red Sox today traded for righthanded hitting White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson, a major league source confirmed. What is still unclear is what the Red Sox will send to Chicago in exchange for Anderson, who is hitting .238 with two homers on the season and was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on July 20.

It is also unclear is whether Anderson will be added to the 25-man Red Sox roster or whether he will be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The Red Sox had been in the market for a righthanded-hitting outfielder.

This has to be related to something bigger on the horizon. Pawtucket OF depth?

Whither Baldelli?

Anderson's only value, I have to imagine, is as a defensive replacement and PR off the bench, seeing as how his career high in OPS+ is a sterling 81 last season.

That said, 13/27 on stolen bases doesn't really bode well for a career as a pinch runner. Maybe Pawtucket just needs another OF.

This seems like a really weird deal based on Anderson's comments from the day of Buerhle's no-hitter where he told them essentially "play me or trade me". Unless Rocco is being jettisoned, which makes no sense since Anderson can not hit, Anderson shouldn't be getting any playing time here either.
In response, Veeck threatened to request an official ruling on whether Yankees shortstop and reigning MVP Phil Rizzuto was a short ballplayer or a tall midget.

Have to assume this is another case of "Something is better than nothing" (a la Lugo)... Anderson has to have AAA options left for this to make any sense, right? ESPN had Anderson reported as disgruntled and requesting a trade.

Brian, Rhode Island is lovely during the summer... enjoy! Maybe we'll see you in September?

Well they granted his wish and traded him. He should get plenty of playing time in Pawtucket.

I doubt he'll even be added to the 40-man, so I'm betting the answer here is also "no". He'll end up in Pawtucket, but on outright assignment -- not an option.

There's a 40-man vacancy, but it's likely being reserved for a slightly higher-profile acquisition.

From The Worldwide Leader:
QUOTE
The Chicago White Sox traded outfielder Brian Anderson to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Mark Kotsay and cash considerations. Anderson, 27, hit .238 in 65 games for the Sox this season. He was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on July 20. He's a career .225 hitter.

Kotsay, 33, is a .281 hitter over 13 major-league seasons. He was hitting .257 with one homer and five RBIs in 27 games for Boston before being designated for assignment on July 24.

The left-handed-hitting Kotsay also has played for the Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, Oakland A's and Atlanta Braves.

Any deal to get that higher-profile acquisition will surely involve 2 or 3 people leavign our 40-man roster. There will be room.

Seems to me there's almost no chance he isn't added to the 40 man, actually....that'd require them to DFA him. Possible, but seems like a waste.

Probably less to serve the Red Sox and more to help Kotsay find another gig. He was a good soldier with fading/faded skills that was redundant once LaRoche arrived. And they help the White Sox part with the disgruntled Anderson. (No clue how the money moves: Kotsay is due 1.5 million, Anderson makes 400K or so).

Anderson was a bigger prospect and was kept over another chip (Joe Borchard) at the time Rowand got signed away. Decent fielder skills and some power but his CT% sucks and he won't walk usually. Pre-2009 Russell Branyan in sporadic playing time.

Conspiracy Theorist Note: All but 26 of his career games are in CF.

White Sox GM Williams loves grabbing OF's past their primes (Erstad, Podsednik, Griffey, Everett) the way Theo likes taking 1-year flyers on rehabbing pitchers. CWS has also had a CF problem since Rowand left the way SS has been a revolving door for Boston (Podsednik 2.0 somehow staving off Zombie status has been an improvement).

Yeah, I brain-farted thinking he'd already cleared waivers prior to the trade, but that hasn't happened. So onto the 40 he goes...

Wasn't this guy a fairly decent prospect at one point? Looks to me like depth in Pawtucket, which was desperately needed. He'll probably be up once rosters expand.

IIRC, he was the reason the ChiSox felt comfortable sending Rowand to the Phills in the Thome deal. Certainly a cautionary tale on properly valuing your prospects.

He had a pretty high OPS his first few years in the minors, and then the ChiSox rushed him up the ladder to the bigs as the Rowand replacement. He didn't hit in the bigs and hasn't really in subsequent trips to AAA.

Anderson was indeed the apple of the ChiSox eye for a few years. He was 15th-overall selection of the 2003 draft.
