Toucher and Rich --- Everyone Else Has Some Work To Do

I think I heard them say that Peter Gammons will be a guest tomorrow at 8:30.
I wonder how they'll handle that interview, because as we know, Gammons isn't shy about calling somebody out when he feels the interviewer asked a stupid question, or portrays little baseball knowledge (Mike Felger will tell you that).
It's fine to mess up with Amalie Benjamin, but I'll be curious to see how that interview sounds tomorrow morning.
I guess Gammons also has a charity thing to plug, though, because I think ESPN personalities are only allowed to appear on non-ESPN programming when they have something to plug.

Great radio hearing Fred threaten to strangle Wallach and Crash damn near pissing himself because it would give him job security. I was laughing my ass off. You could almost hear the disdain in Fred's voice when talking about Wallach ( I get the feeling that he really hates having Wallach there) and could cut the tension with a knife over the radio when Wallach said:
"So let me get this straight. The NY state laws are wrong, Burress' smart lawyers are wrong for taking the deal, but you're right."
Followed by about 5 or 10 seconds of stunned silence and then Crash "Strangle him Fred, strangle him."

I agree, it was really funny radio, but I don't think Fred really hates Wallach like you say. He just has somewhat of a short fuse, loves to be blunt and awkward, and Wallach is an easy target. Wallach plays along well too, knows his role as the dorky outsider of the group, and doesn't take any offense (at least on air). I never thought I would say this, but I actually enjoy having him on there. It speaks volumes about Toucher and Rich that they can give John Wallach a personality and make him funny. I would have thought that was impossible.

Yeah, I took that as a dig at Crash, meaning even if Wallach is no more, someone else will come in to be a threat to Crash, so that he'll never be comfortable.
As Frat said, he's just playing a character, which is really just an amped up version of himself. They're fairly genuine guys, but often overexaggerate their character traits. Fred's the miserable grump who hates the world, Crash is the old creepy drunk, and Rich is the goody two shoes who married his high school sweetheart. Those descriptions are all true of them in real life I bet, they just amp it up for the show.
The other reason I didn't think it was that bad was because if you've heard some of Fred's true rants, you'd realize he was just messing around there. When he goes off on something or someone, it's awesomely funny. It makes Felger talking about Favre seem calm and rational.

One thing I have enjoyed is the "Tanguay cross-over."
Very funny the way Toucher and Rich poke fun at him, and his persona. Tanguay does come off as an uptight guy who takes himself very seriously, and it's enjoyable to hear him put in those awkward conversations, even if it is only for a few minutes.

That must have been Fred leading the way in the Favre-bashing yesterday, then. They all joined in (Wallach even compared him to Barry Bonds for involving his kid), but it was vicious and hilarious and I loved every second. They've got me in the mornings; when they go to commercial, I'll switch to my iPod, but I can't imagine ever listening to D&C again.

The funny thing is that they played this for Tanguay live during one of the crossovers last week, I think it was Wednesday or Thursday and at least publically he liked it.
I think it helped that they also made fun of Wallach, Adolpho and Crash, albeit for a split second.

As soon as T&R devote two and a half hours a day to ultra right-wing conservative fanaticism I'll make the switch. That is how you will know they are truly in touch with their fan base.

Dating on Demand is definitely one of their stronger bits, the unintentional comedy from those things is off the charts.
I agree on the cross show stuff, I think it's funny and good cross promotion. They have been absolutely obliterating Tanguay, too. He used to come on their show quite a bit when they were at WBCN, and they busted his balls then too, so I think it's all in good fun. But I'll be damned if it isn't hysterical when they call him an empty mic who just ballwashes Papelbon.
Wallach calling Tanguay a "big drinker" because he could drink 10 beers yesterday was great only because you could audibly hear Crash look bewildered at Wallach's naivete regarding how much Crash drinks.

That was fantastic, everything from the complete awkwardness with Jarvis Green blowing him off to telling Fred Taylor that "in the air tonight" is about watching someone drown was just so uncomfortable. It also appears as though it will be a regular gig for him, so there's epic potential here.

I did catch that, that was fantastic.
I know several fans of theirs who actually don't like the new sports-centric setup at all. Most aren't sports fans so much, but are glad they're still on the air in general.

The questions and her answers:
Q: What is a bunt
A: I dont know, but I know what it is in football (?!?)
Q: What is a grand slam
A: a home run (they have her 1/2 point)
Q: What is a full count
A: 5 (yes, she must have heard her friend say 3 and 2 and she added them)
Q: Name a catcher on the Red Sox
A: Ortiz (her friend said good answer)
Q: What is the wild card
A: The player least likely to score
Then T&R starting ripping on Tanguay some more to kill some time before an interview with Chris Gasper from the Globe.

I'm guessing she got bunt confused with punt. That segment was pretty funny.

That's what I thought too. She was a solid choice to make pink hats look bad. Either T or R went as far as to say you can almost guess how well a pink hat will do on the quiz by the player they choose.
Ellsbury: no chance
Pedroia and Ortiz: almost as bad, "They sell those jerseys in airports"
Papelbon: party person
All position players: at least some shot
A starting pitcher: probably knows at least a little baseball

I really like the interviews they do with guys like Forsberg and Portnoy with Barstool Sports right now. Whereas D&C can't be bothered to talk to these guys unless they are named Brady or some other big name.

His Tiger Woods stuff today was awesome, considering the way he handled the fan backlash.

I only heard the beginning of the fan backlash when they were calling him a racist, but the initial meltdown when Wallach didn't mention the rest of the field was what finally won me over. He really needs to be a part of the show in the future because he is really the the glue that holds this show together.

1. Who was the #3 QB on the depth chart in front of Brady in 2000.
2. How many Super Bowls did the Pats win in the 20th century.
3. Who QB'ed the team to 2 wins in 1992.
4. Who was the 1st rd pick in 1987 that the Pats tried to convert to DB, refused, was traded, and eventually won MVP.
5. Who was the #1 overall pick in 1984.
6. Who was the offensive coordinator in 2003.
7. Who was their 1st round pick in 2001.
8. Where did Troy Brown go to college.
I can't remember the other 2. The caller only got one (being exposed in the process, it was embarrassing) and Wallach got 6 I think. The intro theme song set to a Rush song was the best part though.
And yeah, it was called Wallop Wallach. I'm enjoying his involvement quite a bit, he provides a good contrast to the rest of the show.

If you didn't hear it, apparently there is a Tyson documentary coming out which is primarily a really long interview. And if you already thought Tyson was effed up, I think you'll still be surprised at how much of a human sound bite the guy is. Some of the quotes from the film are so scary they're unintentionally comic. But T&R did a great job of cutting it into a game show/quiz format to set them up.

The Tyson documentary has been out for awhile now and it's actually fairly compelling. Ended up receiving a fair amount of praise from the critics.

They feel like they're starting to hit their stride and have been bouncing a lot of new ideas off the higher-ups there that will make for some good radio (if approved). Adolfo also said he loves working with John Wallach and had a lot of high praise for him.
I do like the show as a refuge from D&C and I'm hoping that the football season will give them an extra boost in the ratings.

No contest.
Edit: The more I think about it, I don't have a favorite in this time slot competition and alot of it is going to come down to what the discussion is. When D&C are going off on political rants, I don't care what T&R are talking about I will be listening to them. If D&C are talking sports and my other option is the "male bag", D&C will win.
Should be interesting to see what happens from here on out.
